Early edge, good base for Mt Hutt By Matt Markham
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
An almost 11th-hour snowfall and the combination of more than 25 million litres of water being passed through snowmaking machines have staff at Mt Hutt primed and ready today for one of their best opening days in the past decade. After a hectic week of getting everything set and ready to rock and roll for the season, the gates will officially open on the skifield to the public this morning and they’ll do so with a base better than ski
area manager, James McKenzie, can remember in the past 10 years. There’s up to a one-metre base in some parts of the mountain and a minimum of 50 centimetres on other parts, which means that the entire mountain will be open for business with all trails and lifts fully functional. “It’s been a busy, but great week for us,” McKenzie said. “That snowfall late last week and the cold conditions have meant that we’ve been able to really ramp things up in terms of snowmaking
and we’ve got an incredible base to offer up to everyone to start the season off.” While the snowfall has helped create an impressive platform from which the season can launch, it’s also added to the workloads of staff in the lead-up to today with snow drifts and accumulations in places causing some major work to be undertaken.
