Violence on the rise in schools

Primary school leaders are experiencing far more violence than people in other professions and Mid Canterbury principals are no exception.

A health and wellbeing survey carried out by the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) Te Riu Roa has revealed that school leaders experience physical violence at 10 times the rate of the general population and threats of violence at nearly five times.

In 2017 41 per cent of principals, deputies and their assistants experienced physical violence and 38 per cent were subjected to threats in 2017.

Both rates had increased from about 28 per cent in 2016.

Those doing the bullying were other adults 96 per cent of time, most often parents, but also colleagues, managers or subordinates.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Tim Kuipers said he thought violence was definitely present within Mid Canterbury schools.

He could not speak on behalf of other schools about the NZEI findings, as he had not directly spoken with them about the report, but said most local principals would have more than one story to tell about violent incidents.

“I don’t think it happens every day, but it is frequent enough to be a concern.

The majority of parents and families in Mid Canterbury are good, but one or two can cause issues,” he said.

“I’d say at any [local] school it’s happening far more often than once a year.”

NZEI Te Riu Roa had proposed a number of recommendations, including that resourcing and staffing be increased to support the growing number of students with challenging behaviours.

It also called for school boards to uphold safe environments in schools, a mediation service for families and schools, regular teacher training in responding to violent situations, increased mentoring and counselling, and more thorough investigations of violent incidents and bullying.

Business mood ‘cautious’ in Mid Canty

Confusion, which had resulted in a reduction of nationwide orders on dairy and effluent products, had since cleared up around the issue.

“Agriculture business confidence I would suggest isn’t low, I would suggest it’s confident and bubbling along nicely,” Pluck said.

There were not many minimum wage employers in his line of work, and fuel tax increases to date had also not had a huge impact.

Dropping business confidence nationwide is being reflected in some Mid Canterbury operations, although others are more optimistic.

The latest monthly ANZ Business Outlook shows confidence plummeting to its lowest levels since the global financial crisis.

Business Mid Canterbury chairwoman Desme Daniels said in Mid Canterbury business confidence was “cautious”.

“The recent M. bovis outbreak has affected the dairy industry and as a result the flow down effect into many other Mid Cantabrian businesses has led to some reduction in spending and a cautious approach to the next six months,” Daniels said.

“Coupled with the changes to the minimum wage and also fuel taxes, the small to medium local businesses have had additional unbudgeted costs hit their bottom line, with many not having a counter balance of increased revenue.”

Her comments echoed those of local MP Amy Adams, who put out a statement on Monday following the release of OECD data revealing New Zealand had the second lowest level of business confidence in the developed world.

Family violence survivor Matt Brown will address the inaugural White Ribbon Inspirational Breakfast to be held in Ashburton this month.

The father of three has a big social media following through his My Fathers Barber business in Christchurch, which he says is not only a job, but also a calling.

In an interactive documentary series, Brown said by styling men’s and boy’s hair he provides a place for connection and sharing stories.

He grew up in a household marred by domestic violence and alcoholism. His parents both came from broken backgrounds and because they had never dealt with their pain, transferred this on to their children.

“By the age of 10 we had pretty much lived at every Women’s Refuge home in Christchurch

and Auckland.”

Safer Ashburton family violence co-ordinator Anna Arrowsmith said she was looking forward to hosting Brown at the inaugural breakfast.

While he had come to a stage of acceptance and forgiveness, his story also very much highlighted the part family members, friends and aquaintances could play in stopping domestic violence.

Tickets were $30 and available from Safer Ashburton at 308-1395.

The breakfast is on August 27 at 9am at Hotel Ashburton and is the first event to be held by Safer Ashburton in the lead-up to White Ribbon Day on November 25. Other events included the popular quiz night on November 23 and a family fun day on White Ribbon Day itself.

Firemen’s hot, heavy challenge

Its dark and cold as two Ashburton volunteer firefighters stride it out down the footpaths of Ashburton.

It’s an odd sight. There’s no fire appliance in sight, just the two firemen in full firefighting gear – helmets on their heads and cylinders on their backs – heading out on a two-hour stroll around the streets of Ashburton.

It’s part of Nathan Speedy and Sean McCormack’s preparation for a huge challenge they’ve taken on – completing the South Island Half Marathon at Lake Hood this weekend in full firefighting kit.

The pair only decided to enter a couple of weeks ago after Speedy saw an email from firefighters from another brigade who were planning on doing the event as preparation for a charity climb, asking if anyone else wanted to join in.

Neither McCormack or Speedy have ever done a half marathon before, but they decided to join in the fun and give it a go.

They’re not doing it for any reason in particular; they’re not raising money for anything. For them, it’s simply a personal challenge.

Both Speedy, a storeman at Ashburton New World, and McCormack, an apprentice upholsterer, are fit. They run and go to the gym regularly, but both admit they’re not big walkers.

“My theory is I can run 10km, so I can walk 21km,” Speedy said.

They’ve never done an event like it before, in fact they both reckon it’s probably the first race they’ve been in since they did their last school cross country. So they don’t really know what to expect, or how they’ll go, but on their first training walk last week they covered about 10km in two hours so going on easy maths, they’re thinking the

While the majority of the field will no doubt be in running shorts, leggings, t-shirts, shirts and other typical running and walking attire, McCormack and Speedy will walk in their heavy, hot firefighting gear, including cylinders on their backs and helmets on their heads, although they will bypass the tra-

ditional firefighting gumboots for proper running shoes. All up, it’s around 20-25kg of additional weight, Speedy said.

“It sounds like a whole lot but when you’ve got it on you don’t notice it that much,” Speedy said.

He might be singing a different tune as the duo head into the last kilometre come Sunday though.

“We’re hoping it’s going to be a cool day,” Speedy said.

They got the odd funny look

while on their first training walk last week.

“We had one guy ask us where the fire was, and we had other people stop and talk to us,” Speedy said.

“We did have one person just randomly ask for directions and ask us if he could park in a car park.”

While completing their first half marathon is a personal challenge, for both it’s also a chance to

raise the profile of the fire brigade they’re among the newest members of. McCormack only completed his recruits course two months ago, while Speedy has been a firefighter with the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade for about 18 months, and they both love it.

The South Island Half Marathon at Lake Hood is on Sunday and includes a 21km half marathon, a 7km event and a 1.5km kids’ event, for both runners and walkers.

Snow predicted for high areas

Mt Hutt Ski Area management are anticipating a significant snowfall later in the week.

While viewing two long-range forecasts yesterday, manager James McKenzie said it appeared that snow would begin tomorrow night and continue into Friday.

One forecast showed 20 centimetres on Friday following 15cm tomorrow and another showed 40cm on Friday following 30cm tomorrow.

“There’s a reasonable degree of convergence on the forecasts at the moment showing some snow at the end of the week,” McKenzie said.

Any new snow will be appreciated by skiers who like to venture off-trail, as wind at the weekend has stripped some areas.

The ski area is enjoying a good ski season with relatively stable weather and its upper base has hit the magic metre mark after plenty of snowmaking and 17cm of fresh snow early last week.

It allowed the opening of the expert off-piste area of the Bluffs for the first time this winter, located just above the snowmaking area and access road.

Violence on the rise in schools From P1 Kuipers said he thought the majority of the suggested changes would be “of value” to schools, but he would also like to see the root cause of the problem targeted.

“We need to look at the reasons why there has been an increase in bullying,” he said.

“Making changes in schools doesn’t actually reduce the problem... we need to find out what is the cause.”

He said where students were acting violently, the home environment needed to be considered. Where adults were acting in a more abusive and disrespectful manner, larger societal issues needed to be looked at.

NZEI Te Riu Roa president Lynda Stuart said schools need to be safe places for everyone: “creative and compassionate spaces where children can meet their potential, and teachers and leaders can do their jobs free of all types of harassment,” she said.

“There are two parallel issues going on here. One is children with learning difficulties trying to access the help and support that they and their families need, and the other is adults whose behaviour in a learning environment is sometimes unacceptable.”

Valetta collapse fix being worked on

Experts are working through possible fixes for a collapsed section of pipe on the Valetta line of MHV Water.

MHV Water was formed a year ago with the merger of Valetta Irrigation and Mayfield Hinds Irrigation and the Valetta line serving over 50 farmers.

MHV Water chief executive Melanie Brooks confirmed yesterday the collapse of a 1600mm pipe that transports water between storage ponds.

The Valetta scheme was piped in 2013 and won a prestigious irrigation award for its innovation.

Pipe made on-site was laid in lengths of up to 250m, reducing welding and installation time and costs.

Brooks said staff were investigating a leak in a section of the pipe when the collapse happened last week. “When we were draining the line, one of the breathers blocked creating a vacuum which effectively collapsed the top of the pipe. Our team responded quickly and damage was kept to a minimum.”

In brief Hypnotist fundraiser Ashburton College basketballers have called on the services of hypnotist Dave Upfold to help them cope with booming numbers of students who want to play the sport. The college has seven teams in various weekly competitions in Timaru and Christchurch. The growing numbers mean more gear, including uniforms, basketballs and other training tools are needed. The hypnotist is hosting a fun, family show in the college auditorium on August 9 to help raise funds. Committee member Mark Douglas said it was great entertainment, with Upfold’s style of comedy and hypnotism making for a fun night for all ages. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students.

Dog registration nature were unusual they have been experienced before in irrigation, natural gas and other industries where pipes were commonplace, and as such experts had been called to work out a fix.

At its simplest, the pipe could be re-pressurised and pop back into place. The worst case scenario involved having to replace the pipe.

The irrigation season starts on September 10 and we are working hard to meet this time.”

The collapsed pipe cuts a scar across the land with the furrow resembling an earthquake fault line, with a marked depression.

MHV Water are a partner in

the Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) project where unused stockwater is filtered back into underground aquifers to help improve the quantity and quality of groundwater in the region.

Brooks said that whilst there will be some limited disruption to the Lagmhor site, the majority of the new MAR sites would be unaffected.

Judge views racist remark as provocation A racist remark made to Mana Terare Tuakoi was viewed as provocation by an Ashburton District Court judge this week.

Judge Joanna Maze was sentencing Tuakoi, 21, on charges of injuring with reckless disregard and unlawfully interfering with a motor scooter.

Tuakoi had also admitted charges of driving with excess breath alcohol (484mcg) and driving while forbidden.

Police caught the unlicensed driver behind the wheel of a car

in the McDonald’s carpark earlier this year.

He was sentenced to a combined 230 hours’ community work, nine months’ supervision and disqualified from driving for six months.

At the end of the driving ban, he may apply to drive with a zero alcohol licence.

Judge Maze said Tuakoi was drunk when he was walking with a woman on the night of the assault and he moved a motor scooter a short distance before

being confronted by a group of 12 people who came out of a house near where the scooter was parked.

A young woman was holding the scooter when someone made a racist remark, that prompted Tuakoi to push the scooter away from the woman, then he punched her once to the side of the face with enough force to knock her unconscious.

The judge said police later found weapons at the scene, though there was no suggestion

the group had used them on Tuakoi or his companion.

A report said the victim of the assault was taken to hospital.

She had recovered but had been deeply distressed about the court case and relieved Tuakoi had pleaded guilty.

Judge Maze said the assault was out of character, but the racist remark had provoked his reaction and he feared for his safety and that of his companion.

The young woman he struck though had not posed a threat.

Mid Canterbury dog owners have been busy registering their animals online with the Ashburton District Council. July is annual dog registration month and just over three-quarters of the 7000 or so dogs in the district have been registered. A council spokesperson said there were still about 1650 known dogs still to be registered.

Late penalties may apply from today, with infringement notices issued from September 1 if dogs remained unregistered.

Unregistered dogs may be seized from September 11.

Cooking fire Ashburton Fire and Emergency volunteers raced down Beach Road to attend a small cooking fire yesterday afternoon. Shortly after 5pm a pot on a stove had caught alight, but it was put out before firefighters could get there and before any damage occurred.

Embarrassing scam Kiwis are being hit by a scam where people are told they will have potentially embarrassing footage released if they do not pay up. Police yesterday warned about the email scam saying they had been contacted by several victims.

The email states malware had been installed on the recipient’s device and had captured information about them including a password, along with potentially embarrassing footage.

New site confirmed The Ashburton Baptist Church Op Shop has been in limbo since its location of the old church on Havelock Street was demolished at the end of last year.

Clothes have been stored in a portacom, but that is all changing this week as a new site has been confirmed.

Tomorrow the op shop will reopen in the new church’s foyer at the neighbouring Cass Street site.

The op shop is one of a number of services provided by the church, which also includes a free community lunch on Mondays.

“God has been good to us and we just want to spread that out into the community,” said Shaw.

The shop was to also provide free tea and coffee and couches for those wanting to stop by.

The opening will be 10.30am tomorrow, and espresso coffee and cake will also be on offer.

The shop will then operate 9.30am to 1.30pm Wednesday to Friday, and will be packed away at the end of each week leaving the foyer clear for other church activities.

Going beautifully bald to support cancer sufferers

An enthusiastic crowd gathered in the entrance of Snap Fitness Ashburton to witness a regular gym goer and beloved local bus driver lose her locks for charity yesterday.

Hilary Singlewood was all smiles as her long silver hair was shorn off.

Singlewood has driven the Tinwald School Bus for 15 years and said she has spent the past three or four years growing out her hair with the goal of donating it for a wig for chemotherapy patients.

The shave was carried out by Lyn Bartlett and Nicole Cavill from Clippers Hair Studio Ashburton.

Asked how she felt following the shave, Singlewood said “drafty.”

Snap Fitness Manager Summer Swansbury said Singlewood had been her favourite bus driver ever and was a loyal member of the gym, so it was great to be able to support her.

Singlewood will be donating funds to the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society, while her locks – which have never been treated or dyed – will be sent to Dunedin to be made into a wig for cancer and alopecia patients.

Quarterly rates from now on

Experts call for ban on sunbeds

Ashburton District ratepayers will notice a change to their rates invoices when the first instalment for the 2018/19 year arrives in their email or letter box from this week, with a new quarterly instalment schedule now in place, as well as a new-look invoice design.

There will now be four rates invoices sent to ratepayers each year, instead of six, bringing the district’s rating instalments into line with the majority other district councils around the country.

The reduced number of invoices, which are now sent every three months instead of two months, does not affect the amount that people pay through their rates each year.

Invoices will now be sent out in July, October, January and April, and are due on the 20th of the following month.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said the amount of money on the invoice was more than previous because it was for three months of rates, instead of two.

“You’ll also see that the design of the invoice has changed. We’ve

updated the invoices so that they are easier to understand.”

People still have the ability to pay their rates on a schedule that suits their budget, such as weekly, fortnightly, monthly or two monthly. These options are available through direct debit, but Favel said people may need to contact the council if they wish to continue paying rates every two months through this method.

“Anyone who previously paid their rates two-monthly using direct debit and who hasn’t already gotten in touch with us will automatically have their payments changed from two-monthly to quarterly. Please contact us if you’d prefer your payments to continue coming out every two months.”

The council voted to change the rating instalment schedule in February this year as a way of delivering a more efficient and cost effective service.

The new schedule also aligns with the invoicing practices of 47 out of 51 district councils in New Zealand.

Experts are calling for mandatory sunscreen standards and a total ban on sunbeds after alarming figures show New Zealand had the highest skin cancer rates in the world.

The 2018 Skin Cancer Index published by the German medical analyst group Derma.plus revealed nearly 2500 New Zealanders were diagnosed with skin cancer every year.

Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said these findings were a concern but not surprising considering New Zealand still didn’t have adequate protection in place to try and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

“Unfortunately we have been campaigning for this for along time and we don’t seem to getting any traction on the mandatory standards.”

Consumer NZ last year tested 20 sunscreens against the Australia and New Zealand standard and only nine met their SPF label claim.

“Our test found some natural sunscreens only provided low protection.

“One didn’t meet high protection or broad spectrum claims and two companies – including one big brand – provided test certificates for similar, but not identical sunscreens,” Chetwin said.

She said despite the recommendation to slop on sunscreen in order to prevent sunburn, New Zealand classified sunscreen as a cosmetic.

“This is clearly not protecting consumers against the sun’s harmful rays.”

Experts are calling for a total ban on sunbeds because of New Zealand’s alarming skin cancer rates.

In April, New Zealand’s nonmelanoma skin cancer rates (basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) hit an alltime high.

Non-melanoma skin cancer rates were projected to reach a new record high, affecting 90,000 people this year, up from 67,000 cases in 2006.

Professor Dietrick Abeck, chief medical advisor at Derma. plus, said globally the incidence of both non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers had increased dramatically over the past decades.

“Worldwide, more than three million non-melanoma skin cancers and 150,000 melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed each year. One in every three cancers diagnosed is a skin cancer,” Abeck said.

For New Zealand, a higher expenditure on treatment showed a lower mortality rate, while

Sweden, which has the fourthhighest rate of melanoma, spent more than any of the 62 countries looked at.

But Chetwin said New Zealand had a long way to go in terms of prevention.

She said sunbeds were another big risk. Using one before the age of 30 could increase the risk of melanoma by 75 per cent.

Like sunscreens, compliance with the sunbed standard was voluntary.

“Existing regulation isn’t providing sufficient consumer protection and it’s time the government made the sunscreen standard mandatory and banned sunbeds.

“These measures are already in place in Australia and with our higher skin cancer rates it’s not good enough our regulations are lagging behind,” Chetwin said.

The Guardian has been blessed to have some outstanding journalists working the rural round over the years, but for the past few weeks we have been without.

So, today marks a significant day for the Guardian’s rural reporting with renowned farming and rural reporter, Tim Cronshaw joining the team, replacing Colin Williscroft who left us late last month.

Anyone with a rural background, or a strong interest of

the rural and farming sectors will have been sure to come across some of Tim’s work throughout his impressive career which has seen him winning national and international awards for his work in the media in relation to the rural round.

After a lengthy stint as the head of the rural department for The Press in Christchurch, Tim has spent the past few years working for the Stuff brand as one of the leading men behind their rural coverage, so he steps into the role today being right up to speed with what is going on and what challenges the rural sector is currently facing.

Tim will be at the helm of both of our monthly rural publications,

Guardian Farming and Dairy Focus ,and also will contribute to the daily newspaper, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when we have our dedicated rural pages.

That time I tried a cheese roll T

his bi-weekly column began as a journal of my experiences assimilating into Mid Canterbury, and I’m proud to feel well on the way – in all respects but one.

They say there’s no better way to understand a culture than through its food, and until yesterday I was yet to acquaint my taste buds with a classic Cantabrian cheese roll.

The small, stout objects are the undeniable ugly duckling of many a spectacular café cabinet around town, retailing for an astronomical $4.50 at the Somerset Grocer despite seemingly simplistic composition.

Riddle me that.

As an Aucklander the cheese roll always seemed like a nearmythological marvel, religiously revered by the hundreds.

Yet, on arrival to Ashburton and my first glimpse into the culinary scene, I couldn’t help but think that cheese rolls look just like a toasty that has been

rolled up to minimise the surface area and diminish the time spent enjoying them.

They appear to be crafted as a brief patriotic caress for the tongue, compacted so consumers can stash more than one in their Swanndri pocket, or devour them in two bites and more quickly return to tending the heifers.

I don’t have any heifers to tend to, nor anything really worth rushing my lunch for (sorry, Guardian management).

Yesterday afternoon I just wanted a memorable, mainlander meal.

I wanted a flavour hit like the 5 Gum TV ad.

I wanted to relish every dastardly little calorie I was ingesting.

Delivering the cheese roll from crispy paper bag to hot toasty machine (I wasn’t having it cold, you animals), I wondered if my wishes would be granted.

The cheese roll quietly sizzled on the toasted sandwich maker with the faint echoes of inter district-rivalry, well-funded school camps and despairing nutritionists.

White slowly turned to crispy brown indicating that it was ready for consumption. I bit. I chewed. I waited.

That cheese roll held all the tasting notes of nothingness.

Six ingredients, two segments of the food pyramid and decades of high repute collided with absolutely mediocre results.

I felt like a small child wanting to build a sandcastle, but stuck with cold, shingly ol’ Whakanui Beach.

I felt the time I clambered up a Mt Hutt Forest track in the rain; only to realise there was absolutely no lookout spots at the top, just more fricken mud and beech trees.

I felt like the time I believed the stream through the Domain was the lauded Ashburton River.

I felt underwhelmed.

The texture was the only redeeming factor.

It was crisp on the outside (a real credit to my own toasting skills I reckon), yet soft and gooey as a Nicholas Sparks novel within.

The smooth cheese stretched like a fresh pair of Red Bands.

But alas, all that structural integrity held no flavour, and like the gumboots, no strong kick.

My South Island township experiences have so often been a matter of “surprisingly sophisticated”.

Unfortunately, disappointingly, the cheese roll appears to be the antithesis.

And you will get a Traffic Infringement Notice in the mail.

No arguments accepted.

Pay the $3,000,000 fine or else face Kalta the Dragon who is hungry for filling her quota of victims.

Have at least one sworn witness in the passenger seat, a Mer-

cedes Benz and brand new tyres.

Better still stick to SH1 and the endless traffic flow of heavy commercial trucks, where you might get squashed, but that’s life.

And we have a job to do, protecting the public.

Or even better, stay at home and watch endless Coro.

Or do your shopping elsewhere.

PS: End of letter, but in case you want to know – for Tengil’s men read Astrid Lindgren, but not to the children before bedtime.

Zimbabwe vote count starts Polling stations in Zimbabwe have closed after the country’s first election without former leader Robert Mugabe on the ballot.

The electoral commission said it will announce final results within five days.

Earlier, the main opposition leader said reports of voting delays were a “deliberate attempt” to undermine his supporters.

The allegations by Nelson Chamisa, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change party, intensified concerns about management of the election and the prospect of a dispute over its outcome.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former deputy president, has promised a credible vote that he hopes will bring international legitimacy and investment. A seriously flawed process could signal more stagnation.

Mugabe, 94, ruled Zimbabwe from independence in 1980 until his resignation in November, and many people are anxious for change.

She said she was confident that voting at most of the country’s nearly 11,000 polling stations would be completed by closing time.

Turnout averaged 75 per cent, higher than the last vote in 2013, Chigumba said.

Australia, US and Japan sign regional pact Australia is forming a new infrastructure partnership with the United States and Japan, amid rising concerns of Chinese influence throughout the Indo-Pacific.

The trilateral pact promises to mobilise investment in projects that drive economic growth, create opportunities and foster a “free, open, inclusive and prosperous” region.

The agreement is in direct competition to China’s One Belt, One Road infrastructure initiative, and is widely seen as an attempt by the US to offer smaller nations an alternative to Beijing.

Without making specific ref-

erence to China, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said overnight the Trump administration was seeking “partners, not domination” in the IndoPacific.

Australian Trade Minister Steve Ciobo denied the threeway initiative was a challenge to China, saying it only added to various regional programs already underway.

“I think it’s wrong to view these things as either/or. The fact is we can participate in and be part of all of the initiatives in the region,” Ciobo told Sky News yesterday.

“All of this, this broad sweep of initiatives in the region, is all

about addressing the huge unmet demand for the provision of infrastructure throughout the Indo-Pacific region.”

The minister said he was not bracing for any backlash from China.

“The fact is that we demonstrate consistently that Australia is very focused on making sure that we can help the least developed economies in our region to get onto a more economically sustainable footing,” he said.

Royal Navy had rescued Manchester bomber The suicide bomber who killed 22 people at a pop concert in Manchester had been rescued from the civil war in Libya by the British Royal Navy three years prior, a UK government spokesman said.

Salman Abedi was 19 when he boarded the HMS Enterprise in Tripoli in August 2014 with his younger brother Hashem and more than 100 other British citizens.

It is understood his name was on a list of stranded British citizens handed to the crew in charge of the evacuation.

In May last year, Abedi

killed 22 people, including seven children, at an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena using a homemade suicide vest.

“During the deteriorating security situation in Libya in 2014, Border Force officials were deployed to assist with the evacuation of British nationals and their dependants,” a UK government spokesman said.

Security services had been monitoring Abedi when he travelled to Libya but his case was closed a month before his rescue.

The Anderson review into the Manchester attack found that the decision to

close Abedi’s case as a “subject of interest” was sound, based on the information available to security services at the time.

A British government source has told the Daily Mail: “For this man to commit such an atrocity on UK soil after we rescued him from Libya was an act of utter betrayal.”

Hashem Abedi is held in jail in Libya by a militia group, but the British government has requested his extradition to face trial for his involvement in the attack.

The request has so far been refused.

Douglas speaks on cancer Michael Douglas says surviving cancer has made him focus more on the future than the past. The Fatal Attraction star announced that he had been diagnosed with the life-threatening illness in 2010.

The 73-year-old, who is married to Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, said the experience has made him “pretty positive about the past” and focus more on his immediate future. “We’ve all made our fair share of mistakes in anything, (but) I’ve got a pretty good track record,” he said. “I’m looking now at about 50 years in the business and all of that. I like my track record; I mean the ones I said ‘no’ to, I didn’t make many mistakes, I was pretty right on those.”

Hikers rescued in Indonesia At least 543 hikers have been rescued from Mount Rinjani volcano on the Indonesian island of Lombok after being stranded by landslides triggered by a deadly earthquake, an official says.

At least 16 people were killed by falling debris and more than 350 were injured, most of them seriously, after Sunday’s magnitude 6.4 earthquake.

There were 189 foreigners among the hikers rescued by a team involving civilians, soldiers and police, according to agency spokesman Sutopo Nugroho.

Another six climbers and one dead body were found on the mountain, with retrieval efforts continuing.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which is known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Pussy Riot detained again Moscow Four members of the political punk group Pussy Riot who ran onto the pitch during the soccer World Cup final in Moscow have been detained immediately after their release from prison, the group says. The group has claimed on its Facebook page that the four band members were detained by police on as they were leaving the Moscow prison where they had completed a 15-day sentence for disrupting the match.

The reason for their detention was unclear, but the group said the members were accused of staging public events without prior notice, adding that they could face fines or a further 10 days in prison.

Business confidence falling – ANZ

Contact Energy is selling its Rockgas LPG business to gas network operator Gas Services NZ Midco for $260 million, which it will use to pay down debt.

The cash deal is expected to be completed by the end of this calendar year and will see Contact partner with GSNZ to enable it to continue to offer LPG to mass market customers, Contact said in a statement.

Rockgas and Contact will crosssell their respective LPG and electricity products and Contact will provide customer support services for an annual fee of $2 million.

Contact is New Zealand’s largest electricity retailer and secondlargest electricity generator, producing about a quarter of New Zealand’s electricity from hydro,

geothermal and gas-fired power stations. It bought the Rockgas business, which buys and distributes LPG, for $156 million in 2007 from its then majority shareholder Origin Energy.

Contact said yesterday the deal still enables it to offer LPG to customers and allows it to focus on its customer and generation businesses to deliver strong cash flows for distribution to shareholders.

“The Rockgas business is markedly different to the generation of electricity at single sites and the retailing of electricity, natural gas and broadband, which are distributed on networks not owned or controlled by Contact. Contact’s primary strategic interest in LPG is being able to offer the product as part of its energy offering to

customers which is retained as part of the transaction,” Contact said.

“Divesting Rockgas will enable greater focus and allow for accelerated transformation in the customer business, delivering digitally led customer experience improvements and ultimately creating value for shareholders.”

Contact said the sale proceeds will strengthen its balance sheet, with its key debt ratio falling below its target, and facilitate improved distributions to shareholders.

The sale requires Overseas Investment Office approval as well as other changes to contract agreements.

Contact shares last traded at $5.72, having gained 2.9 per cent so far this year.

Telco company increases debt capacity New Zealand telecommunications operator 2Degrees is adding $50 million in senior debt capacity to its balance sheet as it refinances an existing $200 million debt facility and bumps it up to $250 million, according to the company’s parent, US-based Trilogy International partners.

Lead managed by Dutch multinational ING Bank, the new arrangement also includes a $35 million “accordion facility” which Trilogy said could be used in the future to fund capital expenditures.

“The completion of this refinancing, which is an upsize of our existing debt facility, is another vote of confidence in our company,” 2Degrees chief execu-

tive Stewart Sherriff said in the Trilogy statement.

“Third-party lenders are effectively validating our business case. The new loan provides borrowing capacity for further in-

vestments in the 2Degrees business.”

2Degrees lifted net profit 33 per cent to $19 million in calendar 2017, with revenue gains outpacing costs and tax credits assisting.

Between establishment in 2009 and the end of 2015, the company clocked up accumulated losses of $396.8 million as it invested heavily in a national mobile network and moved into fixed-line telephone and broadband services to allow it to compete across the full range of telecommunications services.

By the end of 2017, its 4G coverage reached 96 per cent of the population, up from 79 per cent in the prior year.

But with businesses in a funk, it’s fair to say that the road ahead is looking less assured, and risks of a stall have increased.”

ANZ also noted that commercial construction intentions are at negative 17 per cent, down six points, while retail construction intentions dropped two points to positive 16 per cent.

New Zealand business confidence reached a 10-year low in July, with headline confidence and firm’s views of their own prospects dropping.

A net 45 per cent of 340 firms surveyed in the ANZ business outlook survey for July expect general business conditions to deteriorate in the coming 12 months, five points lower than June’s result and the lowest that measure has been since May 2008.

The survey has become a political football since the election as confidence has continued to weaken. ANZ noted yesterday that “firms’ perceptions of their own prospects are a better gauge of economic outcomes, but the news wasn’t upbeat here either”, with that measure down five points to a net four per cent of firms predicting increased activity in their own business, from a net nine per cent last month. That’s the lowest since May 2009, “and well below the long-term average of +27”, ANZ said.

“This economy feels increasingly late in the cycle,” ANZ said.

■ Dressing: Squeeze cooked garlic out of its skin and mash in a small bowl.

■ Add in yoghurt, lemon juice, extra cumin and honey; mix to combine.

■ To serve, divide salad ingredients among serving plates.

■ Top with pumpkin and beef.

■ Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Lightly grease a 24hole mini muffin pan.

■ Layer filo sheets, brushing each with butter and sprinkling with sugar. Brush top layer with butter. Cut filo stack into 24 equal squares. Line muffin holes with

■ Pour water into a small jug.

Sprinkle gelatine over. Whisk vigorously with a fork to dissolve. Whisk into cream cheese mixture.

Classic Watters Cup competition

Black Sticks crash out

T

here’s a big game of rugby on this weekend, in case you hadn’t heard.

No, I’m not talking about the one up the road in Christchurch on Saturday night, although yes, that too is a fairly big match.

I’m talking about Mid Canterbury Rugby’s big dance – the 2018 Watters Cup final at the Ashburton Showgrounds.

Don’t go asking me who’s going to take it out, because A) as a sports reporter it’s my job to remain impartial and unbiased on such occasions, and B) I actually honestly don’t have a clue.

But I’m as interested as the next person to see just how it plays out.

This year’s Watters Cup has produced some of the most exciting games of rugby I have seen in a long time.

The past two weeks alone have been outstanding, with Rakaia and Southern playing out two incredible games where the old saying ‘a game of two halves’ was absolutely fitting.

Two weeks ago, Rakaia came from two points down at half time to blow Southern off the

park to keep their Watters Cup chances alive and set up a rematch between the two teams a week later, to decide just who would go on to meet Celtic in the Watters Cup final.

The fact that Celtic finished top and got that week off was a big deal too.

Their win over Methven, and Southern’s loss to Rakaia, put Celtic straight into their first Watters Cup final since 2012, and it was something not many would have picked heading into the final round robin games.

Southern had been the clear frontrunners in the competition, while Rakaia had struggled since losing the combined competition final to Waihora.

On paper, Southern should have beaten Rakaia and gone straight through to the final, but instead they lost and had to fight for their spot in the final.

They truly had to fight, too.

They’d lost so many players to injury one of their coaching staff was even considering pulling his boots on again, but instead they included four players from their B side on the bench who didn’t even arrive at the ground until

half-way through the first half, having had to play their own semi-final in Ashburton first.

When they arrived, their side was well in control and even the most avid Rakaia supporter was starting to come to terms with that fact their season was probably done.

But just like they did the week before, Rakaia charged back and turned the game on its head.

After a see-sawing final 10 minutes though, it was Southern who prevailed and sealed their spot in the 2018 final where they will defend the title they won over Rakaia in 2017.

By dinner time on Saturday we will know.

Either Celtic’s Danny Hurley, or Southern’s Eric Duff will have proudly lifted the Watters Cup aloft and the celebrations and

commiserations will be well under way.

It’s been a great competition, and I have no doubt the final will be the same, and that next year’s Watters Cup will step it up a notch again.

In recent years, the Watters Cup had really come down to four teams.

Hampstead may have been there, but it had been many years since they’d been real contenders. This season though, they showed they were well and truly on the up.

They may not have won a game – making it nine years since they last won a Watters Cup game – but they weren’t blown off the park. Far from it.

They only lost to both Methven and Rakaia in the final minute, they led Southern at half time 15-12, and only trailed Celtic by four at half time.

They’ve come a long way, and that’s great news for Mid Canterbury Rugby.

Five strong, evenly-matched teams fighting it out for Mid Canterbury Rugby supremacy is what we want, and what we’re heading for in 2019.

The Mainland Tactix have been long known as one of New Zealand’s weakest franchises having never made the playoffs in their 11-year history.

But the Christchurch-based side are now on the brink of securing a spot in the ANZ Premiership elimination final after defeating the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic 62-60.

In the tightly contested clash at Hamilton’s Claudelands Arena, the Tactix claimed their first ANZ Premiership victory over the Magic to overtake the third-placed Northern Mystics on the ladder and put themselves back in contention for the playoffs.

The wait is now on to see whether the Mystics will pull off a miracle win over the Central Pulse tonight.

Should the Northerners claim victory over the league leaders, the highly-contested finals spot will be decided by percentage and as things stand, the Mystics hold a 1.62 per cent advantage.

Meanwhile, injured Magic captain Casey Kopua will undoubtedly be disappointed with her side’s final standing at the bottom of the table after an injury-ravaged campaign.

The Magic defence unit continued to waver without their influential skipper while leading Tactix duo Temalisi Fakahokotau and Jane Watson caused early problems for the Waikato shooters.

Working in unison to contain the accurate Lenize Potgieter, the defending duo limited the Magic’s opportunity to score. And with sharpshooter Ellie Bird in sublime form, the Tactix secured an early lead.

But with a stunning run of goals from Bird in the final minutes of the clash, the Tactix secured victory in what could be considered one of the most exhilarating matches of the season.

The Vantage Black Sticks Women have been knocked out of the Hockey World Cup going down 2-0 to a strong Argentina side in the team’s crossover match in London.

Separated by just one place in the world rankings there was nothing to choose between the two teams in the opening quarter.

The Vantage Black Sticks Women started with some busy attack work but it was Argentina who came closest to breaking the deadlock.

Lucina von der Hydes strike on goal well saved by New Zealand goalkeeper Grace OHanlon.

World player of the year Delfina Merino also firing over the crossbar from the middle of the circle.

Up the other end good work from Stacey Michelsen led to Shiloh Gloyn getting a shot in on the Argentinian goal but it was kicked away to safety by goalkeeper Succi.

Good pressure from New Zealand prevented the South Americans from getting into their stride and Argentinas lack of clinical finishing continued.

New Zealand were also struggling to properly test Belen Succi between the Argentinian posts, Gloyn with another attempt to deflect the ball home after a strong cross from the right flank, tight marking from the opposition putting her off with the ball going wide.

The first quarter went one way and then the other with Argentina edging possession and both teams recording 3 shots each.

New Zealand came out the blocks quickly in the second quarter, good work from Anita McLaren on the right led to a half chance for Kelsey Smith but she couldn’t contact cleanly and the ball dribbled wide.

Argentina upped the pace and forced two penalty corners in quick succession.

Then came something many struggled to remember happening before.

A strong penalty corner shot forced a great save from New Zealand’s goalkeeper Grace OHanlon.

The ball fell to Habif who would have slotted home the rebound with ease. As she went to strike the ball however O’Hanlon’s glove flew through the air and the striker connected with the equipment rather than the ball. After a video referral Argentina were awarded a penalty stroke.

Noel Barrioneuvo stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

Argentina doubled its lead from a well worked penalty corner. The ball came back to taker Augustina Habif who played it across to Delfino Merino who smashed the ball into the back of the Kiwis net.

Argentina led 2-0.

With its world cup hopes slipping away in the dying minutes New Zealand took off goalkeeper Grace OHanlon converting defender Brooke Neal into a kicking fullback, giving the Kiwis the extra outfield player.

But it was to no avail and the Kiwis lost by two goals.

Ashburton College’s senior boys’ basketball team pulled off a massive upset on Monday, downing Rangiora High School in a sporting exchange between the two schools.

Both teams played in the Canterbury secondary schools’ Thomson Trophy competition, but Rangiora were in division one where they were currently battling for a spot in the play-offs, while Ashburton were in division two where they were third on points differential.

The game was always going to be a gauge of where Ashburton were at compared to the division one sides, and coming away with an 86-81 win provided them with a huge confidence boost, coach Brian Kerr said.

“This was a game of belief.

“We weren’t expected to win this game, so the win is so much sweeter,” Kerr said.

“There were some big plays from a number of players just when it was really needed and from a coach’s perspective that is gold.

“I am really proud of these lads.”

Good early plays and aggressive defence creating turnovers, saw Ashburton start the better of the two, and they went out to a 23-12 lead at quarter time.

That form continued in the second quarter as they hit from long range and continued their intense defence, collapsing onto

Even though Ashburton missed some free throws they managed to pinch some big rebounds and regather possession and were able to wind the clock down and take the win, Kerr said.

“It was a cracking game of basketball with both teams giving everything,” Kerr said.

“This was a real team effort where everyone played their part.

“Marc Juntilla had a massive game and was inspirational in the final quarter as he re-ignited college’s intensity and belief.

“Fotu Hala had another good game, pulling in rebounds and hitting some big shots and getting a big reject near the end of the fourth quarter to steal possession back for the college.

“Riley Sa again showed a maturity beyond his years.

“He hit a couple of big threes as well as pinching two free throw rebounds off the opposition.

“This gave possession back to college which allowed another opportunity to score or force Rangiora to foul.”

Penuel Pantaleon also hustled on defence and utilised his speed on the fast break, throwing himself into everything, Kerr said.

Top tips on the court A Thursday morning basketball development programme run by Ashburton basketball coaches Mark Douglas and Pip Johnston is set to kick off again this week. The programme which focused on skills and drills started in term two and was such a hit the pair had decided to do it all again in term three. LeBron James leaves a lasting home town legacy LeBron James stood on a stage near one of the streets he walked as a troubled kid and looked out at thousands of faces.

He felt connected to every one of them.

While his 3-year-old daughter, Zhuri, played at his feet, James watched as his mother, Gloria, raised a flag in front of a school that is perhaps his greatest triumph.

Before leaving for Los Angeles, James gave his hometown quite a gift.

James, who ended his second stint with Cleveland earlier this month by signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, on Monday opened his I Promise School, a yeararound learning centre devoted to some of the city’s most challenged youngsters – ones just like him.

For James, who recalled missing 82 days of school as a fourth grader while he and his mom “looked for stability,” the opening culminated years of planning by his family foundation.

“This means everything,” James said in an interview before the public event.

“I think this is the greatest accomplishment for me because it’s not just me.

“A championship is for a team, that’s for an organisation and a city. But these kids, this is for generation after generation after generation and it’s for these kids, so it means everything.”

It was an emotional day for James, who also made his first comments since signing the $154m deal with the Lakers – a move

still causing tremors across in the NBA. James recalled beating the odds of his youth when life was a daily struggle for him and his mom. Nothing was easy as the pair constantly moved and it was only with the help of others than James found structure.

Now, he’s giving kids with the same problems a path. “There is no way I could have imagined this,” he said.

“I remember our foundation having a bike-a-thon, and I never thought a fivemile bike ride would turn into a school.

This is something I’m at a loss of words for.”

As far as basketball, the 33-year-old superstar said the decision to leave Cleveland again was difficult, but he didn’t rule out a second homecoming with the Cavaliers.

“Listen, I don’t close the chapter on anything or close the book on anything,” James said when asked if he would return to Cleveland to end his career.

“But hopefully I can one day and watch my jersey go up into the rafters, that’s for sure.”

When James announced that he was leaving the Cavs, Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert, who famously ripped him when he left the first time, said the franchise would retire “the famous #23 Cavs jersey one day down the line.”

“I didn’t hear that,” he said. “I haven’t been in the news. That’s awesome.”

James led the Cavs to an NBA title in 2016, ending Cleveland’s 52-year championship drought, and to four straight Finals – a run he admitted he didn’t think was even possible when he returned in 2014 after four seasons in Miami.

James didn’t offer many details about what prompted him to sign with the Lakers, but the lure of playing for one of the most successful franchises in all of sports was more than intriguing.

“There’s no reason you should become a Laker, a Yankee, become part of Man U, part of some franchise or clubs and you don’t think about winning championships or winning at the highest level,” James said. “That’s what the history is all about.”

James has his work cut out for him in Los Angeles.

He’ll join a young team that added some interesting pieces – Lance Stephenson, Rajon Rondo, Michael Beasley and JaVale McGee – but a squad that has a long way to go before it can challenge defending champion Golden State Warriors.

“What my expectations are for the team, we don’t have any right now,” James said.

“But we’re definitely going to be better than we were the previous year.”

This trip will take him thousands of miles from home. But as James reminded students, family and friends ihe’ll never be far away.

Collegiate, Rakaia to battle for cup honours There were celebrations in the Collegiate camp on Saturday after the club’s senior B side sealed themselves a spot in the Second Grade Cup final against Rakaia, with a narrow 29-26 win over Southern. Rakaia also had a fight on their hands to secure their spot in the final, beating Celtic 33-26. Rakaia has already won the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy and the Centennial Mug, after a season in which they’ve only been defeated once. That 18-17 loss came at the hands of Celtic on July 14. The weekend after the Second Grade Cup final, Rakaia will play Collegiate for the Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup at Mt Somers.

By Scott Bailey Parramatta’s clash with the Gold Coast on Saturday night shapes as an almost must-win battle for the Eels if they are to avoid their third wooden spoon in seven years.

While the competition is tight at the top, the two points that separate 13th from 16th makes for the second-closest spoon battle with five rounds to go in more than a decade.

Two points behind Canterbury, Manly and North Queensland, Parramatta must win at least two of their last five games to climb their way up from the bottom of the ladder.

Given they have clashes with topfour teams in St George Illawarra, Melbourne and the Sydney Roosters to come, Saturday’s clash shapes as a vital one.

“We don’t want to come last, that’s definitely our goal this year,” Eels halfback Mitchell Moses said.

“It’s not a goal we want to have.

“We’ve put ourselves in this situation and we need to get out of it.”

The form of the Titans could also prove pivotal over the final month.

While they are all but out of spoon contention themselves, they play both the Cowboys and Manly in their

run home with very little to play for.

Meanwhile clashes between Canterbury and Manly in round 22 and Parramatta and the Cowboys will also be billed as spoonbowls.

Manly theoretically have the easiest run, with three games against teams in the bottom eight as they attempt to avoid the first spoon in their club’s proud 70-year history.

In contrast, Canterbury’s run is the toughest with Manly their only opponent from outside the eight, although they do have a superior for-andagainst to the other cellar-dwellers.

Meanwhile North Queensland and Parramatta both face each other, the Gold Coast and three top-eight teams in their final rounds.

The Sea Eagles, Cowboys and Eels had all made the finals last year, the latter two were being tipped by some pundits to be this year’s grand final combatants before a ball was kicked.

But last year’s heroics are cold comfort now.

“You don’t want to finish last even if you’re not talked about,” Eels fullback Clinton Gutherson said.

“It’s the same feeling coming last if you’re not talked about.

“It’s just not where you want to be.”

Sims out to break duck

The Eels are staring down the barrel at the wooden spoon.

In his 114-game NRL career, Brisbane forward Korbin Sims has never played finals football.

But Sims believes he will make up for lost time by winning the 2018 premiership with the Brisbane Broncos before joining brother Tariq at St George Illawarra next year. The Fijian international said there were no hard feelings after being “forced out” by the Broncos.

Sims, 26, signed a three-year Dragons deal from 2019 after there was no Broncos salary cap room left.

Lions fully fit for final

BY DANIEL GILHOOLY Dynamic Springboks wing Aphiwe Dyantyi has been cleared of injury and will play for the Lions in the Super Rugby final against the Crusaders.

A relieved Swys de Bruin has included Dyantyi in a 25-man squad for the flight from Johannesburg to Christchurch ahead of Saturday’s decider.

The left winger, who started all three tests against England in June, underlined his class with a brilliant long-range solo try in the semi-final win over the Waratahs.

He picked up a hamstring twinge and was replaced at halftime.

However, the 23-year-old was cleared to travel, along with South Africa under-20 flanker Cyle Brink, who missed the semifinal with an arm injury.

De Bruin has named all 23 players who beat the Waratahs 44-26 at Ellis Park, along with Brink and utility back Shaun Reynolds.

Jones gets a warning

BY DUNCAN BECH England’s Rugby Football Union have warned Eddie Jones that they expect him to reverse the team’s recent slump by delivering a successful autumn campaign.

The team’s five-test losing run came to an end with a 25-10 victory in Cape Town on June 23, but the series against South Africa had already been conceded three months after England’s alarming fifth-place finish in the Six Nations.

The Australian coach retains Twickenham’s backing but he must produce a strong November series against the Springboks, New Zealand, Japan and Australia to ease speculation over his future.

“We plan to win every game we play. We expect success in the autumn,” RFU chief executive Steve Brown said.

“I don’t want to predict failure, I’d rather predict success, but that’s not in blind faith.

“They’re all big matches. We’re planning to come out of the other side successful.”

Brown and Jones reviewed England’s tour to South Africa upon the head coach’s return to these shores before discussing the punishing autumn schedule which looms on the horizon.

Jones’ early success when replacing Stuart Lancaster continues to hold weight at Twickenham, but it has been made clear that this year’s decline is unacceptable.

“I’ve reflected over the time Eddie has been at his post and his win rate (80 per cent).

“The win rate is still very high – it’s significant and it’s hard to argue against it,” Brown said.

“It’s important that we don’t just make a judgement on what’s happened in the very short term.

Nevertheless, it was a pretty poor run of results.

“We showed great character for the result in Cape Town but the series result was disappointing, there’s no question about it.

“So was the Six Nations. Coming fifth in the Six Nations was a pretty difficult situation.

“The last result in South Africa was important but not critical to any decisions we make about the future.”

Remarkable training season Andrew Forsman is diverting credit for another record-breaking season for Cambridge’s Baker Racing Stables to an unlikely source.

Forsman and training partner Murray Baker continued to rewrite the record books in 201718, setting new standards for winners in a season, stakes won in a season and stakes races won in a season.

Following on from last season’s premiership-winning tally of 107 wins, 19 at stakes level and earnings of $2.92 million, Baker and Forsman racked up 142 wins to break their own national record of 114 set in 2014-15, with 20 stakes wins and earnings of $4,478,405, eclipsing Mark Walker’s record of $3,711,249, set in 2008-09.

They are numbers that are immensely satisfying for the training partners but Forsman believes Baker’s son Bjorn deserves his share of credit for the stable’s contemporary fortunes.

Baker’s departure opened the door for Forsman to join Murray Baker in partnership for the 2012-13 season and he has been careful to foster the special team culture among staff that his predecessor had created.

“We’ve got a strong team ready for spring so we’ve got our fingers crossed we can do it all again,” Forsman said.

Mitchell strikes again For the second year in succession Michael Mitchell, the English-born jumps jockey who made his mark in New Zealand, has pulled off a surprise win in the Smithwick Memorial Steeplechase (3300m).

Mitchell guided Show Court, a son of Vinnie Roe, to victory over the previously unbeaten favourite Iranistan at Saratoga Springs yesterday. Twelve months ago Mitchell won the same race on Swansea Mile, who hadn’t been successful in his previous 11 starts. Mitchell was Jumps Jockey of the Year at the 2014-15 New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards.

Exchange down to the wire Rangiora High School went home with a narrow victory to their names after a sporting exchange with Ashburton College on Monday.

The two schools were taking part in an annual sporting exchange in Ashburton featuring eight sports and 14 different

games, and it couldn’t have been much closer, with Rangiora taking seven wins to Ashburton’s six, with the boys’ first XI hockey ending in a 2-all draw.

Ashburton’s biggest wins of the day came on the hockey turf.

The girls’ first XI picked up a commanding 5-0 win and the

boys’ first XI were equally dominant, winning 6-0.

Rangiora dominated on the basketball court, winning three of the four games.

Rangiora won the senior girls’ match 62-56, the junior boys’ match 88-56 and the junior girls’ game 63-23, but Ashburton’s sen-

ior boys picked up an upset 86-81 win.

Rangiora also picked up wins in two of the three netball games, winning the senior B game 38-20 and the year 10A game 25-22, but Ashburton’s year 9A team picked up a 30-27 win.

On the rugby field, the two

schools’ under-15 sides battled it out with Ashburton coming out on top 46-24, while Ashburton also won the squash 3-2.

In the volleyball it was the Rangiora side who won 3-1, and the visitors also picked up the smallbore rifle shooting with a 94.5 to 91.56 win.
