Williamson taking time out

Mourinho determined to restore glory days

New Zealand cricket captain Kane Williamson has sat out this week’s first-class match for Yorkshire due to “mental fatigue.” The county’s coach, Jason Gillespie, confirmed the decision to leave Williamson out was at the Kiwi’s request. Gillespie, the former Australian fast bowler, says there was nothing sinister behind the request as Williamson prepares for nine months of non-stop international cricket with the national team. Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon had said “mental fatigue” was behind Williamson’s absence from the four-day game in London. Gillespie says the need for a break was commonplace for many international players. “It does highlight that scheduling is an issue. “It’s been an incredibly busy period for everyone. Everybody gets affected with illnesses, injuries and the like,” Gillespie told espncricinfo. “In an ideal world we’d obviously want him to play. “But we felt it was in his best interests and everyone’s best interests that he had a couple of days away from the game to spend some time with his part-

Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson has his eye on a solid nine-month commitment to international cricket.

Yorkshire with a Twenty20 game on Friday. He will join the New Zealand team at their training camp in South Africa ahead of a two-Test tour of Zimbabwe which marks the start of a relentless international programme through to late March next year. Williamson’s form has been modest at Yorkshire. He has scored 42 runs from four first class innings and managed only one half-century in 11 innings across all formats. The world-class batsman has had limited cricket since New Zealand’s World Twenty20 semifinal loss to England on March 30. He had all of April off and played just six games for the Indian Premier League champion Sunrisers Hyderabad in May. Another break preceded his Yorkshire stint starting on June 15. Last year Williamson became the sixth batsman to score 10 Test centuries before the age of 25 and picked up 2692 international runs across all formats – the third highest of any player in a calendar year. He was named Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World in 2015. - AAP

ner and clear his mind a bit. “We’re fully supportive of that move. “He’s a great lad and there was some really good, honest communication.

“That’s the good thing about it: he’s confident enough coming to us as a support staff and saying ‘let’s open this conversation up’.” Williamson, 25, will farewell

Unifying the Manchester United faithful is high on the priority list of new manager Jose Mourinho, who is determined to recapture the glory days at Old Trafford. Former United boss Louis van Gaal failed to win over the fans during his tenure, despite an FA Cup triumph in May, as inconsistent performances led to the 20-times English title winners missing out on Champions League qualification. “I understand that they expect a lot from me but I also expect a lot from them,” Mourinho told the club’s website. “There is no chance we will be happy if we are not together and I think the passion (they have) for this club is really amazing. “Always when you change a manager, I feel it is a sad moment but it is a new chapter now.” Van Gaal’s possession-based style of football failed to yield results for United, who finished fifth in the table and scored 49 league goals – their lowest total since 1989-90. The 53-year-old Portuguese has already begun restructuring his squad, having signed defender Eric Bailly, midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic so far in the close season. Mourinho said during his unveiling earlier this month that he intended to sign another bigname player, with Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba heavily linked by British media with a return to the club. Smeltz to play in Malaysia All Whites striker Shane Smeltz is leaving the A-League. Smeltz will join Malaysian Super League side Kedah, after nine seasons in the Australian competition, including the past two with Sydney FC. The Malaysian season is underway, with Kedah sitting fifth in the 12 team competition. The German-born striker has played mainly in the A-League, although he has had stints in England and Turkey. Smeltz has also won multiple awards throughout his career including the 2007 and 2008 Oceania Footballer of the Year, two A-League Golden Boots, and he has also been included in the PFA Team of the Decade (2005-2015). - AAP
