Mid Canterbury schools are dealing with students with an increasingly diverse range of mental health issues. And while that is placing considerable strain on school resources, Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said the options available to deal with affected students had improved significantly. Concerns over the lack of mental health support for youth in Canterbury saw several schools working with the Canterbury District Health Board’s Child, Adolescent and Family Service over the last year to achieve a better support system. “It would be fair to say that 18 months ago I was really concerned about the lack of support, resources and services available in Mid Canterbury,” Mr McMillan
said. The few resources that were available, were community agencies. These were relied on heavily and were under considerable pressure. By working with CAF a number of gaps had been identified and filled, he said. “Their responsiveness and the level of communication has certainly approved. “I’m much more comfortable now than I was 18 months ago. I think our young people are much better supported.” A huge amount of work has been done to get the district to the level it is now in terms of youth mental health services, he said. “Certainly the level of co-operation and collaboration in the district is a real strength.” Schools are able to use organisations including Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service and Safer Ashbur-
ton who offer “amazing programmes for youth”, Mr McMillan said. Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said they have been able to take advantage of a number of agencies as well as working with a youth mentor who is based in the school. Teachers or the guidance counsellor will often work with the students, parents and agencies to help individuals. Schools deal with mental health in a different way than 50 years ago when all issues were dumped into one box, he said. Four schools in the district, Ashburton College, Mount Hutt College, Hampstead School and Ashburton Borough School, also use the CDHB’s School Based Mental Health Team which aims to support schools in addressing youth mental health issue.
