Smoke-free breach costly An Ashburton hospitality business has been fined $1000 for breaching smoke-free laws. The operators of Braided Rivers Restaurant and Bar pleaded guilty to a charge brought by the Ministry of Health in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. The government department said they had written repeatedly to the licensee from March last year until February this year re-

The operators were charged with failing to take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no person smoked in the walledin area with a bricked archway to the right of the premises as faced from Burnett Street. It is considered an internal area.

They were now waiting for the building’s landlord to engage

their preferred builder to remove the area altogether. Judge Joanna Maze said the charge carried a maximum fine of $4000 and there was little guidance from the few other charges that had been prosecuted.
