Retail is taking the biggest hit as business confidence drops and Ashburton stores are among those feeling the pinch. Minimum wage and fuel price hikes and the low New Zealand dollar are among concerns, as well as the continuing effect of shoppers flocking to online platforms.
Health 2000 owner operator Bob McDonald described the sector as “flat”. “I don’t think it’s in a tail spin, but it’s certainly not jumping out of its skin,” McDonald said. Early spring was a traditionally quiet time of year anyway, and on top of that retailers would be concerned about minimum wage hikes, as it was an industry that did not have huge margins on goods
sold. Fuel hikes and the low New Zealand dollar also did not help, and at the Health 2000 group many raw ingredients for products were bought from America.
