It might come with a $53 million price tag, but most people who have lodged a submission on the Ashburton District’s new library and civic centre project have chosen the top shelf option. The Ashburton District Council plans to build the complex in Baring Square east and last year consulted the community on site options for the project. With the site ticked off it has now prepared four build options ranging from a pared back $39 million complex that would see a new civic centre but retain
and strengthen the old library on Havelock Street, through to the $53 million package that would create a state of the art modern library and a civic centre that would be built for the future. The council’s first choice option is a $45 million build that has a smaller library with fewer facilities than the $53 million option. Public meetings have been held and the council is in the process of holding open days where site plans can be viewed and councillors are available to discuss options and ideas. will be accepted until April 14. Yesterday 43 had been lodged and the majority, 21 submitters wanted option two, the $53 million build. They wanted the council to build for the future, to do it once and to get it right. Some said not going for the best possible option today would be short changing the community for the future.
