A local police officer has been criticised for excessive use of force following an arrest in Ashburton last year. A 59-year-old man was injured while in custody at the Ashburton Police Station last July, in an incident the Independent Police Conduct Authority have now described as “unjustified”.
The man had been arrested over driving offences and was allegedly threatening officers at the station when an officer used his leg to sweep him to the ground, injuring his head. He was later taken to hospital for treatment of his injury and as police procedure related to his driving. Findings from the ICPA investigation were released yesterday, stating that the
officer did not act in accordance with the law and police policy. The authority also found that there was a delay in seeking medical attention for the man which was unacceptable.

“I STILL GET TO THE FARM ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK.” I have been a farmer since 1956. The transition into town wasn’t nearly as unsettling as I thought it would be. Yes, my neighbours live a lot closer but you really don’t notice and the Villas are so warm. I still enjoy being able to visit and work on the farm, but now I am living at Lochlea Lifestyle Resort, I have the opportunity to travel as much as I like to. Lance Innes
