Operation targets synthetic drugs BY DAISY HUDSON

Police have launched an operation targeting those who are “trading on other people’s misery” by selling synthetic drugs in the Ashburton District. The move is focusing on synthetic cannabis and other illicit drugs, and is running as part of a wider MidSouth Canterbury operation that has already seen people arrested further south. Area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said synthetic drugs have once again become an issue in the district, despite an initial drop-off following their ban in 2013. “After they changed the law, they disappeared to some degree off the

radar,” he said. “There have been some people who have seen this as a money-making venture where they are trading on other people’s misery, and we are going to take steps to stop them.” Twenty bags of synthetic cannabis were reportedly seized from suspected dealers by police in Waimate on Monday, leading to several arrests. The Psychoactive Substances Act was passed in 2013, effectively banning the sale of all but 41 so-called legal highs. Nobody had been arrested in relation to the operation in Ashburton as of yesterday, Mr Gaskin said. Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield told the Guardian recently that synthetic drugs were still available on the black

market in Mid Canterbury. A small group of people in Mid Canterbury were regular users of synthetic drugs, he said. “We’re aware who they are, and from time to time they commit an offence and we arrest them.” However a crackdown on local suppliers meant that synthetic drugs, like other narcotics being used in Mid Canterbury, had to be couriered in from outside the district, he said. Police have been getting tough on drug offending in the district, with a major raid last year resulting in multiple arrests. Illicit drug offences have also been trending downwards, dropping in Mid/South Canterbury by 8.1 per cent last year. Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
