There is a tourism boom at Rakaia, but the most popular destination is not on the town’s list of attractions.

It is the public toilets, which are overloaded with about 1250 visitors per day, higher than the town’s population of about 1200. And while residents welcome tourists to their town, some be-

lieve they should be paying to use the loos. Rakaia Lions Club Alistair Sutherland, who has been working with the Ashburton District Council on plans to upgrade the town’s

tourism hub, believes ratepayers should not be the only ones funding a new toilet block. “If they pay for it, and we get the money coming through, you have a kitty to work with,” Sutherland

said. “Why put up our rates when 1250 people go through here each day?”
