Ashburton College is exploring a parent portal which gives parents live data about attendance, student notices and NCEA credits achieved. Acting principal Andrea Pearce said the portal linked to the school’s student management system and be part of a better communication system keeping parents up-to-date with their child’s learning. The college, which has a roll of around 1200, had an attendance rate of 80.7 per cent in July. Pearce said the attendance data was in line with national figures and the college had a number of initiatives in place targeting attendance. “These involve working with Deans, family form teachers and parents, who are sent texts if a student is absent. We are currently logging in students that
are ‘late to the gate’ and students will have consequences for being late.” She said college values of achieving quality, showing pride and having respect were being re-canvassed at senior leader assemblies. The number of overall stand-down and suspension rates at Ashburton College has also declined since 2011, in line with a national reduction. The 2015 student engagement and participation information shows that since 2008 the number of suspensions in state and state-integrated schools had fallen by 40.1 per cent to 2618. Pearce said there had been a gradual decline in the stand-down and suspension rates since 2011 though there was a small increase last year. “The overall decline we would attribute to our restorative approach to discipline which we have had in place for a number of years.”
Pearce said NCEA levels were improving steadily, which was also good news. Level 2 NCEA data was in line with national data and Level 1 NCEA achievement was above the national rate. For the first time, student engagement and participation data also included information on school leavers. For Ashburton College, it showed around 50 per cent of all leavers were getting jobs, while 25 per cent were enrolled in university study and 25 per cent in polytech or other study. Pearce said Ashburton was a community that valued education and parents were more relaxed about coming to the school to discuss their child’s learning. “We are also fully involved in the Hakatere Community of Learning with local schools to work on improving all of our students’ achievement in reading, writing and maths. This is really positive for our community.”
