Ashburton’s new top cop has been found, with a local being awarded the role. Current detective sergeant Leigh Jenkins will be making the shift in to the senior sergeant’s role on April 29, taking over from the incumbent Matt Emery. The role of sub area supervisor will see him oversee all officers based in the Ashburton District.
“Leigh is an experienced detective and investigator who has managed a large number of high profile investigations within Mid Canterbury,” MidSouth Canterbury area commander police Inspector Dave Gaskin said. “The skills he has gained from his current role will be valuable for him moving forward.” Current senior sergeant Matt Emery echoed the sentiments, saying that Jenkins’ knowledge of the area would be invaluable.

“He knows the communities very well and being a local is valuable as well,” he said. Emery has had to travel in every day from out of the district, and he said while he has enjoyed his time in the role, to get the best out of the position the person needs to be based in the district as well. Before Emery, the role was held by Phil Dean, who was in the role for around nine months last year, before handing over to Emery on January 7 of this year.
