An initiative to foster stronger ties between Ashburton locals and newcomers has kicked into gear. Yesterday marked the official launch of the Welcoming Communities programme, an Immigration New Zealand initiative that Ashburton, together with the Selwyn District Council, is just one of five communities in the country to
pilot. A number of local community members, groups, agencies, cultural groups, government agencies, and sector representatives have contributed to the development of a Welcoming Plan to help close the gap between migrants and community members. The plan addresses leadership, civic engagement and participation, the connectedness and inclusiveness of communities, economic and business and
employment opportunities, equitable access, public spaces culture and identity. The plan is the result of months of hard work across the district, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said.
