An Ashburton farmer who lost livestock worth $70,000 is backing tougher penalties for rustling, passed by Parliament this week. Jill and David Quigley had 36 dairy cows stolen from their Mayfield dairy farm in 2015. Police were not able to locate the thieves. In a unanimous vote by politicians this

week, the theft of livestock or any other animal, including beehives and farm dogs, becomes an offence liable for up to seven years in prison. Also passed as part of the Crime Amendment Bill is the offence of unlawful entry on agricultural land with the intent to steal livestock or to act unlawfully against specified things, such as buildings or machinery on that land. It now carries the same penalty as burglary.

Jill Quigley welcomed the harsher penalties yesterday, saying their dairy business was still playing financial catch-up from the theft of the dairy cows. She said further ramifications of the theft included the loss of milk production and the loss of calves the cows were carrying.
