Firm failed to protect its staff An Ashburton company that makes feed pellets for cows has admitted failing to protect its workers from toxic dust generated during the manufacturing process. Precision Animal Supplements has pleaded guilty in the Ashburton District Court to a charge laid by WorkSafe that it failed to ensure the health and safety of workers and exposed them to a risk of serious illness. The company will be sentenced on September 10 and Judge Joanna Maze has also referred the case for restorative justice, where all parties involved have a chance to meet.
WorkSafe named the period of offending as between April 4, 2016 and March 31 last year. The maximum penalty is a $1.5 million fine. A summary of facts on the court file says Precision Animal Supplements’ failures exposed its workers to a risk of serious illness that included lung cancer, impaired lung function, asthma, fibrosis, hyperthyroidism, silicosis and/ or central nervous system effects.
