Ashburton grandmother Edith Smith was puzzled when her husband Peter handed her an official looking envelope from Government House. The letter, which had come in the mail, prompted her to ask “What is all this about?” “She did open it, and was pretty surprised,” Peter recalls. What the 72-year-old retired midwife found inside was correspondence informing her she was to be awarded a Queen’s Service Medal (QSM), in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours, for services to conservation. “She thought it wasn’t justified,” Peter said of Edith’s initial reaction. Peter himself had suspected what the letter was all about, as he had helped provide information to those nominat-
ing her for the medal. And when she opened it and digested its contents, he found himself disagreeing with his wife of many years. “I think it was more than justified, really, when I know all the time that she spends on these things. I was thrilled for her,” he said. Edith is chairwoman of Forest and Bird Ashburton, but her service has extended far beyond that role alone. A true champion of the environment, her dedication has stretched from the hills to the sea, and from classrooms to council chambers. Currently Edith is travelling overseas and is unable to be contacted. But prior to leaving she wrote a summary of her service for the media, commenting she felt “very honoured” to receive the medal. “Over the years I have met many
like-minded people, and made many friends when attending conservation activities,” she said. “And it has been very gratifying to share their enthusiasm, enjoyment and appreciation for the native vegetation and landscapes of the Ashburton District and beyond.” Edith’s love of nature began as a child when she grew up on a dairy farm at Fernside in North Canterbury. She spent many hours playing outdoors and swimming in the local rivers. She also became familiar with Canterbury’s unique flora and fauna, as her family travelled the region when time permitted between milkings.
