Principals back college BY DAISY HUDSON
DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury principals have challenged their community to stand with schools against bullying. They have come out in support of Ashburton College and the way it dealt with a serious bullying incident at the school last Friday. They say all schools deal with bullying, and what happened at the college could have happened anywhere.
Their backing comes as the college’s principal has been working to tackle bullying outside of the school gates. In a statement issued yesterday, the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association said it hoped the bullying and subsequent fallout would not affect the wonderful things that happened at the college every day. “Part of a school’s responsibility is to work with the community in teaching young people the skills and attitudes
needed to make good decisions, so they can form and maintain good relationships with the people around them. “This will only ever be successful when the school and everyone in their community share the same values.” The principals said that even with the best anti-bullying education programmes, young people will, for one reason or another, make poor decisions from time to time. “In such cases schools work
with the aggressor and the victim and their families to restore dignity and minimise the chance of the incident happening again.” The statement followed an incident last week in which three boys were stood down after covering the head of another student and threatening him with violence. The incident, which was captured on video, gained national media attention after a member of the school community took
the story to One News. Since then social media has been alive with comments, many critical of the school for how it responded to alleged bullying. Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said he was “appreciative and humbled” by the support from the principals’ association.
