Methamphetamine users could be your next door neighbour or the person sitting next to you at work; says an Ashburton drug service manager. Chris Clark, manager of Ashburton’s Community Drug and Alcohol Service (Acads) said that while people might have a picture of a meth addict who had hit rock bottom and lived on the streets, the reality was very different. “It’s not always like that. People can be users and not look like that. It could be anyone - it could be professionals, it’s not just one section of the community,” she said. While Acads does not have a large client base of meth users, Clark said

it came as no surprise to her that the substance made up 78 per cent of the trace drug residue found in Ashburton’s wastewater supply. Those figures were part of the latest national release of wastewater drug testing data for New Zealand, with meth consistently emerging as number one in terms of drug residue detected. Ashburton’s recording was the fourth highest percentage found in the South Island. People with alcohol related problems made up the bulk of Acads clients, however, the number of people wanting help with meth addiction had been increasing for about five years, she said. “But we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg, the people who want help. deal with addiction from a health point of view, we help them to help themselves.” Like any addictive substance, users generally moved in a circle where the product was available and that meant kicking a drug habit could also mean having to break old associations and old habits, Clark said. Ashburton’s wastewater system has been part of a national testing programme for illegal drugs since late 2018 when the testing regime was rolled out across 38 sites in 12 policing districts.
