MSD charged over Winz shootings A charge has been filed against the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) following the Winz shootings in Ashburton last year. WorkSafe NZ confirmed yesterday one charge had been laid against MSD over the incident in September, during which two Winz staff were killed and one was seriously injured. The charge alleges that the Ministry of Social Development failed to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of its employees while at work. According to a WorkSafe media release yesterday, the charge, which was laid in the Wellington District Court, follows the conclusion of a WorkSafe investigation that began shortly after the incident.

STORY

Ministry of Social Development chief executive Brendan Boyle said in a statement yesterday that he had been advised that WorkSafe had lodged a charge against the ministry under Section 6 of the Health and Safety Act. “Once we know the full details of the charge, we will fully consider our position,” he said. Mr Boyle said no further comment would be made as the matter is before the courts. Following the shootings last year, the ministry commissioned an independent review into its physical security environment. That review, led by former Police Commissioner Rob Robinson and Murray Jack of Deloitte New Zealand,

found the ministry had taken all practicable steps to ensure the safety of its employees. The Public Service Association (PSA) said WorkSafe’s announcement showed the importance that must be placed on health and safety in the workplace. The trial of alleged Winz shooter Russell John Tully, 48, is expected to start on May 11. Tully has been charged with murdering Ashburton Work and Income frontcounter workers Peggy Noble, 67, and Susan Cleveland, 55, on September 1 last year. He is also accused of attempting to murder two other Winz staff members – Lindy Louise Curtis, 43, and Kim Elizabeth Adams. Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
