A man returning to a transport yard after a day’s work was killed after the truck he was driving plunged into a riverbed near Ashburton yesterday afternoon. The man, aged in his 60s, was seriously injured after the truck he was driving left a single-lane bridge on Maronan Road at about 4.40pm and crashed into the riverbed below, according to Inspector Dave Gaskin. Emergency service crews,

including an urban search and rescue crew from Timaru, worked for nearly an hour to extract him from the truck before he was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesman for the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade told the Guardian that rescue workers had “some trouble” getting to the truck because of the terrain and the way the vehicle had landed. A serious crash investigation was under way at the scene last night, and the road remained

closed while police conducted a scene examination and removed the vehicle from the riverbed. The name of the deceased will be released once next of kin have been informed, Mr Gaskin said. The driver worked for Ryal Bush Transport Ashburton Ltd, which is located on Maronan Road. Scott O’Donnell, managing director of H. W. Richardson, which is a part-owner of the transport company, said the man was driving a 4WD fertilising

spreading truck and trailer. Both were empty at the time of the crash, he said. “We believe our driver was returning to the yard after a day’s work,” he said. “What we don’t know is how he hit the bridge, there doesn’t seem to have been other vehicles involved, so we don’t know why that is.” The man had worked for the company for “five or six years”, he said. “It’s a sad end for a guy in his 60s, he was a good operator, we

just don’t know why he’s not here with us anymore really,” he said. “Our focus is with the family, giving them comfort at this critical time.” Fire crews from Ashburton, Hinds and Timaru attended the scene, as did the Westpac rescue helicopter. The incident marked the second fatal crash in the Ashburton District this year. Terry Henry Munday, 63, died after the car he was driving failed to negotiate a moderate bend on Grahams Road in July. UK funerals to celebrate life Funerals in Britain are becoming a celebration of life rather than sombre occasions, with alternatives to hearses, cardboard coffins, and mourners asked to wear colourful clothing, new research has revealed. A study by the Co-operative Funeralcare found an increasing trend of favourite songs being played, photographs on coffins, and funerals being held in gardens, sports venues or beauty spots. Some coffins have been transported by bus, motorcycle, Cadillac, tandem bicycle or horse-drawn carriage, it was revealed. A survey of 2000 adults and research among the co-op’s 2500 funeral directors showed a rise in a “destination funeral”, with services held in settings other than churches or crematoriums. A life-long fan of TV’s Only Fools And Horses had his coffin transported in a Reliant Robin (a small three-wheeled car) in south Wales. - AAP

Beckham touted as possible 007 Who should be the next James Bond? Soccer legend David Beckham, whose biggest role to date is 13 lines in the upcoming movie Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur, is being touted as the next 007. It all started with an online campaign by his legion of fans. The London’s Daily Star picked up on the story and then the Daily Mirror took it one step further telling readers the 40-year-old “is seriously considering” taking over from Daniel Craig. Current 007 Craig has said, but is yet to confirm, that he wants out of the franchise. Beckham has not actually said he wants the role either, but it’s fair to assume any budding actor would want to be immortalised as the greatest movie spy of all time. The only problem is Beckham has next to no acting experience and there’s several accomplished and respected stars being tipped to be the next Bond well ahead of him. Not the least is Australian Hugh Jackman who said he was approached to play the role when the producers were looking to recast 007 after Pierce Brosnan’s time had expired. “At the time I was about to do X-Men 2 and I was like `I don’t think it’s the right time’,” he recently said.

Cecil killer breaks silence The US dentist who killed Zimbabwe’s Cecil the lion has broken weeks of silence, saying he had no idea it was a special feline and announcing he would return to work after lying low. In his first interview since sparking international outrage over the killing of the black-maned lion, Walter Palmer told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he would be back at his dentistry practice this week. The trophy hunter said that he and the others in his party had no clue that the lion they were hunting was the revered big cat that has been a well-known attraction at the Hwange National Park, according to the paper. The 55-year-old also maintained that the July hunt, during which he was armed with a bow and arrow, was legal. Zimbabwe has asked the United States to extradite Palmer to face charges over the hunt. His lawyer maintains he has done nothing wrong. The dentist also said the ordeal had been particularly difficult for his wife and daughter, who had been threatened on social media.

Community backs fire force By SuSan SandyS

The Hinds community is rallying behind its rural fire force as it lobbies the Ashburton District Council to allow removal of a blue gum tree. The location of the tree is preventing fire force members from moving ahead with plans to construct a new fire station as they disagree with a council request to move the building site by 10 metres to save the tree. Chief Dave Kingsbury has previously threatened to resign, stating “it’s me or the tree”, however he has had a change of

heart due to support he is receiving on the issue. “I’m considering changing my stance, but only because of the level of support I have got from the local community,” Mr Kingsbury, who has served in the brigade for more than 35 years, said. “I’m absolutely rapt with it,” he said of the outpouring of support he had received, much of which had come in since a social media post on Monday received over 100 shares. Mr Kingsbury’s daughter Cindy Wilkins put up the Facebook post decrying the coun-

cil’s lack of common sense, and said yesterday she had also been pleased with the response. “I’m glad that everyone has got behind it,” Mrs Wilkins said. “We just wanted to put it more in the public eye, because it’s been battled for so long. There’s nobody I have been in contact with that’s for leaving the tree.” Mrs Wilkins and Mr Kingsbury have both received offers of either poisoning the tree, chopping it down, or damaging it so it has to be removed, however they appealed to the public

not to take vigilante action. “We want the council to go in and see what the community wants is for the tree to be removed,” Mrs Wilkins said. Neighbours spoken to by the Guardian supported removal of the tree. Mayor Angus McKay said he had been told by a council staff member that the fire brigade was happy with moving the station. Mr McKay also restated council’s comments last week that reserve land was primarily for flora and fauna. The fire station site is on Hinds Domain

land, vested in the council and managed by the Hinds Reserve Board. Group manager service delivery Neil McCann said as owners of the domain the council did not believe there was a need to remove the tree. It had been agreed between the Hinds Reserve Board and council that the fire shed site would move instead. “If there’s good reason to remove a tree by all means we will consider it, but given the fire shed will be moved 10 metres there’s no need to move the tree,” he said.

Inner town brawls scare off Town Watch members By daiSy HudSon

The Ashburton Town Watch is urgently seeking volunteers after losing half of its members in one fell swoop. An ageing group of volunteers and heightened tensions following several public brawls in Ashburton’s CBD have been blamed for the shortage, which has left the group’s membership struggling to break into double digits. The Town Watch, which was first set up in 1985, sees volunteers patrol the streets each weekend in a bid to keep the community safe. However that security is in jeopardy, with fewer people willing to take on the responsibility. One shift has already been cut in the wake of the volunteer shortage, with patrols only operating every second Friday night as opposed to every week. Town Watch member Russell Stockdale said it had shared the system with the Rotary Club until the club decided its members were “getting too old”.

At the height of its membership, as many as 20 volunteers were regularly patrolling the streets. However that had dropped off to “eight or nine” members, Mr Stockdale said. “The members are getting older and aren’t keen to stay out all night, and the young ones are just not interested,” he said. Two people patrol each night, meaning half of the group’s members were being called upon each weekend, he said. A series of violent incidents in the town’s CBD, including a large brawl in which a police officer was injured, may have put people off joining, he believed. “I wonder if it’s what’s going on around the town, whether people are a bit afraid,” he said. However volunteers did not leave the safety of the car during patrols, and any incidents they witnessed were passed on to police. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said it would be “a great shame” if the Town Watch was not able to continue operating.

Work is about to start on one of the final stages in a $1.5 million project to stabilise Mill Creek’s banks and lessen the flooding risk onto neighbouring properties. Stages four and five of the Ashburton District Council’s Mill Creek project have almost wrapped up with just a small strip of creek through Alton Place subdivision on the edge of Argyle Park to be completed this year. Council projects and operations manager Viv Eyberg plans to have this section of work wrapped up before building in the subdivision is completed. “If we get in and do our work first then it means people

building houses in there can do their landscaping along the creek without us going in there and destroying it,” he said. The stretch of creek along Argyle Park is scheduled for bank stabilisation next year. And when that section is signed off, Mr Eyberg said that would effectively complete the western part of the project, from West Street to Farm Road. There is a 60 metre stretch, however, between Pages Road and Creek Road that has not been stabilised because a single brick treatment applied by property owners over many years made it a high risk project, Mr Eyberg said. “There’s a brick wall on the left and right and both sides are in bad condition. If we decided

to work on this and something went wrong then we’d take all liability.” An option was to pipe water through the affected section, but currently the council was opting to let the status quo stand, he said. The driver behind the project which has seen the creek bed and banks lined and stoned, was ensuring water in Mill Creek could flow unimpeded, reducing the ongoing issues with flooding that had plagued many of the properties along its course over many years, Mr Eyberg said. In the past, the creek had become clogged with weeds, material from collapsing banks and often from garden rubbish tossed into it. “Now it’s open and flowing

While it has been an attractive amenity for people living along its banks, for some it has created significant problems, with its banks eroding into properties and on occasions, with its waters flowing across lawns and gardens. Work over many years on solving the creek’s problems has been at best, sporadic and piecemeal, but last year the council decided to tag $1.5 million to clear the creek, line and cover its bed with rocks and to stablise the banks with rocks or timber retaining walls or by simply reshaping and replanting.

A dog has been shot after it tried to attack two police officers who were attempting to enter a house in Featherston. Police were called to the house in rural Featherston near Boundary Road about 9pm on Saturday after reports were received of a man threatening people with a knife. Senior Sergeant Mike Sutton said that as police tried to enter the house they encountered resistance from those inside, who set the dog on two officers. One officer used pepper spray to try to stop the charging dog, and when that failed, the other officer was forced to shoot it, Mr Sutton said. “It was very angry and had been wound up by occupants of the address and unfortunately that was the only response left available to us. “It’s really unfortunate that those people chose to use that dog in that way and caused that action to be taken.” - NZME

The discovery of two rare timpani in a Dunedin school storage space has sent the drums of communication beating, and attracted attention from percussion aficionados across the country. The timpani, also known as kettle drums, are believed to be more than 100 years old. Columba College head of music Richard Madden said he had no idea the “baroque timpani” were so rare. The timpani were sitting at the back of the school stage, but had seldom been used by the school in recent years because they were impractical. - NZME

Mass faintings Stage fright, heat and the flu could have been the “overwhelming” factors causing children to faint on an Invercargill theatre stage yesterday. St John South Island communications adviser Ian Henderson said after reports of several children fainting, four ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were called to the Civic Theatre in Esk Street about 1pm. The ambulances transported nine children, aged between 10 and 12, to Southland Hospital’s Emergency Department. At least six of the children were in a moderate condition. Several children were assessed at the scene. A Southland Hospital spokeswoman said all the children had been discharged by last night. - NZME

Maori occupation Kaitaia Airport operators have called on the parties involved in a Maori occupation of the airfield land to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. Activists moved onto land at Kaitaia Airport at about lunchtime yesterday, cancelling flights into and out of the Far North. Far North Holdings chief executive Andy Nock will be at the site today with a police iwi liaison officer to attempt to negotiate an end to the occupation. “This relates to a Treaty settlement negotiation, rather than anything to do with Far North Holdings or the district council,” he said. “That said, we are keen to keep a level of communication going.” Mr Nock said discussions with the protesters were “amicable”. - NZME

Ashburton is already planning how it can play its part in helping Syrian refugees settle in New Zealand says mayor Angus McKay. With New Zealand committed to increase the number of refugees it will accept by 600, Mr McKay said he is already working with council staff to identify the services already available and the additional services that would be needed to

help some of those newcomers become part of the Ashburton District. “We have jobs here now that are available, there’s a shortage of employees and this is an opportunity to attract people who are willing to work, to Ashburton and to welcome them here,” he said. Whether people came to the district from internal migration, as immigrants from overseas or as refugees, the district had to make sure it had the re-

sources available to ensure they were able to settle well and become part of their new community, Mr McKay said. “We’ve already started working to see how we can fit in to the Government’s programme to get the appropriate number of refugees into the Ashburton District.” Mr McKay said he had talked to a number of community agencies including the Newcomers’ Network and to private employment consultants. He

has contacted MP Jo Goodhew to ensure she was aware the Ashburton District was keen to work with the government programme. While Ashburton is prepared to roll out the welcome mat to Syrian refugees, Timaru’s Red Cross spokesperson has made it clear that Timaru will not, citing a lack of housing, counselling services, translators or religious infrastructure. The Red Cross is responsible for resettling refugees in New

Zealand. On arrival they complete a six-week orientation programme at the Mangere Refugee Centre before being resettled in locations determined by Immigration New Zealand. Refugees can later choose where they want to live. The Government’s decision to increase New Zealand’s refugee numbers by 600 over a three year period has been criticised in several quarters for being too few in number and spread over too long a period of time.

Hong Kong ‘bank’ letter scam doing the rounds By CaitliN Porter

A scam letter from Hong Kong is doing the rounds in Mid Canterbury. Linda Diamond, a local taxi driver, said one of her regular clients received the letter unaware it was a scam. It was addressed to her client from someone purporting to be the director of credit and marketing for Wing Lung Bank. The letter stated she was the beneficiary to $41,300,359 left by a deceased oil magnate. It invites her to contact the bank, stating the transaction is “100 per cent legal and risk free”. “I am contacting you because you share the same last name with my client,” the letter goes on to say. “I know you might not be related but after countless efforts to locate direct relative to my client … I decided to contact you to join me to put claims on this deposit before it is forfeited to the authorities.” Ms Diamond is warning other residents not to be fooled. “I had a look and I said, ‘this is

a scam’ so she was unaware of what it was all about,” she said. After realising it was a scam Ms Diamond contacted the Guardian and took a copy of the letter to the Ashburton Police Station. “My main concern was the

elderly people, some of them have lost that ability to pick up on those things,” Ms Diamond said. “A lot of older people, if they get a letter and it says to ring a number then they will, they won’t pick up on it.”

Ashburton police sergeant Janine Bowden said police had been made aware of the scam. “The scam sort of letters have been around for years,” Ms Bowden said. “At the end of the day they are just yet another scam asking for money.”

Sergeant Janine Bowden said Ashburton Police were aware of another scam doing the rounds. Mid Cantabrians have received phone calls, supposedly from Spark, as a means to gain access to personal computers. The scammers ask people to input their information and their computers then lock up, Ms Bowden said. The only way to unlock them is generally through a computer expert. This can be dangerous as the scammers can potentially access private information, she said. Following that, the scammers will often tell people if they want their computers unlocked they would need to send money, when people access internet banking the scammers then have details. Ms Bowden advised people not to engage in conversations that involve personal details. “If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.”

A church which has served its community for 118 years had its final service on Sunday. The Tinwald Methodist Church building on State Highway One may be retained and used as an outreach building, or it could be sold. Parishioners who were still attending services have the option of instead going to the Baring Square Methodist Church, which is to repair its earthquake-damaged landmark building. “It’s sad after all those years, it was a figurehead in the district,” said Tinwald parishioner Audrey Bruce. She had been attending services at the church for more than 20 years. They were initially held every Sunday, however that had dropped to two Sundays per month in recent times, with just five or six worshippers at each service. Four on drink-driving charges The following people appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. Driving matters: Arnika Louisa Luxton, 19, of Hampstead, was intoxicated when she collided with the side of a drive-through takeaway business on August 1. A witness alerted police who tracked her down and discovered she had been driving with an excess alcohol level of 796 microgram of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 796mcg/l). Luxton had also been convicted of drink driving in May last year. She was disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to undertake nine months’ supervision to include counselling as directed by probation services. Luxton must also apply for a zero alcohol licence when her disqualification ends. Anthony John Clarke, 54, of Hampstead, was convicted of drink driving (EBA 592mcg/l). He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $450 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Shane Walker, 46, of Rakaia, was convicted and remanded on charges of drink driving (EBA 493mcg/l) and driving while forbidden. He will be sentenced on October 19.

Coleman Fraser, 43, of Methven, transferred $6354 from his victim’s bank account into his own over a two-month period. He was convicted and remanded at large for sentencing on October 19 on the representative fraud charge. The court was told Fraser assisted his victim with internet banking, and later used her details to help himself. He has since made good $1630 of his debt.

Matthew Michael McCook, 30, of Hororata, was convicted and disqualified from driving for six months on a charge of driving while disqualified. Other matters: Mahaka Hemi Aranui, 26, of Tinwald was sentenced to 120 hours of community work and ordered to pay $196 in reparations on his fourth conviction for burglary. He will also be subject to intensive supervision and judicial monitoring for 12 months. Aranui and his associates broke into the Netherby Four Square and helped themselves to a quantity of alcohol, disturbing a baker working in the back of the premises. Police later found him with

The court was told Day was embroiled in an argument with his victim when he pointed to a 40cm metal pipe and threatened her, saying “you should get this”. He was convicted and sentenced to six months’ supervision. Teautuaine Dean, 24, of Netherby, failed to contact the restorative justice co-ordinator prior to his sentencing date yesterday on charges of domestic assault and fraud. The matter was adjourned until October 19. Daniel John Brokenshire, 28, of Mitcham, was convicted on a charge of wilful damage. He was remanded at large for a restorative justice conference to take place before he returns to court for sentencing on October 19. A 20-year-old Allenton man convicted of unlawful sexual connection with a girl aged 15 at the time, was sentenced to 110 hours of community work, 12 months’ intensive supervision and ordered not to associate with the victim.

Judge Maze also delivered a three-strikes warning. Maku Tuakoi, 21, admitted a charge of breaching a community work sentence. He was convicted and sentenced to an additional 40 hours community work – with a warning prison was the next option if he failed to comply. Heidi Michelle Birse, 41, of Ashburton, was sentenced to six months’ supervision on a conviction for shoplifting. Nicole Mary Favell, was sentenced to 90 hours of community work and nine months’ supervision, with special conditions attached, on charges of theft, driving while disqualified, giving police false details and possession of a methamphetamine pipe. Ryan James Scarth, 23, of Rakaia, was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment on charges of possessing methamphetamine utensils, a series of bail breaches, five theft matters – relating to fuel drive-offs, fraud and breaching a community work sentence. He will be released under both special and standard conditions.

The council has been embroiled in a wrangle with Mid Canterbury Netball and Mid Canterbury Rugby along with Sport Canterbury, Mid Canterbury over a deal the sports groups said had promised them enclosed office space in the multi-use administration area. When the area was ready for use, they discovered there was just an open plan office with no enclosed areas and all three groups made it clear that change of plans could jeopardise their tenancy. By AnnA LeAsk It was an ordinary day in Upper Hutt – until the gunshots. Armed with a high powered rifle, a man in his 20s made his way to McDonald’s on Main Street. He fired two shots in the drive-through and people began to call 111. It was 12.30pm. Less than an hour later the armed man was dead, shot by police. At 12.41pm, Chris Atkinson received a text message from his wife, who was inside McDonald’s. “Babe, there’s an armed guy sitting next to me in the restaurant,” it read. “She said that he stood up and told everyone that he had a weapon and they should leave,” Mr Atkinson said. John Philipson, 84, was “within a couple of arm lengths” from the gunman in the family restaurant. “All of a sudden I heard what I thought was a firecracker. I thought it was those bloody kids and then I looked up and saw a guy with a rifle. I was about to remonstrate with him and try and placate him but a bloke behind me says, ‘Come on

As it was running to him he tried to shoot it but he wasn’t a very good shot so he missed the dog and the police of course shot him and that was it. “I saw him go down and ultimately I saw the police and they did CPR on him and they were pushing his chest for quite some time until the paramedics arrived.” Multiple investigations into the shooting are under way for the police, coroner and Independent Police Conduct Authority. - NZME

Get down off high horse and find way forward Sue Newman

o the people of Hinds, it’s just a tree but to the Ashburton District Council, it’s a tree worth waging a war of words over. That tree, a humble blue gum that can never claim to have historic, emotional or cultural significance, has pitted the people of Hinds against city hall. At stake is the township’s new fire station. They’ve chosen the perfect site but using that site means the tree must be removed. The council’s response is blunt and to the point. Chose a new site and save the tree. The locals’ reasoning is sound – a new site means more ratepayer money to survey that site, but even worse, a new site puts a power pole slap, bang in front of the truck bay. Not our problem, the council says. It’s our tree and it’s staying. And it gets worse. The council has adopted a high-handed approach – it’s our tree on land that was gifted to Hinds, they’re saying. We’re paying for the building and it’s not the fire brigade’s place to demand a site. Clearly the council has forgotten its manners. “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you”, it says. That arrogant attitude won’t earn it any friends. Fighting the community over such a minor matter has cost it huge ground in its efforts towards being a better communicator with ratepayers, the people who pay staff wages. Let commonsense prevail, either chop the tree, save the dollars, win back the favour of the people of Hinds or work with those ratepayers to find a compromise. Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, the council has earned itself a heavy black mark for the way it’s handled the situation. What could have been a minor issue has become a full scale public fight over what appears to be a matter of principle for the council. Halftime score: Hinds 10 – council 0.

YOUR VIEW Explicit book It appears that the same suspects who insisted that my right to discipline my grandchildren by employing the traditional smack on the bottom be banned, now insist that I am wrong to agree with the banning of the children’s book Into the River which reportedly contains frequent use of the C and F words, and explicit sexual content. It seems to me that if any part of a book described as a children’s book could not be read over a community radio station without incurring the wrath of the Broadcasting Standards Authority, or could not be printed in this newspaper, then it is not suitable for its stated purpose! I assume that those who disagree with its banning because many children have easy access to the internet, would also al-

low children to be exposed to, in book form, all of the pornography which is readily available on the net. I believe the book in question has received some sort of award; that in itself is a good reason to avoid it, most award winning books are execrable. D. n Friday, August 28 I was fortunate to be present at the launch of the Canterbury Regional Economic Development Strategy by the Minister for Economic Development, Steven Joyce, with Dame Margaret Bazley and Minister of Earthquake Recovery, Gerry Brownlee. This is a result of collaboration of all the region’s mayors and the chair of Environment Canterbury through the Canterbury Mayoral Forum of which I’m a member. Post-earthquakes, our thriving rural economy kept the Canterbury economy buoyant. As civic leaders, Canterbury mayors have recognised the need to act now to make sure the region’s economy doesn’t slow down with the winding down of rebuild activity. Recent indications are, if we keep up the momentum, Christchurch and Canterbury can lead the country in economic prosperity. It’s a great milestone for 11 Canterbury elected leaders to have achieved such unity and agreement on a way forward to secure the region’s prosperity. Together we can reach our goal: “A region making the most of its natural advantages to build a strong, innovative economy with resilient, connected communities and a better quality of life for all”. We have talked with people from the farming, transport, tourism, immigration, tertiary education and telecommunications sectors, and have agreed on seven priority work programmes, each with a lead mayor and council. Mayors have clustered around these work programmes, supported by the Chief Executives Forum and the Canterbury Policy Forum.

Ashburton District Council, under my direction, is taking the lead on newcomer and migrant settlement work programme for the region. We’ve already hosted a workshop of some of the key people from other local authorities to share ideas and agree on a way to work together to make the Canterbury region a welcoming place that newcomers from the North Island and overseas will want to call their new home. As a region, we’ve put many initiatives into practice to help celebrate cultural diversity, but now is the time to move beyond events and festivals and move

towards making people from all areas just simply part of our wider community in our everyday activities. One of the most rewarding parts of my job as mayor is to host the citizenship ceremonies. It is here that I see people from many different parts of the world choosing to become New Zealanders. It is an honour that Ashburton is the place in New Zealand they choose to live. My hope is that we see more and more people making that choice and encouraging their friends and family from their countries of origin to follow

Compo for refugees? European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker will try to overcome hostility from eastern Europe to a plan of migrant distribution quotas by offering bounties worth thousands of euros. In an address to the European Parliament today, Juncker is expected to highlight compensation of 6000 euros to be given for each refugee a country accepts. Countries will be paid 500 in transport costs for every asylum seeker who arrives in their country who needs to be relocated to an EU neighbour within the scheme. Juncker is trying to build political support for a mandatory scheme to relocate some 160,000 refugees from Italy, Greece and Hungary to other countries within the eurozone. A similar plan for 40,000 people had to be downgraded from “mandatory” to “voluntary” this year after facing objections from member states. Hungary and Slovakia regard the Middle Eastern refugees as a threat to their countries’ Christian identity. Federica Mogherini, the EU’s chief diplomat, says the flow is “here to stay”, and says those coming to Europe are refugees who need legal protection. Eastern European countries claim the people are motivated by higher standards of living

Experts say an Android phone app that takes a photo of the user and holds their device ransom for $US500 ($NZ722) is high-tech blackmail. The app, called Adult Player, appears to offer users pornographic images but instead secretly takes pictures with the front facing camera, technology blog ZScaler says. The app then holds the phone hostage and pressures the victim to pay a $US500 ransom through PayPal. - AAP

50 jets on bomb raid Turkish warplanes have launched a massive air operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, killing as many as 40 rebels, the state-run Anatolia news agency says. More than 50 Turkish jets were involved in the six hours of raids, killing “35 to 40 terrorists according to preliminary findings”, Anatolia said. The overnight operation came after 16 Turkish soldiers were killed in the Kurdish-dominated southeast of the country in an attack blamed on the PKK. - AFP

Arcangelo Ricciardi entered the International Chess Festival of Imperia ranked 51,366 in the world, but astonished rivals as he breezed through the early stages of the competition to reach the eighth and penultimate round. Jean Coqueraut, who refereed the tournament in Liguria, northern Italy, said he began to suspect something was wrong early on in the competition. “In chess, performances like that are impossible,” he told La Stampa newspaper. “I didn’t think he was a genius, I knew he had to be a cheat. “I kept on looking at him. “He was always sitting down,

A Canberra school principal has been stood aside for commissioning construction of a steel “calm down” cage to house a troublesome autistic child. ACT education minister Joy Burch said the decision was wrong and the officer responsible would no longer be a school principal or work in a school. Flaws in Knox case Italy’s high court says the investigation into the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher, of which American Amanda Knox was convicted but acquitted on appeal, had “major flaws”. In March, the court acquitted Knox and her Italian ex-lover Raffaele Sollecito of Kercher’s murder, ending an eight-year legal saga that saw the two convicted, acquitted and convicted again before being finally cleared. In its 52-page explanation of the ruling released yesterday, the court underlined the absence of a “body of evidence” allowing for a conviction “beyond a reasonable doubt”, saying there was no “biological trace” linking the two to the grisly murder. - AFP

Defeat for Cameron British Prime Minister David Cameron has suffered an embarrassing defeat in parliament over how the referendum he has called on leaving the European Union will be conducted. The defeat in the House of Commons yesterday was on a technicality, but it highlights the struggle Cameron faces to keep eurosceptic rebels in his own Conservative Party in line before the vote, due by the end of 2017. The government had wanted to water down the usual rules on so-called “purdah”, under which ministers are banned from making any announcements which could affect the result of the vote for the last 28 days of a referendum or election campaign. But the normal rules will now be applied after the government’s plans were defeated by 312 to 285 votes. - AFP

Daimler has lost another round in a global battle to protect its brand against what it perceives to be a similar logo being used by a Chinese construction machinery firm. In a judgment released by the Court of Appeal yesterday, Justices Ellen France, Helen Winkelmann and Douglas White agreed with decisions made by the High Court and the Assistant Commissioner of Trade Marks. Daimler had opposed registration of the Sany trademark, arguing that it would deceive or cause confusion because of its similarity to the Daimler trademarks. Sany was incorporated in China in 1989 and manufactures and exports construction machinery including road rollers, excavators, diggers, hydraulic pumps, buses and cars. The company’s application in August 2006 to register its trademark in New Zealand was approved by the Assistant Commissioner of Trade Marks. Daimler, meanwhile, began as a motor vehicle manufacturer in 1882 and started using the three-pointed star logo on its vehicles internationally in 1909 and in New Zealand in 1911. T oday Daimler manufactures cars, trucks, buses and other industrial products under the Mercedes-Benz brand.

“It’s the nature of trademark litigation – the same issue tends to get relitigated over and over again in various jurisdictions.” Intellectual property lawyer David Marriott said it was common for trademark disputes to play out across the globe. “Each country has its own trademark laws until you get to Europe, where there are some harmonised laws,” Marriott said. “It’s common to see multiple decisions in relation to the same or similar trademarks around the world, and they don’t always agree with each other,” he said. “We’d normally expect them to agree and you’d normally bring them to the commissioners’ or the courts’ attention if there had been decisions in other jurisdictions, but they don’t always agree.” Which countries the companies took legal action in depended on what markets they deemed important to the brand, Marriott said. “In this particular case, Daimler obviously see this as a threat to the monopoly they’ve got in their trademark in that device – that three-pronged device. “I imagine they will have made the decision that every time something that looks similar comes along, they will try to stamp it out so that you don’t get a whole lot of things that incrementally get closer and closer.” - NZME

The Financial Markets Authority is investigating suspect trading in Xero shares that preceded a major capital raising by the software firm earlier this year. An NZX spokeswoman yesterday confirmed the sharemarket operator had referred the matter to the FMA on June 8. “Much of the trading activity during the relevant period was undertaken offshore, which impacted NZX Surveillance’s review process and the ultimate timing of the referral,” she said. “The FMA continues to consider the matter and is the most appropriate to contact for any further inquiries.” An FMA spokeswoman said the regulator could not comment until its inquiry into Xero was completed. Despite no price-sensitive information being released to the market, Xero shares spiked

in the lead-up to the February 25 announcement that the firm had raised $147 million from North American investors. On February 19 NZX issued a “please explain” notice to Xero, which noted that its share price had gained 15.9 per cent between February 17 and February 19. In response, the firm said it was in compliance with its continuous disclosure obligations. Contacted yesterday, Xero chief executive Rod Drury said the company had conducted an internal investigation in February and had found nothing untoward. “We haven’t heard any more from them [the FMA],” he said. “I haven’t even thought about it for the last six months.” - NZME

Roast makes way for kebabs, curry L

amb is probably the most quintessentially Kiwi of any meat but it has now become one of our most expensive proteins. Gone are the days when there was roast lamb on the family dinner menu at least one night of the week. The roast has priced itself out of many budgets but its fall from popularity has seen a rise in other cuts. If your dinner time fancy turns to lamb then you’re spoiled for choice, with everything from mince and stir fry to lamb steaks, chops and diced lamb on offer.

Lamb curry 1kg lean lamb shoulder chops 2 T butter 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 t fresh ginger, finely chopped 1 T each garam masala, turmeric, ground cumin, ground coriander, curry powder ¼ t cayenne pepper 1 C chicken stock 400g can chopped tomatoes 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 T lemon juice ½ C natural unsweetened yoghurt

Moroccan lamb kebabs 1kg boned leg of lamb 1 T olive oil 1 t smoked paprika 1 t ground cumin 1 t coriander 1 onion, finely diced ■ Cut meat into small cubes ■ Put remaining ingredients in a bowl and add lamb cubes. ■ Cover and marinate in the fridge for at least three hours, but overnight if possible. ■ Thread onto oiled skewers and cook over a hot grill. ■ Transfer to a serving platter sprinkle with flaky sea salt. ■ Serve with pita bread, avocado, lettuce and tomatoes.

Lamb pot pie

1 onion, thinly sliced 2 cups water 2 T fruit chutney 500g pumpkin peeled and cut into 2cm cubes 2 T chopped mint 7 sheets frozen filo pastry, thawed Spray cooking oil

■ Heat 40g of the butter and the olive oil in a large heavy-based saucepan. ■ Add sliced onion and cook for 5 minutes, until softened. ■ Add diced lamb, together with any excess flour mixture. ■ Cook, stirring, for 4-5 minutes, until lamb is browned. ■ Add the water and chutney. ■ Bring to the boil, then the heat to low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. ■ Stir in pumpkin. Cover and increase heat to high. ■ Bring to the boil and then reduce

heat to medium. ■ Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes, until pumpkin is tender and sauce has thickened slightly. ■ Remove from heat. Stir through mint and season. ■ Spoon lamb mixture into ovenproof dish. ■ Spray each filo sheet with cooking oil, scrunch each sheet and arrange over lamb. ■ Melt remaining butter and drizzle over filo. ■ Bake for 30-35 minutes in 180 degree oven until filo is crisp and

■ Preheat the oven to 150°C. ■ Heat a dash of oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. ■ Season the lamb with a little salt and pepper and brown on both sides. ■ Set the chops aside. ■ Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter and another dash of oil to the same pan. ■ Add the onion, garlic and ginger and cook, stirring, until the onion is soft. ■ Add the spices and cayenne pepper. ■ Cook for another few minutes, stirring all the time so the spices don’t stick and burn. ■ Add the stock to the pan, bring to the boil then immediately turn off the heat. ■ Stir in the tomatoes, chickpeas, lemon juice, yoghurt and the lamb and its juices. ■ Put in casserole dish, cover and cook in the oven for three hours. ■ Serve the curry with steamed rice, a dollop of unsweetened yoghurt fresh coriander and hot crispy naan bread.

Blood Brothers is the next big show on the Mid Canterbury arts agenda. The cast from the Big Little Theatre Company have been working hard for eight weeks, and it’s getting close to production time. Set in Liverpool in the 1950s, Blood Brothers tells the story of Mickey Johnstone and Edward Lyons, twin brothers secretly parted at birth. Mickey’s mother, Mrs Johnstone, gives one of the boys to her employer, Mrs Lyons, who can’t have children. Mrs Johnstone also knows she already can’t provide for her children at home. The two boys grow up in completely different social classes Mrs Lyons and Edward being an upper middle class family while Mrs Johnstone, Mickey, and his seven siblings live in the slums. The two brothers meet as boys and become “blood brothers”. No matter how hard their

Libby Higson, who plays Mrs Johnstone, and Caleb Livingstone, who plays The Narrator, are both longstanding members

Both actors said the hardest part of the rehearsal process was mastering the accent. “Getting a believable Liverpudlian accent for all my lines has been quite challenging,” Caleb said. For Libby, 16, playing a mother of eight and portraying losing a child was tough. “I’ve never experienced that before, so it’s kind of hard to

find that emotion inside me,” she said. However she enjoyed the challenge. “I get to work with so many different kids, and really enjoy the time on stage,” she said. “I get to portray feelings that I’ve never really had to experience.” Blood Brothers runs from September 17 to 19, at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

The Mid Canterbury tennis open day signalled the tennis season is near as players of all ages headed to the courts at the Ashburton Domain on Sunday. Mid Canterbury coach Chris Anderson said the sessions

were enjoyed by all, with the number of juniors taking part as strong as ever, but the senior numbers were down slightly. “It’s just to invite people in that are new to the district, or the players that put their rackets away for the winter to get the rackets out, and signal the

tennis season is coming,” she said. “The numbers for the juniors was very good, and always is very good. “The numbers were down a little bit for the more mature people, but the weather also played its part.”

Anderson said that the Hot Shots programme was very popular amongst the young players. “The juniors had the Hot Shots programme, which is a big programme for us for the little ones, it’s all about having fun.”

Cup a tempting target The handicapper has handed the Volkstok’n’barrell camp a sweetener as they continue to mull over their Melbourne spring carnival alternatives. “The way he’s weighted for the Caulfield Cup has to make it a good option,” said Chris Gibbs, who prepares the four-year-old with Donna Logan. “He’s got 53.5kg and that’s an attractive weight, he would get a kilo and a half off Mongolian Khan.” Volkstok’n’barrell finished a close seventh when resuming in the Gr.1 Memsie Stakes a fortnight ago when ridden by Blake Shinn and he will be reunited with Craig Williams in Saturday’s Gr.1 Makybe Diva Stakes. His performance at Flemington is then likely to determine whether he heads toward the cup or the Cox Plate. “We will talk to Craig after the race, we value his opinion, and take it from

there,” Gibbs said. “There’s no rush to make a decision just yet and we’ll get Saturday out of the way first.” Williams won the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas on Volkstok’n’barrell in the autumn and he rode the Tavistock gelding in a gallop at Caulfield yesterday morning. “He worked with John Sadler’s horse Mutual Regard and he pulled up really well,” Gibbs said. “Craig said while Volkstok’n’barrell wasn’t quite there yet, he would be competitive on Saturday. “He’s definitely heading in the right direction.” Should the connections of Volkstok’n’barrell decide to target the Caulfield Cup they will require a change of jockey as Williams is already committed to the Japanese stayer Hokko Brave. “As long as our horse is racing well that will sort itself out, they will all be ringing for the ride,” Gibbs said. Lee joins elite company New Zealand’s Danny Lee has officially made the 2015 Presidents Cup team to play the United States in early October. Lee had to finish in the top 42 at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and he has done just that. It wasn’t a comfortable ride for Lee fans though as he produced a round littered by inconsistency. Starting the day in the top ten he dropped 27 places to finish tied for 33ed after shooting a six-over par 77. This season on the PGA

Tour, Lee has recorded some impressive performances, none better than his debut PGA Tour win at the Greenbrier classic back in May. Lee joins a prestigious and small group of New Zealand players to play the Presidents Cup. Frank Nobilo made three appearances back in 1994, 96 and 98. Greg Turner in 1998 and Michael Campbell in 2000 and 2005. The Deutsche Bank Championship had more than enough drama without worrying about

Fowler didn’t have the lead till the 16th hole and at one stage he was three down with eight to play, before dropping two big putts to bring him within striking distance. All Blacks prepare for physical confrontation The All Blacks will come under enormous pressure both physically and mentally at the World Cup and it’s part of the reason why they have focused on increased physicality during training sessions. Assistant coach Ian Foster said it was “business as usual” for the squad, who took part in a training session at Eden Park yesterday morning - with contact being an area of focus that was not necessarily enjoyable. “It was needed,” he said. “Sometimes you don’t have to enjoy something but you know it’s good for you. “What you can’t do is go into a massive test against Argen-

tina in 12 days unprepared and not ready for the physicality that’s going to come.” Sam Cane described the preWorld Cup training session as “full on”, with the flanker wearing the opposing No 7 jersey against Richie McCaw in a training match observed by referee Nick Bryant. “There have been a few boys - me being one of them - who haven’t played a lot of rugby in a little time,” he said. “Getting out there and doing a little bit of rugby contact after a little while of not having it done is always nice.” It’ll be Cane’s first time playing in a World Cup and he’s

keen to learn as much as he can from more experienced teammates. “We’ve got guys who’ve been to three World Cups and we’d be silly not to use their knowledge and experiences. “The key message has been, we’ve got to go out there and earn the right to progress further in the tournament. “We can’t take anything for granted. If you get too far ahead of yourself, who knows what can happen?” Yesterday’s training might have been the last time McCaw runs out at Eden Park. However, Foster says they’re too busy to be thinking about a

succession plan just yet. “We’ll worry about that after Rugby World Cup,” he said. “We’re just too focused on the next six to eight weeks to be thinking too much about that, but we’re happy with who’s in the squad and they’re there for a purpose.” Meanwhile a UK-based Kiwi is inviting the All Blacks to train at his gym, which he plans to turn into a fan zone for the duration of the Rugby World Cup. Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston were notable no-shows at the NRL finals’ series launch on Monday. The skippers of all eight finals sides were expected at the launch at the SCG, however Smith and Thurston were late withdrawals. Melbourne skipper Smith has a virus and North Queensland captain Thurston is battling a leg strain ahead of their respective qualifying final clashes against Sydney Roosters and Brisbane. France ‘should have won’ Sir Clive Woodward has claimed France would have won the 2011 Rugby World Cup final against the All Blacks if the match was ‘refereed properly’. South African referee Craig Joubert was in charge of the final at Eden Park, won by the All Blacks 8-7. Woodward, who coached England to the title in 2003, said France should still be aggrieved about losing the 2011 final. “If I had been the coach of France in that World Cup, I would still be apoplectic to this day,” Woodward said. “If that final had been refereed properly, France would have won.” - AFP

Ashburton College’s junior girls’ basketball team ended an almost unbeaten season with a 52-42 win over Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Intermediate final at the EA Network Centre Stadium last night. The College girls led throughout against a plucky Rangi Ruru side to end their season with a remarkable record

of 27 wins from 28 matches. The solitary loss came in the South Island Secondary Schools’ final against St Hilda’s last week. Ashburton led the first quarter 17-10 and could only maintain a seven point advantage at the end of the second with a 25-18 score, despite a dominant spell. College began the third quarter poorly as the visitors searched for a way back in to the tie with both sides scrapping for

possession, but still ended the third period with a 35-24 lead. Neither team showed signs of fatigue at the end of a long season and battled on with aggression and energy in the final quarter, but Mark Douglas’s players held out to take the intermediate title and record their fourth win over the Christchurch school this year. Douglas said his team’s performance was not as strong as previous ties this campaign but

was pleased with the victory. “It was the ugliest game of basketball we’ve played all year long, the girls would agree, but hey, I’ll take winning ugly any day,” he said. “There was some good aggression, but we came out really badly at the start of the third quarter. “I think that’s probably been the angriest I’ve been all year after a minute of poor basketball, but after a wee frank discussion

they sorted themselves out and we were away laughing.” Douglas praised Rangi Ruru for their gutsy effort and predicted a strong rivalry between the teams in the future. “I said to them, this is going to be the start of a beautiful rivalry. “I think that’s going to be good, those girls are a similar age to our girls so I think that’ll be something that’s going to carry on.”
