Ashburton still thriving BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A state of the community report, released this week, shows that despite economic challenges, the Ashburton District is thriving. Home ownership and median personal annual income are higher than the national average and both population growth and GDP growth are significantly outpacing the New Zealand av-
erage. The district, however lags behind in median annual household income at $63,100 compared to $63,800 for the rest of New Zealand and the percentage of the population with formal qualifications, Mid Canterbury was 65.5 per cent compared to 71.5 per cent nationally. The report measures outcomes against goals that were set by the community in 2005. It uses data from a number of
sources, including the Census, household labour force surveys and Ashburton District Council residents’ surveys. It compares performance and achievement in three-yearly brackets. While that was the good news, Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay conceded that not every aspect of life in the district ticked all the boxes for residents with the survey spelling out very clearly that satisfaction with
the district’s roads had hit an all-time low at just 57 per cent significantly well below the national average of 78 per cent. While some of the roading issues were caused by a very wet autumn last year, that was no excuse, Mr McKay said, and the council built $1 million of unsubsidised work into its budget this year. An additional $650,000 will be injected next year. “We’re giving roading top pri-
ority and I believe we’re doing more than our best in asking ratepayers to come and help us with the extra money,” he said. The council has also been rated poorly for consultation on just 48 per cent satisfaction, but this is consistent with other councils around New Zealand.
