Attacker turns on victim’s rescuers A 62-year-old Ashburton man who came to the rescue of a woman being beaten by her partner said he had been right to intervene, despite receiving a broken finger and a cut to his eye when the attacker turned on him. The man was one of three victims assaulted by Sialavai Matau, 27, of Ashburton. Matau, a meat worker, admitted charges of assaulting with intent to injure, common assault, assault on a female and possession of an offensive weapon arising from the nasty incident in June last year and appeared for sentence in the Ashburton District Court
this week. Judge Allan Roberts contemplated a 12-month prison sentence before stepping back from incarceration and imposing 175 hours of community work and 12 months supervision, with counselling for domestic violence. He also ordered Matau pay the 62-year-old man $500 in emotional harm, and $250 to another man who also came to the woman’s aid. The two men were neighbours and went to Matau’s McDonald Street home after hearing the woman screaming. A fight broke out in the hallway between Matau and the two men and the older man broke a finger when he
punched the defendant, who was angry they were in his house. The two men went outside and Matau drew a large butcher’s knife from the kitchen and followed them. He gestured at them with the knife before placing it down the back of his trousers. Matau then rushed towards one of the men and punched him in the head with a closed fist. He fell to the ground and Matau kicked him.

I’ve been retired for 21 years, and have lived at Lochlea for 2 years. After my wife passed I found our house and garden got too big! What really appealed to me about Lochlea Lifestyle Resort was that I could retain my independence and freedom while finding a new support network. The people here really are great. Plus, not having to take care of general property maintenance anymore is a bonus! Bob Jones
