The relocation of Ashburton’s central town rail head to the north east business park continues to be pushed back on the KiwiRail to-do list at the same time as Ashburton faces increasing competition for industrial land sales. For several years the Ashburton District Council has been pushing to have the shunting yard moved out of town, but at a meeting with KiwiRail, Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said he was left in little doubt that the relocation was well down on the rail company’s priority list. “We were told it had gone from $8 million to a $10 million project and while they might like it, they’re not

Finding money for the relocation was not on the council’s radar, however, if there was sufficient critical mass of business at the new park, then the project could become a goer for both KiwiRail and the council, Mr McKay said. “Unfortunately for us, that critical mass is not there yet.” Critical mass, however, is building around Rolleston, with plans released yesterday for a $500 million industrial and logistics park spread over 122 hectares.
