As the district sweltered, four-legged friends took to the fountain to gain a little respite from the heat.
Mid Canterbury sizzles BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Every man and their dog have been looking for ways to beat the heat as the mercury climbed across the district this week. Varied sources suggested temperatures anywhere from 31 degrees to 37 degrees, with the only thing people able to agree on was it being too hot. According to the MetService, the highest temperature reached
yesterday was 32 degrees, while Graham’s weather station recorded a high of 32.7 at 2.55pm. Temperatures built throughout the week, with highs of 26 and 27 earlier in the week according to the MetService. The heatwave is expected to break today, beginning with warm with gusty northerlies followed by a change in the afternoon, bringing strong or gale force southerlies and rain, with a predicted
high of 28 and a low of 9. Saturday is set to bring morning cloud followed by fine weather and a northeast wind developing in the afternoon, with a high of 20. Sunday is set to follow a similar pattern, with only light winds and a high of 22. Around the rest of the South Island yesterday, a barefoot dash to the dairy was well out of the question as the temperature of some
road surfaces reached 62 degrees Celsius. “It’s over 62°C on the tarmac inland from Blenheim. Bare feet NOT recommended,’’ the MetService said. On the MetService’s temperature graph on its website – which offers real-time conditions with the help of the public – Mt Isobel Place, in Hanmer Springs, recorded 36.2°C at 3.30pm. Ngawi, on the south coast of Wairarapa, led the temperatures
for the North Island with 30.6°C. The main northern centres were slightly cooler, with Auckland at 26.1°C, Wellington at 25.8°C, Hamilton at 27.3°C, Tauranga at 23.2°C, Gisborne at 26.4°C and Napier at 26°C. Forecasters predicted that yesterday would be the peak of the heatwave, and temperatures could reach 37°C in parts of North Canterbury, with many more spots tipped to top 30°C.
