Farm stays that offer guests a unique rural Kiwi experience could become the Ashburton District’s signature, year round attraction, says tourism leader Bruce Moffat. The Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive is fresh back from an in-bound tour operators’ trade show and said there was strong interest in the increasing options the district was offering for tourists wanting farm stays. Those options now range from unique back country experiences through paddock to plate tours to farm stays where guests could get a feel for rural life. “We’re getting really great feedback. The big one at the trade show was Erewhon Station. It’s an absolutely unique

experience. Everyone I showed the imagery too said ‘wow, we have to do this’.” One of the district’s key selling points is that while activities on offer such as hot air ballooning and jet boat rides were also available in tourism hot spots such as Queenstown, they were much more affordable in the Ashburton District, Moffat said. “What we have here is every bit as good and it’s a hell of a lot more expensive down there. We’re going out to operators and consumers and saying we’re better value.” The farm and homestay operators who were doing well were those who were offering something unique, who added value to a guest’s stay, he said. dens or historic buildings or the opportunity to be part of normal farm life. A one-off opportunity would come later this year with the Lions rugby tour and the three-day gap in June between a match against the Crusaders in Christchurch and the Highlanders in Dunedin. He’s secured a full page slot in a New Zealand – UK magazine that promotes the district, targeting free, independent travellers. “We talk about the scenic route, we’re saying make your Lions tour a back roads tour and we’ve given them key things to do in Mid Canterbury.” It was difficult to predict how much the district would benefit from those travellers, but it was important to put the options and opportunities out there, he said.
