Ashburton’s Grey Power has thrown its support behind the medical use of cannabis. The local organisation has followed the lead of Northland’s Grey Power in supporting the use of the drug for relief of pain and to help manage a number of medical conditions. Peter Thomas, president of Grey Power Ashburton, said the vote came about in a recent meeting. After its vote in May to unanimously support the medical use of cannabis, the Otamatea chapter began petitioning the
rest of the 32 Grey Power chapters in New Zealand. The petition launched by the Otamatea chapter has gained 78 signatures within the past month. “We’ve got ex-nurses in our committee and with their experience they say there is no danger in using it,” Mr Thomas said. However, he said it was only the medical aspect of cannabis they supported and smoking was not something the group endorsed. Mr Thomas said one of the reasons the group voted yes was for the drug’s use in pain relief. “People who are suffering from terminal illness find it difficult to find a good long-term pain relief.”
Cannabis is not legal in any form in New Zealand but there are growing calls for it to become a legalised substance. In March this year Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne said he would support the legalisation of the drug if it was proven to be effective in treating illness. A recent example of cannabis being used medically is the case of Nelson teenager Alex Renton who died after spending three months sedated in Wellington Hospital last year. Mr Renton was given a range of drugs to stop mysterious seizures, including Elixinol a cannabinoid oil given to him by his mother.
