Hinds brigade chief Dave Kingsbury (right) and deputy chief Roger Sparks are angry at “blatant ignorance” preventing the removal of a blue gum tree and the building of an ideally-situated fire station.

A large blue gum and “blatant ignorance” stand between the Hinds Volunteer Fire Brigade and its new fire station Hinds fire brigade members had what they believed was the ideal site for a new fire station, but the tree is in the way and the Ashburton District Council is not allowing it to be cut down. The council can not understand why the brigade can not just shift the site of their planned station another 10 metres to the west, while the brigade can not understand why the council wants to save a tree which has no special status and is not even a na-

tive. Chief Dave Kingsbury said he had come up against many brick walls as he had tried to get the council to see common sense. “To me it’s blatant ignorance on behalf of the council,” he said. It will cost further ratepayer money, a few thousand dollars, to get the alternative site surveyed, and it would be a site which would not be as good as the favoured site. The proposed building sites are on Hinds Domain land, vested in the council and managed by the Hinds Reserve Board. Mr Kingsbury said the favoured site was chosen as it was a logical place to put the new station – there was a well on the land so it could not be used as

a permanent playing field, the station would fit compactly there, and there were houses straight across the road which offered a security aspect. The alternative site would see a power pole inconveniently located in front of the truck bay, and building there would itself necessitate the removal of one of several established evergreen trees. “Ten metres doesn’t sound far but it’s the principle of it and the cost to the ratepayers, and it creates more issues than it solves,” Mr Kingsbury said.
