Coffee habit harming our world

Keeping disposable coffee cups out of landfill is coming down to a battle between expense and expediency, an Ashburton recycling expert says. But with thousands of wax-surfaced cups making their way into refuse bags and rubbish bins each day around the Ashburton District, the time is coming when cafes and customers are going to have to bite the bullet on cost and make the change to compostable cups, Ashburton District Council waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin says. Compostable cups are available in New Zealand, but because they come with a higher price tag, most cafes are reluctant to use them, he said. “To drive the change it needs more public awareness. The demand will come from the public, if they’re calling for them it will happen, it’s like all recycling it starts from the grass roots.” An experiment by sports stadium owners in the

United States was proof that change could happen, Mr Goodwin said. “They got together and did a huge push towards being as waste free as they could and they’ve made big inroads into using compostable coffee cups and containers. This change is sweeping the world and in New Zealand we need to catch up.” Some local authorities were monitoring the quantity of coffee cups going into landfills, but this had not been done in Ashburton, he said. While it would require a significant mind shift for cafes, Mr Goodwin believes any that were prepared to make a commitment to being as waste free as possible would have a good point of difference that would appeal to many customers. One Dunedin café has already put a stake in the ground and refused to use disposable cups, telling its customers take-out coffee would only be available in customer-owned “keep cups”. That’s an approach Ashburton’s café managers are not keen to follow. Takeaway coffee makes up more than half of the Somerset Grocer’s trade, manager Nicky Milmine said, and while staff encourage customers to use keep cups, most prefer to stick with disposable cups, she said. “I’ve certainly looked at the compostable cups. They’re out there, but they’re just so much more expensive,” she said. While she’s never run the numbers, Mrs Milmine estimates more than 1500 disposable cups leave her café every week.
