Trailer burns on SH1 By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Long-weekend holiday traffic was held up south of Ashburton yesterday afternoon after a trailer containing a number of motorcycles caught fire. Firefighters were called out just after 2pm to State Highway 1 near the intersection with Longbeach Road. Ashburton fire chief Alan Bur-
gess said the trailer was well involved with fire by the time they arrived. “There were three quad bikes on the trailer and they were completely destroyed,” he said. “It was well involved when we arrived and there was no hope of saving them. “On appearances it appears there may have been some form of issue with the wheel (on the
trailer) but we will have to look at some photos and take a closer look to figure that out.” Burgess said the people driving the truck towing the trailer had done the right thing by quickly detaching the trailer from their vehicle. “Somebody has alerted them to the fire and overtaken them and waved them down,” he said. Burgess said they were able to
keep traffic flowing to a reasonable level. “It does back up pretty quickly,” he said. The call-out continues a busy period for firefighters who have been called out at all hours in the past 10 days. Burgess said the brigade had been to 12 call-outs last week, with only one falling within usual business hours. “That is unusual for us to have
that kind of swing towards a certain time for call-outs,” he said. “It is really random, they have all been a variety of call-outs with no real patterns.” Yesterday morning firefighters had an early start responding to two false alarms within an hour. At 5.31am they were called to Ashburton New World, before being called to Rosebank in Allenton at 6.10am.
