Statistics show that March is the most dangerous month when it comes to being involved in an alcohol-related crash on Mid Canterbury roads. Statistics acquired for the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service’s Community Alcohol Action Project show that March has had nearly double the

amount of serious and fatal crashes as a result of alcohol than any other month. In data that has been collected for the last 39 years, there has been 31 serious or fatal crashes in the district in March. “We would expect there to be 18 in any other months which is extreme,” Acads health promoter Tania Scott said. “It really is a tragedy to lose that number of people, and the concerning thing

is passengers are not included in those statistics, they just record the crash.” Scott said while some of the older figures may not be as accurate due to changes in the way drunk driving is recorded, the figures are still far too high and a concerning spike.
