POLICE SWOOP Around a dozen police vehicles, the dog squad and the armed offenders swarmed on a house in Alford Forest Road yesterday. Following an aggravated burglary on Wednesday night, police executed a search warrant at a property between James Street and Farm Road in the afternoon. The heavy police presence at-
tracted a lot of attention, with many locals contacting the Guardian to try and discover information on what was unfolding. A section of Alford Forest Road, which is one of Ashburton’s busiest roads, was partially closed to traffic by officers at around 1.50pm, and just before 2pm, the armed offenders squad descend-
ed on the house from a waiting area around the corner on Farm Road. A group of neighbours and onlookers gathered nearby to watch. A man who works nearby to where the operation took place told the Guardian that the whole process was quick with the police swooping in a methodical fashion.
“One minute there was nothing much happening and then the next minute there were all these police and the armed offenders around the place,” the man, who asked not to be named said. “It was pretty incredible to watch unfold.” Before the area was cleared at around 2.10pm, an officer was
seen assisting a woman, child and baby carrier from the house. When contacted yesterday, police were unable to provide any additional details on the operation, its outcome, or on the armed burglary the night prior. An officer at the scene said he was not authorised to comment when approached.
