A mega water storage facility in Mid Canterbury has been given the green light, though Fish and Game have already flagged concerns about water loss from the Rangitata River. Independent commissioners have granted 21 consents related to the storage pond, which will
make use of an existing take from the river by Rangitata Diversion Race Management Limited (RDRML) and a new one for an additional 10 cumecs. It also allows the RDR to replace an underperforming bioacoustic fish fence with a more efficient system of rotary drums. The storage facility will also include a white water course for
kayakers and other recreational users and an ecological habitat. RDRML chief executive Ben Curry said the project was to future-proof water for irrigators, as well as creating the ability to use water for other purposes, like supplementing flows in the Ashburton River and managed aquifer recharge.
