Ashburton benefitted from nearly 6000 hours of community work last year. According to figures released to the Guardian by the Ministry of Justice under the Official Information Act, 5860 hours of community work sentences were given in the Ashburton District Court in 2014. Most community work sentences were given for traffic and vehicle regulatory offences, with 22 sentences handed out in the district court last year. Nine community work sentences were issued for acts intended to cause injury, while eight were handed out for theft and related offences. The number of hours of community

work sentenced in the Ashburton District Court has decreased significantly in the past three years. In 2012, 8155 hours of community work were sentenced in the district court - 28 per cent more than last year. However that does correspond with an overall reduction in crime and the number of people appearing in court in the district. Ashburton Community Corrections service manager Trevor Johnston said offenders performed a range of services as part of their community work sentences. Mr Johnston said community work could be completed in two ways - in a work party, or as part of an agency placement. According to the Department of Corrections, community work offend-
ers do unpaid work to pay something back for the offence they have committed. It also gives offenders an opportunity to take responsibility for their offending and learn new skills and work habits. Community work can include beautification projects such as removing graffiti, helping at food banks, and cleaning beaches and community parks. When deciding what type of community work an offender will complete, probation officers take into account the offender’s personal circumstances, their needs and skills, and the offence they committed. They can be required to complete between 40 and 400 hours of community work, depending on the level of their offending.
