Allenton resident Rex Bennett has been repairing his fence after boy racers that regularly storm Melrose Road crashed into his property once again. At about 11pm on Monday evening he heard the familiar sound of a car speeding along the stretch of gravel road that heads past the Allenton Rugby Club and down to the banks of the Ashburton River.

Bennett said the stretch of road attracts plenty of good sorts throughout the day, many looking to use the cycling track that runs parallel to the river, or head down to the river itself, but at night the “hoons” come out to play. “It is a quite distinctive noise. I knew what had happened when I heard it about 11pm,” he said. “It is just about a nightly occurrence, they just come along and speed up and down the road.

“You could also see where they had done their burn-outs up by the scout den.” In all his years living on the property, Bennett says he has only ever seen one person caught and taking responsibility for their actions.
