Bring on the power

Rottweilers attack bike rider BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

An Ashburton bike rider is hoping that every dog owner starts to get the message that they need to keep their animals secure on their properties after being attacked by two dogs on his regular biking route. Eighty-six-year-old Doug Forsyth was making his way home through the streets of Hampstead on his electric bike after visiting the Ashburton Domain with his dog Chinchi.

“One jumped at me, I kicked it in the throat and I put the power up on the bike to get away from them,” he said. After a short chase down several other streets and another attempted jump, the dogs finally stopped at the end of Eton Street, allowing Forsyth to make his way home. “I have never had it happen to me before,” he said. “I am 86 and have been biking for 80 years and have never had it happen.” Forsyth says he understands the Ash-

burton District Council have impounded the two Rottweilers after another complaint from another person. “I don’t want to see the dogs damaged, it is the owners that are at fault, it is their responsibility to take care of the animals,” he said.
