Rail shift shunted off town’s radar BY SUE NEWMAN

The relocation of Ashburton’s central town rail head to the north east business park continues to be pushed back on the KiwiRail to-do list at the same time as Ashburton faces increasing competition for industrial land sales. For several years the Ashburton District Council has been pushing to have the shunting yard moved out of town, but at a meeting with KiwiRail, Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said he was left in little doubt that the relocation was well down on the rail company’s priority list. “We were told it had gone from $8 million to a $10 million project and while they might like it, they’re not

cater to quite different markets. The Rolleston park’s market was tied to Christchurch and easy access to the Port of Lyttelton, while Ashburton’s park appealed to niche businesses or locals, already established, but looking to expand, he said. “We have to be realistic, we’re just too far away from Christchurch to be attracting the same businesses.” Businesses relocating to Ashburton were similar to the residential relocation that came after the February 2011 earthquakes, Mr McKay said.
