Staff put at risk; firm fined $70k An Ashburton company that makes feed pellets for cows has been fined $70,000 for failing to protect its workers from toxic dust generated during the manufacturing process. Workers at Precision Animal Supplements were exposed for years to hazardous substances that hurt their eyes, impaired lung function and put them at risk of developing serious illnesses. The company had pleaded guilty in the Ashburton District Court to a charge laid by WorkSafe that it failed to ensure the health and safety of workers. In sentencing yesterday, Judge Allan Roberts set down the fine and also

ordered emotional harm payments totalling $5000 to three workers – this was on top of $8000 the company has already made to them. Judge Roberts also ordered the company to pay $4740 towards WorkSafe’s legal expenses in bringing the prosecution. A director of Precision Animal Supplements was in court yesterday to hear the verdict as well as the workers, whose victim impact statements detailed how they hoicked up black dust and coughed incessantly. They were worried about their future health. The workers had repeatedly raised

concerns about toxic dust generated during the pellet making process, which involved wheat, peas, barley and canola being fed into a hammer mill. WorkSafe began an investigation after a complaint and visit to the factory in 2016. It found Precision Animal Supplements had failed to identify the exposure of its workers to hazardous substances as a risk and therefore not developed a safe system of work.
