Ashburton could become the home of a big ticket arts festival that would rival similar events staged around the South Island. The idea of an annual arts festival is being promoted by Ashburton District councillor Rod Beavan and has already gained tacit support from both the
Ashburton Trust Event Centre and the Ashburton Art Gallery. It’s a simple concept, he said, one that would showcase the best of Mid Canterbury’s talent across a wide range of performing, applied and fine arts as well as featuring invited out of town performers. “We have so much talent here and so many good facilities now. Other places
do it and there’s absolutely no reason why we couldn’t,” he said. Initially he suggested the festival could be a weekend-long event, starting with one or a range of bands performing, possibly in the EA Networks Centre.
