Mt Hutt had its busiest opening weekend ever, with more than 6000 visitors. “It was the best first three days of the season on record,” said manager James McKenzie. On Saturday and Sunday the top carpark filled quickly, while

the next carpark down, Rakaia Saddle, took the overload. “And on Sunday that was just about full, we were almost ready to go down to the next carpark (Zed Creek),” McKenzie said. He put the high numbers down to reasonably good weather and last week’s snowstorm bringing snow and creating its own pub-

licity. TVNZ’s Breakfast crossed live to the mountain on Friday morning, showing the nation how good the skifield was on opening day. “So you can’t beat that sort of coverage, you can’t pay for it,” McKenzie said. And Mother Nature had not only brought the snow, but also

provided perfect snowmaking conditions in the days leading into opening. “We pretty much emptied the (snowmaking) reservoir,” McKenzie said. The 30 million litres of water pumped out in these few days helped build up the 50 centimetre base to one metre, and for the

second year in a row, the mountain opened with all its lifts operational including the triple chair.
