In the past year the Ashburton District’s economy grew 2 per cent well short of the heady days of 2013 and 2014 when 7.4 per cent and 5.7 per cent respectively were achieved. At the end of 2018 the district’s GDP sat at $1952 million, with agriculture, forestry and fishing contributing 27.1 per cent or $173 million to the total. Data provided by Informetrics and

available in detail on the Ashburton District Council’s website, showed dairy farming was the largest employer for the district, creating 1970 jobs, 10.3 per cent of the district’s total job number, 19,064. Meat processing was the second biggest employment sector with 1228 jobs, down marginally on 2017. Construction services ranked highest for job creation, with 80 new jobs created last year followed by motor body and trailer manufacturing, 69 new jobs.

In terms of growth industries, electricity, gas, water and waste services ranked number one, followed by manufacturing and administration and support services. Dairy cow numbers continued to grow through to the end of last year, up 5.4 per cent on 2017 to sit at 357,381.
