Safe streets plan ready BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A new strategy designed to keep Ashburton’s streets safer after dark is off the drawing board and ready to launch. The community safety strategy has been developed by a number of key agencies pulled together as a group by mayor Angus McKay after several violent weekend incidents on Ash-

burton streets. From the outset he said solutions would only be found by a number of groups working together. And now those solutions have been found and packaged in a cluster of initiatives that would go a long way towards improving community safety, Mr McKay said. The package includes improved liquor ban signage, large

taxis for groups of weekend drinkers, more Town Watch safety officers on the streets and improved CCTV coverage of the central business area. Ashburton Taxis is upping late night transport options by putting two 10-seater vans on the road at the weekend and this is seen as one of the key fixes in moving people off the streets as quickly as possible, he said.

With roots stretching back to 1875, Heartland has a proud history of supporting small-to-medium sized businesses, farms and families in Canterbury. It’s great to offer the people of Ashburton a local banking option that is 100% for New Zealand.

Another key in the package was increasing the number of safety officers in the central town during the summer, through the Town Watch volunteers. “A key role for the safety officers will be to organise groups of people who live in the same area, into taxis so they can get home faster,” he said. The sticking point with the

safety officers, however, comes in the need to recruit additional Town Watch members. Several members left the group recently and it has been struggling to mount the number of shifts required to run patrols every Friday and Saturday night.
