IN TODAY’S GUARDIAN

Come on down Auckland ... BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@ATHEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The Ashburton District’s economy could soon be boosted by a wave of new residents, North Island business people looking for a slower pace of life. A marketing campaign has been launched by the Lake Hood Trust aimed at attracting business owners who can harness technology to work remotely, to relocate to the lake. Auckland is the target market, based on research that shows there are growing numbers of people wanting to retain their business interests from an out-of-city base, said trust chairman Graham Kennedy. “We believe there are huge numbers of people looking to move out of Auckland and there is no reason why they shouldn’t come to Lake Hood,” he said. An influx of new business people into the district would add a new dynamic and would also help fill the district’s skill gap, Kennedy said.

“We’re doing quite a focused approach into the Auckland market and while it’s aimed at attracting people to Lake Hood the whole district will benefit.” There was plenty of evidence that people were fed up with wasting considerable time every day tied up in traffic and were looking for new lifestyle options, he said. “Technology has now opened up new options for people to move away but to continue to run their business.” With new sections of the Lake Hood extension being developed people were able to buy house lots on the water or larger sections or lifestyle blocks at prices that were significantly lower than those in and around Auckland, Kennedy said. In addition to a push into the Auckland market, the trust was working with two parties interested in developing both town houses and holiday accommodation in the lake’s commercial area near the Lake House.

Lake Hood’s development is capped at 500 properties and the speed with which the lake extension is developed is driven by the district’s need for aggregate. Ashburton Contracting is a partner in the development with is chief executive Gary Casey saying new canals were currently being excavated and that would result in the release of more sections over the next 12 to 18 months. A consent was granted for the excavation for a 30 year period allowing five million cubic metres of aggregate to be removed. Stages seven and eight in the development are fully sold, stage 12 was selling well and in stage 10 only two waterfront lots were unsold, Casey said. “This development is about having land for everyone, land that everyone can afford. Most of our buyers are locals and with the lifestyle blocks we’re getting quite a few younger families with children,” he said.
