Nicky supports changing the flag and voted for the blue and black design featuring the silver fern and southern cross, with the red and blue flag of the same design as her second choice. “I would not want to be a top athlete and stand up overseas and get the Australian flag put up on me.”

HOW DID YOU VOTE? The majority of Mid Cantabrians have voted in the first New Zealand flag referendum which closes tomorrow, Guardian polls suggest. Voting papers needed to be in the post by Tuesday in order to be counted. Reporter Susan Sandys and photographer Tetsuro Mitomo hit the streets of Ashburton yesterday and found nine out of 16 Ashburton residents interviewed had voted in the referendum, while 24 of 27 people who responded to a Guardian online poll said they had voted. Some of those interviewed did not vote because they did not agree with the referendum process. One elderly lady, who did not wish to be named, said she threw her referendum papers in the rubbish bin in disgust.

AMY FINN

Amy voted in the referendum, with the blue and black flag featuring the silver fern and southern cross as her first choice. However, in the second referendum early next year, she will be voting to keep our current flag. “Our soldiers fought for us under than flag, it represents them,” she said.

JOHN DRISCOLL

Sandy voted for the blue and black flag featuring the silver fern and southern cross, but still preferred New Zealand’s current flag. Although he would like to see a silver fern added. “It can be confused with the Aussie one until it unfurls out, that’s why a silver fern would be good.”

Peter’s first choice was the blue and red flag featuring the silver fern and southern cross, while red peak was his second choice. He voted as he wanted to see the flag change. “I can kind of see the reason for it. It’s never going to be the right time, it gives us an opportunity to move forward.”

Brett was away overseas during the referendum, so did not get to vote, but wanted to retain the current flag. “Some of the fern ones are alright, but I quite like it how it is really,” he said.

John’s first choice was the blue and black flag featuring the Silver Fern and Southern Cross, while red peak was his last choice ... While he liked the current flag, he believed the silver fern was iconic and should be part of the flag, so would prefer a new flag featuring the symbol.
