Sometimes it can take years to build a genuine friendship, other times it takes only a few weeks. Volunteers at Ashburton IHC generally experience the latter as they get to know service users under the branch’s volunteer programme. They say spending time with someone with an intellectual disability is a very special thing, there are no airs and graces, just living
in the moment and enjoying activities and connections. “You can form a friendship so quickly because it’s so real,” said volunteer Alasdair Freeborn. “It’s amazing how quickly you build real friendships, and you get quite close, you are there for each other.” The former dairy farmer had to take early retirement for health reasons, and about three years ago found volunteering was just what he needed.
“I was struggling back then, I had to give up my job,” Freeborn said. He was paired with service user Mark Rushton. “I was a people person and always had been, and that was something that got taken away from me with my illness. Mark was a really special guy, we really did form an instant connection. “It gave me a reason to get up and get out of bed in the morning and go and do something.”

ager Russell Small is another member of the volunteer programme. His friend, now of about eight years, is Stu. The pair hang out together on a regular basis, and even something as simple as visiting Small’s home and going to the dump can be a fun occasion.

Freeborn and Rushton enjoyed many activities together and in particular liked to visit Freeborn’s friend’s lifestyle block. Sadly, Rushton passed away about two years ago, and today Freeborn has a lasting connection to his late friend as he cares for his cat Henry. Freeborn has since been paired with William Glassey, and is once again getting to grow in all the benefits of a blooming friendship. Retired human resources man-
