Trump decal vandalised

A decal on the wall of a urinal in a Methven pub became the centre of nationwide media attention at the weekend after it was vandalised on Friday night.

The image, of US President Donald Trump, has taken pride and place in the men’s toilets at Methven’s Dubliner Irish Bar & Restaurant for the past two years and while drawing plenty of conversation during its tenure, it’s escaped relatively unscathed, apart from the obvious.

But, on Friday night it was discovered that a patron at the pub had taken offence to the location of the image and ripped it off the urinal, discarding it in a nearby rubbish bin.

Dubliner proprietor, Gary Manning, who runs the popular pub with his wife, Karen, took to social media to share the news of the vandalism in the hope of finding out who was responsible and within hours was fielding calls from almost every news outlet in New Zealand.

“It went ballistic there for a while,” Manning said yesterday.

“I couldn’t quite believe how big it went, we were just a little bit annoyed about the entire situation and wanted to see if anyone knew anything about what had happened.”

The vandalism was reported to the local police who confirmed yesterday they had been made aware of the incident but could offer no further information.

Manning however has done some sleuthing of his own and is reasonably certain he knows who is responsible.

“We had two elderly American gentlemen in here on Friday night and one of them was seen acting a bit suspiciously around the toilet area.

“I’ve since been able to find out that they are walking through the South Island and that they stayed the night at a local accommodation venue and were heard to be boasting in the supermarket about doing something at the Dubliner.

“I’ve got a rather large Finnish lad who works for us and he’s offered to head down the bottom of the South Island and start walking back up in the hope of finding them.

“But I don’t think we need to be going that far.”

Manning said the decal was first introduced during the 2016 election campaign and had proved to be a popular item of interest for visitors. To find out whether or not it’s worth going forward and putting the image back up after the weekend’s mishap, the Mannings have gone to social media to find out whether or not it’s a worthwhile task.

“It’s about $140 to replace it, the old one is in a pretty bad state, so we’re looking at a replacement, I think.

“But you can actually go even further now, they’ve got toilet seats available with the same image, so we might even go a wee bit further.”

As of yesterday, the poll on the Dubliner Facebook page showed an overwhelming percentage of support for seeing the decal returned to its former glory.

College roll booming

Tips for disposing of your chemicals

Ashburton College has had an unexpected roll blow-out of 50 students as it starts the 2019 school year.

That’s significantly up on the Ministry of Education’s predictions, principal Ross Preece said, and while it’s great news for the college, it does come with its own problems.

“It’s fantastic but we’re staffed on what the ministry allowed.

The extra staffing the ministry will cover but not until the end of term one,” he said.

And that means the college has had to juggle class numbers to accommodate the roll growth.

While Year 9 ratios will remain at 1:25, Year 10 could lift to 1:28 or 1:30.

Roll growth had come across all years and Preece is attributing some of the extra numbers to the excellent ERO report the school received last year and to

the breadth of subjects it had on offer.

Extra students inevitably meant extra teachers, and based on anticipated numbers, Preece said he had just completed his last appointment for the new year.

Once a returning Kiwi teacher living in England joined the staff in two or three weeks, the school would be fully staffed, he said.

“Staffing is always an inexact science.

“We advertised three times for a science teacher but there was no-one suitable. Then we advertised over the Christmas break and we got 12 applicants.”

A low number of applicants for advertised positions was common around the district, Preece said, but principals generally managed to find good staff.

That was not the case in many parts of New Zealand where schools advertised vacancies and received no suitable applicants.

■ RESCUE CREW CHALLENGE

Team ready for Rescue Crew Challenge

Two locals are teaming up with their workmates to try and tackle the Rescue Crew Challenge, and raise a few funds.

Held annually, the Rescue Crew Challenge is hosted by the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust and serves as a fundraiser for the organisation.

Teams of four from businesses are encouraged to enter, and two Mid Cantabrians are teaming up with their colleagues from Bayleys to take on the challenge.

Simon Sharpin and Kayla Dynes, alongside Craig Blackburn and Holly Gibson, will take on the challenge that Sharpin is calling a bit of mystery.

“I don’t really know too much about what we are going to be doing,” he said.

“I think it will be a mixture of challenges that are physical and mental stuff like brain challenges.”

Not knowing the exact nature of the challenges has meant that Sharpin has not been able to train specifically for the challenges, but with rugby pre-season beginning, he says he hopes that training will be able to help him

Every group is set the target of raising a minimum of $5000, but Team Bayleys have their sights set higher.

“Every team has the target of $5000 but we are treating that as

a minimum,” he said. “We will be fundraising hard and also hosting a charity auction.

“It is a really great thing to be fundraising for and they do so much good work it is a great thing to be supporting.”

“There was a work email put out about it and I put my hand up, but I wasn’t initially picked but when someone pulled out I put my hand up again,” he said.

Thanks to Consumer, people will now have a one-stop show to find out easily where they can dispose of their hazardous chemicals.

Toxic, corrosive, flammable and explosive products – known as hazardous substances – carry warnings not to throw them out with the general rubbish, but don’t tell you what to do with them instead.

Consumer NZ’s online guide lets consumers select their council and view details about its collection policies, as well as drop-off fees.

“Our survey of all 67 councils found two-thirds accepted unwanted hazardous chemicals year-round at the landfill, a waste transfer station or a recycle centre.

Another three offered regular collection events. But 18 didn’t give residents any way to dispose of these chemicals,” Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said.

“Unless you know what you’re looking for, this information can be really hard to find on many local government websites. We hope our guide will make it easier for people to dispose of these products safely.”

Consumer NZ asked more than 3000 of its members about the most common chemicals in their homes and if they knew how to dispose of these substances. The guide is based on often-used products that require special disposal.

Hazardous chemicals must carry an on-pack warning or symbol.

These substances shouldn’t be put in the general rubbish collection as they can cause serious harm to human health or the environment.

Scholarships handed out

Thirty-one scholarships totalling more than $70,000 were handed out to a group of deserving young locals last week courtesy of the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation Awards ceremony.

Advance Ashburton executive officer, Sandi Woods, said the list of achievements amongst those awarded scholarships highlighted the wealth of outstanding youth in the Ashburton District and that the list could have been bigger.

“This year was our biggest year yet with nearly 120 applications,” she said.

“Not only did we receive record numbers, but all our interviewers commented on the high calibre of applicants.

“It is so very pleasing to see the extraordinary talent that is being produced in the Ashburton District.

“We should all stand very proud of being part of this wonderful community.”

The Advance Ashburton Community Foundation scholarship programme is made possible through the generosity of many from within the community.

As highlighted in the list of recipients below, the donations cover a wide-ranging number of aspects of the community, from groups, families and individuals who have all expressed a keen desire to give back and help the youth of the Ashburton District continue to prosper.

“Every donation the foundation receives is invested and grown, with the income generated funding local causes year on year, as per the donors’ wishes.

“Because of this simple, effective and long-lasting structure our donors have the comfort that their generosity is supporting the causes they are most passionate about and driving positive long-term change in our district, and, will continue to do so for many generations to come.”

Protection for police

In brief Search for driver Police are searching for the “out of control” driver who smashed into a group of party-goers in West Auckland just after midnight on Saturday. It is understood the driver left the scene just after the “horrific” incident on Clayburn Road in Glen Eden, before emergency services arrived at the scene, a police spokeswoman said.

A police spokesman said two people were struck by a car and treated for minor injuries at Waitakere Hospital. A further four people were taken to Waitakere Hospital with minor to moderate injuries, the police spokesperson said .- NZME

Hospital fire Emergency services were last night battling a fire at Wellington Hospital. A police spokeswoman said Fire and Emergency New Zealand received the call around 5.35pm about a fire on the roof above a unit. She said police were notified at 5.55pm.

New body armour is being rolled out to police officers around the country, but it may be a while yet before we see local officers on the beat wearing the new gear.

Police commissioner Mike Bush last week announced new, enhanced body armour to be delivered to all officers in New Zealand, but Ashburton senior sergeant Matt Emery has yet to be given a date it will be handed out in the district.

“I suspect they will go through the bigger districts first so after Auckland and Wellington and then on to Canterbury, but that is only my guess,” he said.

“We have two new recruits coming in March so they will likely be equipped with it.”

The new body armour will be custom fitted to each officer, and will allow each individual officer to customise where they can store their equipment on the vest, moving weight off their belts.

“When I look back at when I first graduated all I got was a cotton shirt and a wooden baton, now everything is fit for purpose,” he said.

The new body armour that will be rolled out to all Police officers across New Zealand was announced on Thursday.

“We are also getting new highvis vests with cut-out holes that will allow us to access the equipment which will be a big advantage as well.”

While police officers in the district do not often have to put the full life-saving potential of the vests into effect, there are still benefits to the vests.

“While the stab-resistant element isn’t often used, they can be handy for protection for minor scrapes and scuffles if you end up on the ground.”

Police is investing $20.7m over four years to replace the existing body armour with the new body armour system.

This includes making the body armour, measuring and fitting each officer correctly for a custom fit, and rolling out the new

body armour across the country.

The replacement process began in 2014 with a substantial review of current body armour.

The review found that the current level of protection was sufficient to meet risks in an operational environment.

However, opportunities were identified for enhancement, especially for carriage of equipment, comfort, and integration of ballistic armour plates.

Busy raising funds to help people in need

At first glance it might be difficult to find any synergies between an insurance company and a disaster aid charity, but look again and there’s plenty the two have in common.

Both make their business dealing with people who need assistance in some form, and that’s the link that ties the two together, says AMI customer services officer Georgia Dix. The team from Ashburton’s AMI have been hard at work raising money for Red Cross and recently Dix handed over the income from raffles, sausage sizzles and other fundraising events to two of the organisation’s Ashburton volunteers.

The $600 raised will now become part of Red Cross’ funding pool to be used as and when required for people in need.

A veteran drag racer killed while racing his dragbike at Meremere Dragway on Saturday afternoon was a keen engineer with a passion for racing. Lawrence Webster, 66, also known as Laurie, from Pukekohe, died after his bike crashed just at the end of a race during the dragway’s third meet of the season. Emergency services were called to the track on Saturday at 2.42pm, but he died at the scene.

Funding package The Government has allocated up to $100 million from its Provincial Growth Fund to support Māori economic development by providing access to capital. It has also earmarked a further $27m to strengthen transport infrastructure and the horticulture sector in Kaipara. Making the announcement just days before Waitangi Day at the Otamatea Marae in Kaipara, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the $100m would help build prosperity for Māori and help unlock the economic potential of Māori in the regions. The sum of money is significant, and constitutes 10 per cent of the fund’s $1 billion-a-year allocation.

In a statement, Ardern said access to capital was a challenge for Māori landowners as the special status of their land meant commercial banks had been less willing to lend money.

Jump on board for some fun

W

e enjoy board games, and when my parents visited us I wanted to share the experience with my mother, who would initially have nothing to do with board games.

Then I introduced her to Dixit, a game in which players interpret artistic cards. She is an artist, so she was drawn into the game and enjoyed it so much she now wants to buy a copy herself.

While kids today are fascinated

by Xbox and PlayStation games (or the occasional game on the smartphone), a gamer doesn’t have to be someone who enjoys sitting in front of a screen, as we see a rise of a culture revolving around board games, or table-top games.

Board games don’t just bring us together – they remind us how to interact with each other.

They bring back social dynamics and even family together time.

They teach useful lessons about handling defeat and taking turns.

They require friends and family members to sit down and interact with each other – increasingly important in a world where we spend much of our time in with our own screens.

The real action happens around the table, rather than

on the board, as players practice diplomacy, make and break alliances, develop vendettas and pull off hustles. Cards Against Humanity allows friends (adults) to shed aside any political correctness and be rude together in a funny way.

They also teach us valuable lessons in a fun way.

Catan is a resource-management game, defined by position and strategising.

It’s a social game, defined by horse-trading of resource cards.

Pandemic casts players as a team of medics attempting to

rid the planet of four deadly and highly infectious diseases.

Dead of Winter challenges a group of survivors to stay alive in a world overrun by flesh-eating zombies.

Freedom – The Underground Railroad examines the history of the US abolitionist movement.

Monopoly teaches some economy concepts (although some think these are the wrong ideas, which led to the creation of the game Anti-Monopoly).

Risk and Ticket To Ride teach geography. Chess and many games involve planning a long-

term strategy. Dixit allows people to interpret art in a creative way.

And games also bring cultures together. Risk was initially released as La Conquête du Monde (The Conquest of the World) in France. Settlers of Catan, a popular resource trading game, was first called Die Siedler von Catan when it came out in Germany.

Carcassonne, another popular game, was developed by a German games designer and named after the medieval fortified town of Carcassonne in southern France, famed for its city walls.

Monopoly was initially invent-

ed in the USA as The Landlord’s Game by Lizzie Magie and later distributed with its current name by the Parker Brothers company.

A special edition of it was used by the British Secret Intelligence Service in World War II to help prisoners of war held by the Nazis, with hidden maps, compasses and real money to help them escape.

These games bring people together, no matter the age from the age of 7 to 77.

And you don’t have to have a mastery of the English language for most games, as the rules are usually simple enough to understand. On the other hand, you could use some of these games to improve your English if you want to.

When at the end of the day you are too tired for a small talk, focusing on well-defined rules frees you to interact with others and enjoy their company.

It allows strangers to bond over a shared experience.

The Newcomers’ Network will have our first Board Games Club night on Sunday, February 10 at 6pm at Community House on 44 Cass Street. Bring your favourite game with you and join us. All welcome.

Multicultural Bite Process leading to the event

O

rganising this big event is a long extensive process but a worthwhile pursuit.

It starts with the approval of the council for the event to take place, followed by the application for and approval of the Traffic Management Plan.

Once approved, organising and co-ordinating the people involved starts.

It includes the conduct of stallholders’ night – explaining the Food Safety Seminar and do’s and don’ts in food handling and preparation.

Contacting of prospect performers is also done, as well as organising the volunteers to do specific duties prior, during and after the event. Aside from these there are a lot of licences and other matters that needs to be adhered to.

The trustees meet once a month, and weekly (for a month) preceding the event.

These meetings are necessary to discuss and decide for the matters arising from the organising and co-ordinating of the event.

As all trustees are busy with their own jobs and other commitments, we use social media to interact and further discuss things when we can’t manage to meet and held a meeting.

It helped us to effectively carry through our organising despite our busy schedules and to plan a great event.

What to expect on the day?

E

xpect a wide array of cuisines from around the world.

We have an overwhelming response as per stallholder registration. There are more than 20 stallholders for this year. I think this is the largest number compared to the previous years.

They are from Philippines, Singapore, Egypt, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Samoa, Ukraine, Aotearoa/NZ, Brazil, Italy, Malaysia, Argentina, Pasifika Group, Peru, and South Korea. Netherlands is the newest

country to join the list.

We also have a long list of performances prepared for. Our main performer for this year is the Chitongo Marimba African Drummers from Zimbabwe. They started as a family band and eventually their friends joined them.

They advise the public to wear their dancing shoes and have fun!

The other performers completing the programme are: Ocean, Ashburton Silver Band, Nepalese Dancer – Obisha, Laghmor Filipino Cultural Group, Ashburton Pipe Band, Cordillera Administrative Region in New Zealand (CAR-NZ), Ashburton Fale Pasifika, TK Paul, Indian Dancers – TeAwhina and Kaveesha, Turks Band, and the Christchurch Zhonghua Chinese Society.

This year’s activity booth is as exciting as the food stalls and programme.

We have Chinese Calligraphy and Language Tutorial, Korean Writing and Language Tutorial, Maori Tattoo Stencilling, Indian Henna Tattoo, Face Painting, Cook Island Language and Sarong Tying Tutorial, Cultural Exhibit, World Map and NZ Map Pinning, and a Photo booth.

We will be bringing back the Cultural Fashion Parade this year – Children and Adult Category.

Aside from the Best in Cultural Dress, other awards to be given are Best Bite and Best Stall where the stallholders will decorate their stall representing best their culture.

PROFILE - Ida Valerie Casipit

I

am Ida Valerie Casipit, 34 years old, born and raised in the Philippines.

I came to New Zealand in 2009 and have been a naturalised citizen of this beautiful country since 2015. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, major in management in the Philippines.

I had to come to NZ because this is where my husband found his bread and butter. Because we do not want to live far from each other, I decided to leave my life in the Philippines to be with my husband and create our own family here, specifically in Ashburton.

When I came to New Zealand, I was unsure of what my career’s fate would be knowing that competition is high in a foreign country. At first, it was a struggle specially with the thought of being far away from my loved ones.

I found solace through serving as a volunteer for the Filipino Dairy Workers in New Zealand (FDWNZ) – a Filipino non-profit organisation.

In the Philippines I did office work. But as we came here, the struggle is real – to look for a job the same as what we have in the Philippines. We need to start all over again and prove our worth to this foreign land. At first it was frustrating as letters of rejection filled my mailbox. But then I came to accept that maybe my time hasn’t come yet. That’s the

Ida Valerie Casipit time I’ve come to accept and enjoy whatever opportunities that come along the way. As long as my husband and I are together, that’s what matters the most.

I really found solace with being a volunteer to FDWNZ. I spent much of my time helping and organising events. It took my attention away from the pain of rejection and from homesickness.

I became so busy I didn’t have time to realise how fast time was passing.

I also became a member of a Catholic group called Couples for Christ (CFC) where I organise some of its events and activities and became one of the leaders as a Handmaid of the Lord and am now serving the CFC community with my husband and daughter. In CFC I found my spiritual growth and my trust in God strengthened.

I previously worked at Countdown for two years where I experienced working at the bakery, deli, checkout and pricing department. They also gave me a chance to work at the office for a short period of time where I experienced doing banking and payroll. Afterwards I decided to work in ANZCO (the then CMP) and I lasted for three years until I became pregnant with our daughter. I then left CMP to look after our daughter. While I was a stay at home mum, FDWNZ decided to make me their administrator.

I officially became the event co-ordinator of FDWNZ in 2010 and the group’s administrator in 2017. Over the years, the group has organised several community events such as: Bayanihan (Co-operative Endeavour) – a fundraising event for the Typhoon Haiyan Victims; Flores De Mayo (Flowers of May) – A Filipino Cultural Festival; Filipino Mobile Consular Services, and the Filipino South Island Games amongst others.

Also, FDWNZ organises activities all year round which includes the annual basketball league, Cosplay contest, Christmas party, and seminars to say the least.

My eight years of experience in organising the group’s events with 100–400 (or more) expected guests and spectators has moulded my organising capabilities which landed me an opportunity

to become this year’s Multicultural Bite organiser (with the event coming up on East Street on Wednesday from 10am to 2pm).

Aside from organising events, I also do party decorating. We have a decorating business called Bubbly Dekorz. It is a small-scale decorating business that has been known within the Filipino community since 2013.

What I like the most in Ashburton is the peaceful environment and the friendly people. I also love how culturally diverse Ashburton is as I tend to understand and know more of other’s cultures.

Before I came here in New Zealand, my husband wanted to move to Christchurch. When I discovered it was a city, I asked him if we could just stay in Ashburton. It is because Ashburton I believe is somewhat laid back, and in the Philippines, I was living in a province all my life, hence I was used to a quiet and simple life.

I have made friends here, which is one of the factors why I don’t want to leave Ashburton. There are a lot of nice people here.

Filipinos, Kiwis and other nationalities have harmonious relationship. That kind of community is so hard to leave behind.

I do miss my previous country very dearly. Especially every Christmas and New Year as our families gather together and have

a feast. It is only me, my husband any my 4-year-old daughter here in New Zealand. All our families are in the Philippines. There is always a part of us that is left there. We are glad we can video call them every day. That technology helps us a lot in our homesickness.

I actually dreamed of having my own decorating business, but as my career progressed to event co-ordinating, I would love to see myself continuing being an event co-ordinator. These two might go hand in hand, let’s just see what the future holds.

As of now I am still the FDWNZ’s administrator and we have events and activities lined up for the year and the years to come.

As for the Multicultural Bite, I am very excited to have been a part of this wonderful event as it celebrates the rich cultural diversity of Ashburton. We’ll see how it goes for the years to come.

Townsville dam swells Tornadoes could affect Queensland’s flooded north with reports of high winds downing trees in Townsville, where up to 500 homes have already been inundated.

Townsville is in uncharted territory after the city copped more rain over the past week than it’s ever seen before.

Its seven-day rainfall tally of 1012mm eclipsed the previous record of 886mm, set in the year of the city’s devastating 1998 floods.

Townsville mayor Jenny Hill said days of danger were ahead, as the weather bureau warned of a serious situation as intense rain again fell over the catchment of the city’s swollen Ross River Dam. The dam is at 236 per cent of capacity and continues to rise.

She couldn’t rule up ramping up dam releases in a bid to protect the majority of the city from widespread flooding.

“We don’t know when this event will end ... We cannot give you any certainty about what we are going to need to do into the future,” she told reporters.

Local police chief and District Disaster Co-ordinator Steve Munro said the city was at the halfway point of its flood emergency, with very heavy rain expected until mid-week.

“At the moment we have probably got 400, 500 (homes) affected ... it could move up to the 10,000, 20,000 (mark),” he said.

“That’s the worst case scenario we’re looking at if things keep going pearshaped.”

The Bureau of Meteorology said intense rain resumed yesterday over the catchment of the Ross River Dam. It said storms were expected to cause dangerous flash flooding in the warning area.

Police said the river broke its banks yesterday afternoon in the Townsville suburb of Aitkenvale – one of a raft of communities that faced fresh flood warnings.

Further flooding in Townsville is likely with more rain forecast this week.

About 10,000 properties remain without power across the city.

The heaviest rain overnight was north of Townsville.

Ingham coped a staggering half a metre of rain in less than 24 hours, and nearby Halifax 415mm, but authorities say those communities are not in any imminent danger.

The monsoon trough that’s generating potentially damaging winds and flooding rain is now expected to affect communities further south.

A severe weather warning zone now extends from Ingham to Mackay.

Out west, flooding rains have also arrived including in the drought-affected town of Hughenden. Flooding is now expected on the northern side of the Flinders River and properties are likely to be affected, with residents told to consider moving.

teorology said the monsoon trough had the potential to generate tornadoes, with warnings current for 100km/h winds.

“There is some chance of tornadoes forming ... there is enough favourable wind sheer to make that possible,” he said on Sunday.

Townsville authorities said rising winds were already bringing down trees there.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has again ordered schools that were closed in north Queensland on Friday to remain closed today. More schools might be added to the list later in the day.

Eleven council areas have been affected by the disaster, which has been declared a catastrophe by insurers, with early losses of more than $16 million and certain to rise.

“We are in unprecedented times. There is more rain to come,” the premier said.

Royals to evacuate if Brexit prompts riots British officials have revived Cold War emergency plans to relocate the royal family if there are riots in London if Britain suffers a disruptive departure from the European Union next month.

“These emergency evacuation plans have been in existence since the Cold War, but have now been repurposed in the event of civil disorder following a no-deal Brexit,” the Sunday Times said, quoting an unnamed source from the government’s

Cabinet Office, which handles sensitive administrative issues.

The Mail on Sunday also said it had learnt of plans to move the royal family, including the Queen, to safe locations away from London.

Britain’s government is struggling to get parliamentary support for a Brexit transition agreement with the EU before the departure date of March 29, and the government and businesses are preparing

contingency plans for a ‘no-deal’ Brexit.

Business groups have warned of widespread disruption if there are lengthy delays to EU imports due to new customs checks, and even possible shortages of food and medicine.

Last month an annual speech by the 92-year-old Queen to a local women’s group was widely interpreted in Britain as a call for politicians to reach agreement over Brexit.

The Queen – the longest reigning monarch in British history – is about to mark 67 years on the throne. Princess Elizabeth became Queen on February 6, 1952 on the death of her beloved father George VI. The monarch is only three years away from her Platinum Jubilee – 70 years on the throne – which would be a first for a British sovereign.

The Queen is expected to spend the 67th anniversary of her accession on Wednesday privately at Sandringham, where she has been staying during her annual winter break.

Elton’s three NZ shows Sir Elton John has announced he is bringing his farewell tour to New Zealand for three massive shows next summer.

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour will see John deliver his greatest hits to audiences around the world. Last of refugee children to leave Nauru No more asylum seeker children will be held on Nauru with the final four preparing to fly to the US with their families for resettlement.

They are the last of the more than 200 children who had been held at the island’s processing centre when the coalition won government in 2013, marking a milestone for the Morrison government.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said yesterday it was vindication of the coalition’s Operation Sovereign Borders policy.

When he took over as leader at the end of August, there were 109 children in immigration detention on Nauru.

“Since then, and as was made clear at the time, we have been working quietly and methodically through this process without compromising the integrity of Operation Sovereign Borders,” Mr Morrison said in a joint statement with Immigration Minister David Coleman.

“We have got all the children Labor put in detention centres out, and we have shut down all the detention centres Labor opened, including on Christmas Island.”

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten welcomed the news while querying whether the government should really be taking all the credit.

“I do believe if the crossbench and the opposition and some of the progressive Liberals hadn’t pursued this, I do wonder if the children would have been off,” he said.

Greens leader Richard di Natale said it was long overdue for those children.

Asylum seeker advocates, including the Human Rights Law Centre, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, the National Justice Project and Maurice Blackburn Lawyers also applauded the move but warned there was a continuing medical crisis for those adults remaining in immigration detention on Nauru and Manus Island.

Daughter for Lynskey Kiwi acting superstar Melanie Lynskey and long-term partner Jason Ritter have confirmed the birth of their first child. Speculation over whether the actress had given birth or not had been rife on social media ever since director Neema Barnette posted a congratulatory message to the couple last December.

Despite the high interest the pair did not respond or issue a statement, a stance which led to ongoing speculation. The mystery finally came to an end with Lynskey tweeting they had welcomed a daughter in December.

Folk artist coming to town Swedish singer songwriter Sofia Talvik is stopping by in New Zealand on her world tour.

And her Kiwi destinations include Ashburton, where she will regale crowds with her blend of “sparkle and melancholy” on February 17 in an open hat performance.

The Americana/folk artist has mapped out the world one small city at a time since 2011, touring through 47 American states and many countries in Europe.

It is in celebrating the 2019 release of her eighth studio album that she is embarking on her latest world tour, with stops in Europe, America and New Zealand.

Talvik said Greenland was to date the most remote place she had ever performed, and now travelling to the other side of the globe was exciting.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the pictures and movies I’ve seen from New Zealand, it looks so amazing and I’m a sucker for beautiful landscapes,” Talvik said.

“It’s always an inspiration to see new places and meet new people, so maybe this will result in a few new songs down the road.”

Reviewers say Talvik is an avid storyteller with a voice comparable to singer songwriters such as Joni Mitchell.

Her delicate songs are performed in an intimate way, maximising Talvik’s angelic voice, which is enhanced only by a tasteful mix of harmonies and delays, accompanied by the steady picking of her acoustic guitar and the rhythm section consisting of her own two feet, bells and a stomp box.

Dubbed “A North Sea siren blending sparkle and melancholy”, Talvik is a veteran performer whose music has a special tint of her Scandinavian heritage, making her a favourite with many music lovers.

Unpublished Salinger work to be released One of the book world’s greatest mysteries is finally ending: JD Salinger’s son says previously unpublished work by his late father will be coming out.

Matt Salinger has confirmed longstanding reports that the author of The Catcher in the Rye had continued to write decades after he stopped publishing books. He said that he and Salinger’s widow, Colleen, are preparing the material for release.

“He wanted me to pull it together, and because of the scope of the job, he knew it would take a long time,” Salinger said of his father, who died in 2010 and had not published work since the mid-1960s.

“This was somebody who was writing for 50 years without publishing, so that’s a lot of material. So there’s not a reluctance or a protectiveness: When it’s ready, we’re going to share it,” he said.

Salinger, who helps oversee his father’s literary estate, says any new work might be years away and did not cite any specific titles or plots. He did indicate that the Glass family made famous in such fiction as “Franny and Zooey” would be seen again.

“I feel the pressure to get this done, more than he did,” he said, adding that the unseen work “will definitely disappoint people that he wouldn’t care about, but for real readers .

Hapworth 16, 1924, which appeared in The New Yorker in 1965.

Salinger rarely spoke to the media and not only stopped releasing new work but rejected any reissues or e-book editions of his published material. This year marks the centennial of his birth and signs of a new openness emerged in 2018 when his estate permitted new covers and a boxed edition of his old fiction to come out for the 100th anniversary. A Salinger exhibit is planned later this year at the New York Public Library, and other promotional events are in the works.

Over the past half-century, rumors and speculation intensified over if any new books existed and if they were of publishable quality. A former lover, Joyce Maynard, and Salinger’s daughter, Margaret, have both contended that the author continued to write books, allegedly stored in a vault in the author’s home in Cornish, New Hampshire.

A 2013 documentary and book by Shane Salerno and David Shields cited two “independent and separate sources” in predicting five new works. One of the Salinger books would centre on Catcher protagonist Holden Caulfield and his family. Others would draw on Salinger’s World War Two years and his immersion in Eastern religion. Matt Salinger has dismissed the contents of the Salerno-Shields project, but never definitively said that no new work would appear.

QUICK RECIPE

Key lime pie 250g gingernut biscuits 150g butter, melted 1 x can condensed milk 3 medium egg yolks finely grated zest and juice of 4 limes 300ml double cream 1 T icing sugar extra lime zest, to decorate ■ Heat the oven to 160°C. ■ Crush gingernuts, mix with melted butter and press into the base and up the sides of a 22cm loose-based tart tin. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove and cool.

■ Put three medium egg yolks in a large bowl and whisk for a minute with electric beaters.

■ Add a can of condensed milk and whisk for 3 minutes, then add the finely grated zest and juice of 4 limes and whisk again for 3 minutes.

■ Pour the filling into the cooled base then put back in the oven for 15 minutes. Cool then chill for at least 3 hours. When you are ready to serve, carefully remove the pie from the tin and put on a serving plate.

■ To decorate, softly whip together 300ml double cream and 1 T icing sugar. Dollop or pipe the cream onto the top of the pie and finish with extra lime zest.

Vandalism puts spotlight on Methven G

ary and Karen Manning are annoyed, and rightly so, but even they will have to admit that once the dust settles, the attention drawn by the vandalism of a urinal decal over the weekend is about as good as publicity can get.

The popular couple who run the Dubliner Irish Bar & Restaurant in Methven became the centre of the media’s attention at the weekend when it was discovered a popular novelty item in their establishment had been damaged.

Basically, males would go to the toilet at the pub and enjoy, or not enjoy, depending on political preference or nationality, relieving themselves on the face of a US president.

But someone on Friday night didn’t like that very much and

they pulled the adhesive decal off the urinal wall and threw it into a nearby rubbish bin. Hygiene aside, you’d have to be in a pretty mad state of mind at the image to want to go that far, but someone did.

Even upon discovery of the vandalism, you would think that not even the Mannings would have realised what this tale of intentional damage would bring in terms of coverage for their establishment in little old Mid Canterbury.

A quick post to Facebook turned into a media onslaught with every major news organisation in the country wanting in on the tale of someone destroying an image of the US president which people go to the toilet on.

And all of a sudden, a huge amount of the New Zealand population who perhaps hadn’t heard of Methven’s Irish pub, or even Methven itself, were fully aware of the place.

So, even in the darkest of tunnels there can still be some light there.

Money cannot actually buy publicity and advertising like that and you can almost be certain now that for everyone one person who might disagree with the light-hearted bit of fun, there’ll be at least 10 others who enjoy it.

Social media certainly has

proven that in the past couple of days.

In a poll, asking followers of the Dubliner whether they should reinstall the image, the Mannings have had overwhelming results in favour of it’s return.

At last check last night that support was close to 90 per cent.

So, yes, it’s disappointing that a visitor to our district felt it was OK to enter into an establishment and vandalise a piece of property in that building, whatever their intentions were.

But, there’s a bit to be said for the spotlight it’s put on the Dubliner, Methven and the Ashburton District and it only seems to be good news. And good on Gary and Karen for trying to get the most out of it.

Bad news turned into good is always great to see.

How will proposed reforms affect our local schools?

ll our region’s students should be back at school this week, hopefully refreshed after the summer holidays.

While for many parents and pupils it will be a case of re-establishing existing routines, for those starting at a new school, it can often be a bigger process of adjustment.

In the broader context, our entire school system looks set for a major overhaul following the release late last year of a report by an independent taskforce into New Zealand’s education system.

This report recommended radical changes to the way our schools are run including removing most of the powers currently held by school boards of trustees.

Under the proposed reforms, the Ministry of Education’s 10 regional offices would be replaced with 20 education hubs, each responsible for around 125 schools.

Each of these hubs would take over responsibility for schools’ property, funding and student achievement and the hiring of

school principals, as well as co-ordinating pools of relief teachers and teacher aides for the schools in the hub area.

I know from my own experience as a chairperson of the board of trustees at the local primary school my children were attending at the time that these boards do have a lot of responsibilities and challenges to navigate.

However, being a board member is also a very rewarding opportunity for those that choose to take it on.

Being a board member enables parents to give back to their communities in a meaningful way and to develop a broader understanding of the context of their children’s education.

While some school boards do struggle with managing their responsibilities currently, many are working extremely well.

It is therefore important that parents understand the impact of these changes would which remove a lot of decision-making abilities from school communities.

It is proposed under the new system that schools would get less funding for students from outside their enrolment zone and the number of out-of-zone students would be capped at each school.

A significant change for integrated schools would be that they would no longer be allowed to select out-of-zone or non-preference students and would instead have to hold a ballot in the same manner as state schools.

This change may have affect some families living in Selwyn wanting to send their children to integrated schools in Christchurch.

The report also recommends a major redistribution of resources so that priority is first given to

meeting the needs of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

This follows on from work that the previous National Government had initiated to replace the current decile system with funding targeted towards students with specific risk factors.

Public consultation on the recommendations of the Tomorrow’s Schools Review taskforce is open until April 7 this year.

The original street lamps are still standing in town (although no longer in use), but the first light to be powered by electricity in 1888 still shines nightly on the Oddfellows Hall, on Bridge Street.

Back in the day, Reefton was named Quartzopolis, in deference to its huge gold mining industry.

You can still pan for gold in the rivers or talk to The Bearded Miners on Broadway. Entry is by donation to check out the relics of Reefton’s mining days, where a bearded old-timer will introduce you to the different rocks, precious metals and gold found in the area – and how to pan for gold.

Just 3km south of Reefton on State Highway 7, the satellite village of Blacks Point is richly wreathed in mining history, with a slew of hiking and biking trails on offer, like the fabulous Murray Creek Track.

by John Bougen, who made his fortune co-founding DressSmart.

Falling head over heels with Reefton’s heritage and future potential, John has purchased and restored a dozen town buildings, including the stunning old court, the School of Mines, the art gallery and jail.

The gnarly old swingbridge, draped across the Inangahua River, is a cracker.

No, you’re not seeing double, it’s the MacKay twins (Nigel and Steffan), leading a tour foraging for the ingredients that go into the spirits.

But the latest head-turner in town, and veritable traffic-stopper, is the Reefton Distilling Company.

It was the brainchild of Patsy Bass, who was born in Reefton, and shifted back home from Christchurch three years ago.

Patsy told me that she was inspired to embark upon establishing the distillery, after chatting to tourists who would frequently bemoan the lack of anything uniquely Reefton to take back home with them.

“A dreamcatcher from a mainstreet gift store doesn’t it cut it,” she rightly told me.

To cut a long story short, Patsy and her business partner established the venture, securing well over 100 investors, including John Bougen.

This charming distillery is breathing new life into the original Haralds general store from the 1870s, which has been meticulously restored to house the working distillery, tasting bar and retail store.

Opened since October, it’s proven to be an instant hit. With ambitious but prudent expansion plans, the premium small batch distilled spirits are crafted on-site by West Coast distiller, Nick Secker.

And the distillery lovingly salutes Reefton’s swash-buckling heritage, natural beauty and local characters.

Producing gin, vodka, whis-

ky and seasonal fruit liqueurs, their Little Biddy range of gins honours Bridget Goodwin, the pipe-smoking, gin-toting, 4-foottall goldminer who travelled from Ireland to the West Coast to prospect for gold in the 1860s, fleeing from her abusive husband.

George Fairweather Moonlight was the first to discover Moonlight Creek, famed for where some of the largest gold nuggets were ever found in New Zealand.

Moonlight Creek is also a source of ultra-pure water, located just 40 minutes from the distillery.

Be sure to try the Wild Rain Vodka, and over summer, the Tayberry Liqueur is another insatiably hot-seller, unbelievably delicious when poured over ice-cream.

But it’s The Little Biddy Gin, bursting with locally sourced and selected botanicals, like Douglas Fir tips, which is the runaway taste sensation. When I called into the distillery in mid-January, it was literally flying off the shelves and log-jamming the online ordering system.

Patsy showed me through the working operations of the distillery, where all of the bottles are labelled by hand. Accentuating the brand’s narrative, its celebratory embrace of its sense of place, are the sightseeing tours operated from the distillery.

The Biddy’s Backyard Premium Tour delivers authentic and indelible insights into Reefton’s

heart and soul.

The tours are led by two of the town’s local legends, Nigel and Steffan MacKay. The twin brothers have just turned 70 and you could not wish for a more entertaining double-act.

Not only do these lads seem to have come straight out of central casting, but they should be on stage. Unstoppably engaging and always dressed in identical clothing, they regaled me with local anecdotes and nuggets of history, throughout the tour, as we hopscotched around town, taking in sights like Biddy’s grave.

They will also take you foraging for the ingredients that go into the spirits, in the same verdant West Coast rainforest where Little Biddy once prospected for gold.

And they’ll enlighten you with an array of historic gems, like how Reefton’s main-street was originally The Strand, where the skatepark is. However, after a major flood, many of the historic buildings were carted one street back from the river, to Broadway.

You can still see the bolts on the back of some of those buildings, from when they were relocated.

Tinwald clings to lead

Tinwald remain the frontrunners to take out round two of this summer’s Mid Canterbury Tennis A grade competition after just sneaking past Southern in Saturday’s latest round.

Heading into the third matchups of round two Tinwald held a slender four-point lead over first round winners Allenton, but with Allenton suffering a narrow loss to Fairton, Tinwald are now in the box seat.

Tinwald’s 4-2 win over Southern was set up by wins in both of the doubles matches, with the four singles matches shared.

In the top doubles, Peter Leonard and Cameron McCracken combined to make a formidable combination which proved far too good for Southern’s Jason Feutz and Gareth Evans, winning 6-1 6-0.

issa Allan beat Aidan Watt and Mathieu Lucas 6-3 6-3 in the bottom doubles.

McCracken’s stellar singles season continued with a 6-1 6-1 win over Feutz, while Ashleigh Leonard took the number two spot for the singles and lost to Evans in a third set super tie-breaker.

Southern’s second win came in the three singles in another super tie-break, with Watt beating Allan, while Tim Groves came into the Tinwald side for the number four singles and beat Lucas 6-2 6-3.

Tinwald only winning 4-2 meant if Allenton could win big, they could narrow the gap on the leaderboard, but Fairton had other ideas and moved into second spot after holding the round one winners to a 3-all draw on matches and then winning on a countback of games 54-50.

Wins were hard to come by for Fairton in round one, but they

were on fire on Saturday, taking out both of the doubles matches.

Rhys Cromie and Neil Fowler combined to win the top doubles for Fairton, beating Andre van Rooyen and Bryn Looij 6-4 6-3, while Phil Crozier and John Leslie also took a win for Fairton, beating Matt Bubb and Jacob Pye 6-2 6-3.

Other than Cromie’s 6-1 6-0 win over van Rooyen in the top singles, the singles matches belonged to Allenton.

Fowler was making his first appearance in A grade tennis in some time and he lost his singles to Looij 6-2 6-4 at two, while Bubb beat Crozier 6-4 6-1 at three, and Pye beat Leslie 7-5 6-2 at four.

The day’s other match-up between Hampstead and Methven was won by Hampstead 4-2, and just like in the other two matches it was a win set up by wins in both doubles matches.

Aidan Mitchell and Connor Brosnahan ook out their top doubles against Lee Gilbert and Pete Kirwan 6-2 6-1, while Michael Kerr and Erin Connelly-Whyte beat Josh Jones and Marty Amos 6-4 6-2 in the bottom doubles.

Jones and Amos turned the tables completely in the singles matches though, with Jones downing Matthew Hopkins in the three singles 6-1 6-4 and Amos beating Connelly-Whyte 6-4 6-1 at four.

Hampstead wrapped the tie up at the top of the order, with Mitchell beating Gilbert 6-0 6-3 in the top singles, and Brosnahan beating Kirwan in a third set super tie-break.

Meanwhile in A reserve action on Saturday the Allenton Wekas beat the Allenton Kakapos 6-0 and Hampstead just edged out Southern/Wakanui on a countback of games 52-49.

Bobby Reid has scored twice as Cardiff City beat Bournemouth 2-0 in an English Premier League game that turned into a celebration of Bluebirds player Emiliano Sala, who is missing and presumed dead following a plane crash. The Cardiff players held up a T-shirt bearing the image of the 28-year-old Sala, who never played a game for the club, after Reid rifled home a penalty to give the relegation-threatened hosts the lead in the fifth minute. Reid added a second goal 15 seconds after the break to put his side two up and seal three valuable points.

Mariners fatigued Central Coast coach Mike Mulvey admits fatigue is partly to blame for the fadeouts that have resulted in heartbreaking defeats in consecutive weeks. The Mariners almost pulled off the upset of the season when they held a two-goal lead over defending champions Melbourne Victory on Saturday. However Mulvey’s side conceded twice in the second half and, as they did last week, could only watch as the opposition stole all three points late in the contest.

Fabregas on the board Cesc Fabregas has netted his first goal for Monaco to give the strugglers a first French Ligue 1 win in seven games as they beat visitors Toulouse 2-1 yesterday. The Spanish midfielder, who joined from Chelsea last month, fired home the winner on 62 minutes as Monaco claimed a maiden home victory this campaign and lifted them one spot to 18th.

Windies crush England Jason Holder has dedicated the West Indies’ emphatic 10-wicket test victory over England to bereaved bowler Alzarri Joseph, who played on despite the death of his mother hours before the day’s play began.

Joseph, 22, was still coming to terms with his devastating loss as he warmed up with tears in his eyes on the third morning at his home ground in Antigua. The Windies offered him the chance to remain with family but the paceman decided to take the field, first batting and then claiming the wickets of Joe Root and Joe Denly in a performance of considerable courage. The brilliant win established an unassailable 2-0 series advantage.

Derby win for Sixers Daniel Hughes and James Vince have piloted the Sydney Sixers to a nine-wicket rain-affected win over a meek Sydney Thunder and into the Big Bash League finals.

The Thunder made a meagre 6-128 but the Sixers’ target was reduced to 84 runs from 12 overs after two rain delays at the SCG. Hughes – fresh from a superb unbeaten half-century against Adelaide – made 41no and Vince (43no) gently guided their side to victory. - AAP

Starc answers critics

The men’s gross title for the weekend went to Josh Smith with a total of 142, while the ladies gross was won by Catherine Bell with 146. Terry Kingsbury celebrated his birthday by producing the best senior nett with 141, while the men’s junior nett prize went to David Fisher with 137. The ladies nett prize was won by Daphne Hinton with 143. There was another big weekend of golf coming up at the Ashburton Golf Club this month, too, with the annual Harvey Norman Classic two-day sponsored tournament set to run over the weekend of February 23 and 24.

Australia’s top order has crumbled for a second time but the hosts still have a 386-run lead over Sri Lanka after Mitchell Starc answered his critics with a five-wicket haul in the second test. Under fire for his wayward summer, Starc helped roll Sri Lanka for just 215 with his best bowling of the summer before Tim Paine opted not to enforce the follow on and Australia went to tea at 3-67 on day three. Joe Burns (nine), Marcus Harris (14), and Marnus Labuschagne (four) are the men out. Yesterday’s top-order collapse came after a dramatic morning in which Kusal Perera was twice struck by Jhye Richardson on the helmet and became the second Sri Lankan to retire hurt in the innings.

Cup challenge ‘huge experience’

With every minute that ticked by yesterday, Mid Canterbury’s chances of bringing the Hawke Cup home from Invercargill with them got slimmer and slimmer.

By the end of the day, Southland had batted their way to a safe draw which meant that they’d keep the historical cricket trophy in their grasp for at least another week.

While it wasn’t the result Mid Canterbury had hoped for when they flew south for the three-day match at Queens Park, Mid Canterbury Cricket coach Garfield Charles said he was proud of the way his side never gave up.

The pin was finally pulled just after tea yesterday afternoon.

Southland were well in control with a lead that, given the time left to play, Mid Canterbury stood no chance of knocking off.

It was the story of the match for Mid Canterbury – they were always chasing.

Charles said had Mid Canterbury won the toss, they’d have batted.

But Southland won the toss and sent the challengers into the field and that was where Mid Canterbury spent the entire first day, as Southland made their way through to 317/9.

On day two Southland picked up where they left off, with a 117-run last wicket stand helping them through to 382, with Alex Hooper ending up the best of Mid Canterbury’s bowlers with 3/77.

“Our hope was to be able to bat first and post a good total and try and bowl them out, but that sort of got twisted from the start because we lost the toss and ended up bowling first,” Charles said.

“We bowled really well all day

long, but that 10th wicket stand probably broke our backs and took the game away from us.”

Mid Canterbury were well up for the challenge when it came to their turn to bat, but they found the going tough, with their top three batsmen only making a total of 14 runs between them.

Aside from a knock of 73 from one of the side’s youngsters, Archie Redfern, and a 40 from James Southby, there wasn’t much else to write home about.

Mid Canterbury were eventually dismissed for 166 and found themselves in a position they’d hoped they wouldn’t be in, trailing by 216.

“Our performance in that game was always going to be decided by how well we batted, and we weren’t good enough with the bat,” Charles said.

other bat and in the five overs left in the day Mid Canterbury made a breakthrough, with Southland 1/11 at stumps on day two.

Mid Canterbury headed into day three knowing they needed to knock Southland over quickly and give themselves a target to chase, but again, Southland had other ideas. They just needed to play safe because they didn’t need to win to retain the cup.

By lunch yesterday, Southland were 167/3 and even if Mid Canterbury were to pick up a quick seven wickets – like they did when Richard Turpie produced a memorable spell of 8/13 against Otago Country earlier this month, turning the game on its head and helping Mid Canterbury to an outright win – it was going to take some spectacular batting to chase down whatever the total would have been.

The pin was pulled with Southland 275/5, after the dismissal of James Ng who top-scored for Southland with 119.

Mid Canterbury won the Hawke Cup in the 2003/04 season, but its record in the competition since hadn’t been a good one.

Just to win your zone and get a challenge was huge and Mid Canterbury’s players had taken a lot from the experience, Charles said.

“Just to be here right now is a huge achievement, coming from where we were before, so the boys should be proud.”

Southland would now put the Hawke Cup on the line against zone three winners Nelson, who sealed their place at the top of that zone with a first innings win over Marlborough in Blenheim yesterday.

That challenge will get under way on February 13.

Hart fears for rugby Former All Blacks coach John Hart has blasted the proposed new test format and also expressed major fears for the state of New Zealand rugby. Hart said the annual global test concept would dilute the World Cup and fail because it would be too uneven. “My fear for New Zealand rugby is not the All Blacks,” said Hart, the NZR appointee on the new Blues board.

“It’s the bottom end of the game where I see clubs struggling and schoolboys stopping playing the game.”

Reality check for Ireland

By Foster Niumata England is back and its reputation restored after upending Ireland 32-20 in the defending Six Nations champion’s Lansdowne Road stronghold yesterday.

Following its worst championship finish in 31 years, England opened this campaign an eightpoint underdog to the mighty Irish, but subdued the home side with aggressive defence and stealthy tries to win in Dublin for the first time in six years.

Ireland was unbeaten in 14 home matches in the Six Nations since 2013, and, overall, on a national-record 12 successive home wins since 2016, including a first home defeat of New Zealand only three months ago, after which they were regarded as the world’s best rugby team.

But New Zealand, and England coach Eddie Jones again in the buildup, warned Ireland it was harder being the hunted than the hunter.

As the hunter, England was ruthless.

It hadn’t scored a try in Dublin in eight years, and bagged one after just 94 seconds.

Ireland settled down, but England finished the first half stronger and continued to stress Ireland to the point where it earned a bonus-point four tries.

Ireland was limited to two tries, one at the death when England was already celebrating in a stadium quickly draining of Irish fans.

In a game of only four line breaks – two each – England’s line speed was the more impressive and consistent.

The Irish were given no room or time to breathe, and couldn’t even count on free errors by England, who conceded just eight penalties.

“The intensity at which we played pleased me most,” Jones said.

He added, “We’re nowhere near our best. We’re looking forward to playing better than that – and we will.”

Green jerseys were scythed down and Irish playmaker Jonathan Sexton, world rugby’s best player in 2018, was reduced to shaking his head and conceding England’s fourth try.

Meanwhile, England forwards Billy and Mako Vunipola, playing a test for the first time since June, and Manu Tuilagi, making his first Six Nations start in six years, battered the Irish line, softening it up so the tries were shared by backs Henry Slade, Jonny May and Elliot Daly.

Prop Mako Vunipola led England’s personal tackle count with 25, followed by flanker Mark Wilson with 21.

Slade led the backs with 11 as England thwarted Ireland attempts at momentum with 14 turnovers.

“That is a reality check about the physicality that will be required to be successful in this World Cup year,” Ireland coach Joe Schmidt said.

England’s defence has been transformed since former New Zealand coach John Mitchell took charge in September.

A Sexton penalty helped to settle Ireland, but they couldn’t take advantage of an extra man after England flanker Tom Curry was sin-binned for a late tackle on Keith Earls.

The English could have had a third try on halftime, but Billy Vunipola’s was disallowed for a double movement and Farrell accepted a penalty kick to send England into the break 17-10 ahead.

Sexton closed the gap to four points, but the confrontation was counting bodies.

England forwards Maro Itoje and Kyle Sinckler limped off, and Ireland replaced tired props Healy and Tadhg Furlong in the third quarter.

England pounced again from a scrum on halfway, as Slade gave May an overlap and indicated to the wing to kick ahead. Slade then won the race to the bouncing ball and England was clear at 22-13 with 14 minutes to go.

When Ireland center Garry Ringrose was cut down by England replacement Courtney Lawes and turned over by Curry, Farrell nailed the penalty kick from 47 metres, the limit of his range.

Ringrose was replaced, and Irish desperation saw them try to run out of their 22, only for Sexton to pass straight to Slade for his second try and England’s incredible fourth.

England welcomes France to Twickenham next weekend, while Ireland has to try and regroup in Scotland.

Spurs beat Pelicans, bats LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points and 14 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs withstood another bat intrusion – with a nifty play from the team’s coyote mascot – and held off the depleted New Orleans Pelicans 113-108 yesterday.

The Spurs led for all but the opening basket in successfully sweeping a four-game homestand, but it didn’t come with some drama. The bat began hovering above the court three minutes into the game, causing officials to delay play. It was the second straight home game delayed by the winged intruders, with three bats buzzing the court Thursday night against Brooklyn. Arena workers were able to shoo the bats into the rafters against the Nets, but the Spurs were better prepared against the Pelicans.

Win for the teal pants The second annual teal pants campaign got under way on Friday and two ladies chalked up wins to kickstart the six-week fundraising effort.

Sheree Tomlinson, at Otaki to drive Michael House’s sizeable team, opened the account with an easy win behind the maidener, Xmas Bay. A couple of hours later, Sarah O’Reilly got the chocolates with the consistent Doctor Tom in a junior drivers’ event at Addington.

Each win put $400 in the kitty courtesy of donation agreements from Harness Racing New Zealand, Woodlands Stud and the clubs holding the meetings.

There is also a starting fund of $2500 thanks to generous donations from the Otago Awards Committee and Stuart and Marg Valentine.

O’Reilly was thrilled to help the cause, and to win her second race in a row on Doctor Tim, who is trained by Geoff Dunn.

“It was really good to win; it’s a great cause and I’m proud to be a part of it.

“He’s really nice to drive and he always gives his best in every race.

“He tries his hardest and not every horse does that.”

Doctor Tim surged in to a gap at the 200-metre mark and burned past his opponents for a comprehensive victory.

“I had to be really patient, but when you save him up for one run, he really explodes.”

O’Reilly was on her way to Orari on Saturday morning, with her father, fellow driver Gerard, who

Fans flock to Tactix From P24 When the sides returned to the court for the second half of yesterday’s match, Watson moved to goal keep and Lloyd took to the court at goal defence.

Mid-way through the quarter, as the Steel started to pull away, the pair switched as Delaney-Hoshek rung a number of changes to try and stem the flow.

But by three-quarter time the Steel held a 44-38 lead and the Tactix had a job on their hands if they were to come back and win it.

They pounced on any loose ball and continued to improve, but the Steel ended up being just too slick, winning 58-53.

It wasn’t the result the Tactix were after, but the home fans weren’t too bothered, they were just happy to have had the opportunity to see their team in their town.

Mainland Netball CEO Brigit Hearn said it was the first time they’d brought the Tactix to Ashburton, but it wouldn’t be the last.

Any future visits were most likely to be more pre-season type fixtures, due to added challenges and requirements when it came to actual ANZ Premiership competi-

tion games, but Hearn said she wasn’t totally ruling out the possibility of the ANZ Premiership coming to town one day.

“It’s a really strong netball community here and I would have to say that bringing games here is an absolute pleasure,” Hearn said.

She said Mid Canterbury Netball and the EA Networks Centre staff were great to deal with, and fans came out in force when Mainland Netball brought games to Ashburton.

Last year the Mainland Beko side played two of their home games in Ashburton, although this season they did not have any.

The two netballing regions’ Beko Netball League sides were also in action at the weekend, playing in a double header of their own after the ANZ Premiership team.

Saturday’s game went the way of the Mainland side coached by Ashburton’s own Ronelle van Dongen and Andrea Cousins.

On Saturday it was the Mainland side that came out on top, and on Sunday they were again too good, winning 70-41.

Mainland Netball is promising to bring the Tactix back to Ashburton again, after the town’s netball fans turned out in huge numbers for a pre-season double header at the EA Networks Centre at the weekend.

The Tactix and the defending ANZ Premiership champion Southern Steel side both spent the weekend in Ashburton, playing each other on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, followed by

another double-header between the two regions’ Beko Netball League sides.

More than 700 people were in the stands watching on as the Steel picked up a six-goal win in Saturday’s match, and the Southerners again started strong in front of a slightly smaller crowd in the second match yesterday morning, eventually winning by five goals, 58-53.

With Silver Ferns Te Paea Selby-Rickit starting at goal attack and Shannon Saunders (Francois)

at centre, and Gina Crampton captaining the side from wing attack, the Steel were heavy on experience and it showed with their speed and finesse through the court as the Tactix attempted to even the ledger in Sunday’s game.

By the end of the first quarter the Steel had moved out to a commanding 17-11 lead against a Tactix side that was full of young, fresh faces this season, but the home team put in a much stronger showing in the second quarter to trail by just three at half time.

Among the fresh new faces in this year’s Tactix side is Ashburton’s own Kate Lloyd, a defender returning to the Tactix this year after a season with the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Magic.

She didn’t start in yesterday’s match, but with the start of the ANZ Premiership just two weeks away, coach Marianne Delaney-Hoshek used the weekend’s games as an opportunity to give everyone a run and try out different combinations.

With the Magic, Lloyd played

alongside one of New Zealand’s best defenders in recent years, Casey Kopua, and this year she’d again be part of a defensive line up with no shortage of talent.

Current Silver Fern Temalisi Fakahakotou was on the bench due to injury at the weekend, but another Silver Fern – Jane Watson – was an influential part of the side, starting yesterday’s match at goal defence.
