A woman was cut out of a car and taken to hospital with moderate injuries following a crash at the corner of Cass Street and Victoria Street yesterday morning. Two vehicles collided at the intersection shortly before 10am, blocking the road.
Emergency services including police, St John ambulance staff and Fire and Emergency volunteers arrived shortly after. One of the vehicles was promptly towed, while St John medics examined the driver in the other. Due to the nature of her injuries, emergency services had to cut the doors and roof off the vehicle be-
fore removing her. A St John spokesperson said the woman was taken to Ashburton Hospital in an ambulance shortly after 10.30am. Emergency services directed traffic around the intersection until the road was cleared at 11am. A woman working nearby, who arrived on the scene shortly
after the incident, described seeing the two cars in the street with smoke billowing from their airbags after the collision. She, and another local woman the Guardian spoke to at the scene, both felt it was a problematic intersection and recalled seeing other incidents there in the past. In April, a vehicle was left
badly damaged by a crash at the intersection. In February, another car rolled over onto its doors after colliding with another at the intersection, but the driver escaped with only minor injuries.
