Ashburton Golf Club Everything is now getting back to normal, after the wonderful Harvey Norman classic that we held recently. A wonderful weekend was had by everyone who took part. Massive thanks must go to our major naming sponsors, Nick and the crew at Harvey Norman did us proud again, and long may our association continue. Also many, many thanks to all our other very generous sponsors, and to all the staff and volunteers who make sure this tournament just keeps on growing. The games just keep coming thick and fast, this Saturday we have a mixed teams stableford, everybody welcome to come along and join in. That goes for Sunday too, we have another mixed day incorporating the White trophy round 2 and plate. Even if you are not in the White trophy, come on down any way, we will a still find you a game. Then next Saturday we have round 1 of club champs qualifying, the new look champs this year, with 5 qualifying rounds across the season, best 2 scores counting, then the knockout rounds start in the Spring.
Ashburton Ladies Probus The monthly meeting held at RSA Doris Lounge on February 24 was attended by 40 ladies with 11 apologies. The President Margaret Taylor welcomed everyone and congratulations were extended to Sheila Hare and Fairlie Matsinger on their 80th Birthdays, also M Cross had a wedding anniversary. The almoner visited Peggy Ross at Rosebank and M. Beckham who had had a fall. Members were reminded the next month was AGM and nominations were invited for two committee members as Heather Murdoch and Roberta Hampton were retiring. The raffle was won by S. McLachlan and H. Hawksby. The Mini speaker, Janet Olds gave a good description of her life as a housewife, mother and nurse. After coffee break our visiting speaker, Coby Snowden gave a brief description of her life after leaving Holland 38 years ago. After having several accountancy jobs in Wellington as a single parent she moved to Ashburton where she took up Target Shooting, met and married John Snowden who won gold at World Champs. After marrying John she had a further 2 girls and shoots herself for NZ Ladies Team and is Treasurer for many clubs. Thanks were made by Gwen Hansen and

Ashburton Woodworkers Bryan Ching welcomed 25 members to the first meeting of 2016. A special welcome to Noel Graham, from Christchurch, our guest speaker and demonstrator. A mention was made of the visit from the Timaru Woodworking club who visited a reciprocating saw mill, the Lynn Historical Woodworking Museum then onto the Ashburton Woodworking clubrooms for a look and supper. Bryan asked members for any thoughts for future activities. Show and Tell: an outstanding carved and decorated bowl. David Ford a well-made complex chess set and a small lignum vitae bowl. Dave Busby an elm bowl. Geoff Brown two lime bowls with ornamental bands. Ken Neal a well-constructed, ornament item made from custom wood. George Spencer a mallet. Peter Ireland elm bowl with three carved feet for stability. Brian Marsden a photo of a burr bowl he recently made and gave away. Merv Peck a ribbon wood platter a paulownia bowl, and another smart bowl of unknown timber. Frank Luxton a small bowl and a precise triangular object known as, streptohedron, these are difficult to create as you need to be very accurate so that the two halves are the same, no matter how you rotate the individual pieces. Wim Melchers two large thinly shaped bowls in a white wood and a vase. Given that the woodworkers have new club room facilities and that members needed to be updated with the Health and Safety regulations, tutor Noel Graham explained that what we do, wear, in our own workshop and can get away with is no longer acceptable, more so in clubrooms. Noel covered subjects such as facemasks, safety glasses and shields, solid footwear, protect yourself from breathing in dust, tie back long hair, whether male or female, chainsaw safety, and the dangers inherent in using solvents, oils therefore the use of gloves. He concluded “to be sensible and stay safe.” Thanks Noel for the reminders of safety.
Many deals do not have game points for either partnership and the challenge is to find the best possible contract. This hand is a classic example of the situation. South, the dealer, will pass, as will West, leaving North, playing 5 card majors to open 1 Spade. East passes and South, with 9 points, will respond 1 N.T. With 2 doubletons in hand, many Norths will now show the 4 card Heart suit, bidding 2 Hearts, giving South the choice between the two majors. Now South has a dilemma – he has little support for either. Should he bid 2 NT, or simply put North back to 2 spades? As it happens, this is the best option. What will East lead? Possibly the Diamond A followed by the 6 looking to get a ruff. North’s problem is to avoid losing 2 trump tricks, and to do this he must play the Spade 9 after taking the Diamond K in hand, East will cover with the 10 and the A from dummy holds the trick. Now the Spade 2, which goes to West’s K. West will now play another Diamond hoping to give East a ruff, but North must ruff high with the Spade Q or J, East discarding a Club. Now Declarer must play his remaining Spade honour taking the last trump from each defender. He now plays to the Heart Q and back to the A&K in hand. Still 2 Clubs and a Heart to lose giving a total of 8 tricks, making the 2 Spade contract. Should East have mistakenly discarded a Heart on the 3rd round of Diamonds, a very happy Declarer would make 9 tricks!
