VAPING Not in our smokefree areas, says council

By Sue Newman

Vaping will soon be banned in all smokefree areas of the Ashburton District. In a surprise move yesterday, Ashburton’s district councillors decided to amend the district’s smokefree policy to include a ban on vaping. And that will

mean all outdoor dining areas, playgrounds, sportsfields, parks and council owned facilities and council run events will, from August 15 be smoke- and vape-free. The deal on the table at a policy and bylaws committee meeting was to accept the current smokefree policy unchanged with the intention to make changes sched-

uled for 2022. As written, the policy stated that vaping would continue to be allowed in smokefree areas. Russell Ellis didn’t agree. “I’d be really disappointed if I sat at an outdoor dining area and the person next to me was vaping, that’s just concerning,” he said. Vaping had been banned by the

odd council already, senior policy advisor Richard Mabon said. However, based on advice from the health sector where vaping was seen as an acceptable alternative to smoking, he recommended Ashburton did not ban vaping in its smokefree legislation. “The context we’re talking

about is tobacco. Vaping has raised the spectre of what else it could be and possible cannabis reform could raise this spectre even further,” he said.
