Hospital work resumes BY CAITLIN PORTER

Work on the refurbishment and rebuild of Ashburton Hospital has started four months after the project was originally scheduled for completion. The first steps in the rebuild were taken yesterday with the start of the refurbishment of Ward Block C. The $8.7 million rebuild of the outpatients area and operating theatre, as well as earthquake strengthening of other
parts of the hospital and the refurbishment of ward blocks and an extension to the Acute Admitting Area of the hospital was announced in June 2013. The project was originally scheduled for completion at the end of last year. It was confirmed shortly before Easter that Bradford Building Ltd of Ashburton was the successful tenderer for the refurbishment and redevelopment of the hospital. Bradford Building’s manag-
ing director Mark Wilson said scaffolding around Ward Block C was now being erected and once that was completed the block would be re-roofed and repainted. Mr Wilson said during the time that the work is being done there will be minimal disruption to the patients and staff at the hospital. “It’s just business as usual.” Once the outside refurbishment is completed Bradford’s will move indoors and complete
some minor internal work on the block, including a fire upgrade. There will also be some minor structural strengthening completed on Ward Block D. A tentative start of June 1 has been set for the construction of the new Integrated AAU and Theatre Building. This has already undergone significant delays because of the need to deal with and safely remove asbestos in the old building. All work is due to be completed by June next year, nearly
two years later than the original completion date. As the work progressed, Mr Wilson said it was important the public was kept up to speed with what was happening on the project. “With the local investment the general public of Ashburton need to know what’s happening,” he said.
