More security cameras and increased, multi-agency collaboration with the police are being considered to help crack-down on crime in Ashburton’s central business district. An approach will be made to police, Safer Ashburton and other key agen-
cies about developing a combined community safety strategy, the district council announced yesterday. The move follows a review of how Ashburton’s CCTV cameras are used and of community safety, by independent consultants InToto Projects. Concerns were raised about latenight violence and vandalism in the
CBD following a series of high profile incidents in recent months. One brawl saw a police officer requiring stitches after he was assaulted.
