It’s a scorcher Temperatures rose to around 33 degrees in the Ashburton District yesterday and many sought relief from the heat in the waters of Lake Hood and in local swimming pools.

Groundwater wells in the Pendarves/ Chertsey area continue to fall to record lows as the big dry continues with some farmers needing substantial rainfall before Christmas to avoid running short. However, MetService meteorologist Georgina Griffiths said latest forecasting showed Mid Canterbury would suffer another dry month during December with no substantial rainfall predicted. “You will almost certainly get something from the sky but it won’t be much … MetService is forecasting below normal December rainfall for Ashburton (and all of Canterbury).” December will start warmly, notably so for the South Island, according to MetService. However, the second week turns

unusually cold for the time of the year right across New Zealand with temperatures for the second half of the month likely to continue a touch cooler over the southern South Island, but return to near average for the rest of the country. Latest ECan data from the middle of November shows that wells in the Pendarves and Chertsey area and some in Seafield are continuing to drop to record lows. Pendarves sharemilker Will Grayling said his well levels had dropped but it was “not panic stations yet” – although he was well ahead of where he would be normally in terms of their seasonal allocation of water. “If it starts raining at Christmas, it will be fine. You wouldn’t normally worry about seasonal allocations now but this

morning I was looking up which wells have what allocations. It’s just so early … it’s a long way to the end of the season if we don’t get any rain and some people are concerned about it.” Seafield dairy farmer Tim Lovett said while his wells had dropped in pressure, it was not that different to other seasons, but if the dry continued “there could be a problem at the other end”. ECan director of resource planning and consents Don Rule again warned landowners to check their consent conditions and to ensure they used their water wisely.
